  • There are tons of ways to mark on metal.
    Most of the methods have more than one way to use them, creating unlimited ways to mark or scribe your project lines. Did you even know that the squares have that scribe in them???
    Here are some of the many ways we mark metal for our fabrication projects in our shop.
    Share with all of us your tried and true ways of marking metal. Thank you!!

    Thank you for sharing all the different ways to mark on the metal, I can see all of them being useful in different project's I'm working on to see what I'm cutting or the mark to see what I'm doing. All of the methods are for different reasons. 👍🏽

    In machinist school we would use a height gauge to do layout. The height gage has a little scribe edge that is perfect for marking through Dykem. The height gauge was on a granite layout table that is metrology lab straight.

    Get a holder for your rectangle soapstone. You will be able to use them down to about a inch long, and not break them.

    Great group of marking ideas. My Father was a tool and die maker, and he used his calipers to make lines for 40 years so don't let any one tell you the the sharp edges or tips are NOT used for that haha :) they are

    If possible, I'd like to see you do a LAY OUT for gauges on a dash. The gauges would be either 2 or 3 different sizes. You want semi try and balance. I'm curious how you would judge the distance between the gauges. Could be on a flat dash. Love your videos.

    I like the Markal Silver-Streak,comes with 6 refills and one in it. Has a sharpener in the cap if you need to make a fine line. I also like a pencil or ever sharp for fine lines depending on the work surface.

    Use my old caliper as well just like you do lol same silver pencil and got a compas that I can scribe with and holds a pencil and paint marker. I use soap stone for notes and for drawing out on the welding table. Use my grease pen for cutting especially for plasma cutting it doesn't disappear like other markers.

    Hey Arco, good session on metal marking for fan and welding, I didn't know about some your examples. I use an office supply product from Pentel called Presto Pocket Correction Pen ZL62-W, it is basically white out. I use them for cutting lines and hole marking for drilling. They run about $2 to $3 each. Be Well Darren

    I use a small tap, one that has the point on the end of it to scribe my lines through the dykem with the 45 degrees on the tip you can get really close to your metal ruler and get precise with your scribe lines, you can also use the tap as a center punch for drilling holes….

    I have theater craftsman awl, and the vintage compass. If you have a restore in your area check in there once in a while. I got the compass for 3 bucks. I also use the Milwaukee permanent marker. It is meant to be used on oily surfaces. The ultra fine permanent markers are good to. They don't last that long though

    Use your broken bits of soap stone to dust your files to stop them getting swarf stuck in the cutting teeth.

  • @JonDingle
    @JonDingle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not keen on paint pens at all. Steel scribe on layout paint is the best, sharpened soapstone is useful. With markers, you have to remember/consider which side of the line to cut too because the line is widers than a scribe mark so you loose accuracy. I like those Speedway scribes, sadly, no available here in the UK.

      There’s a small black book called a POCKET REF BOOK you need one bad. Honestly, in my opinion, everyone should own one of those books that does welding fabrication, mechanical or anything like that. It has way in measures and sizes and shapes and everything in there. They’re very cheap. I believe they’re about 13 bucks on Amazon. I will post the link below for you. Thank you so much for watching the video and the nice comments. That was a great question!

      @@jeremyhanna3852 just curious, Wrey Schelin uses the soot, then burns it off to anneal it. He said the soot burns off at annealing temp, which is around 750°. I try to keep up on stuff, so I have less screw ups..lol I know it melts at just over 1200°, I use a black sharpie, and when it burns off, it's annealed.
