  • Aortic Warriors founder Dr Peter Tsai interviews aortic rupture and aortic dissection survivor Cary Yurk who lives in Hong Kong. Here's Cary's story on how he felt pounding in chest, to being paralyzed from waist down, to almost dying from heart attack protocol at the emergency room, to 9 hours surgery with his chest open for 2 days, waking up from induced coma after 4 days, to 3 months rehab learning how to walk again. Here's a courageous story of a 62 year old survivor that hopes to bring positive light to those new survivors of aortic rupture and aortic dissection. We hope you learn something from this video and help Aortic Warriors spread the global campaign: Not Just The Heart, Check Your AORTA Too! And to the survivors: Never Stop Living! Stay Strong!

I am a long time (20 years) emergency and urgent care physician assistant in Utah and Idaho and a retired paramedic and at age 55 - THIS Christmas Eve (2023) - I survived a Class A dissection and a 10 hour surgery that day. My story is pretty unique I'd love to share with you Doc. My first ever surgery, sadly and I want it to be may last. I also have a new valve, a replaced / repaired LAD (widomaker) and the biggest trouble he told me (Dr Reid, Murray Utah IHC) was trying to build a base for the aortic valve as mine was no more and he had to get creative, AFTER he worked for hours to get the bleeding to stop. At 5 hours in he told my wife to gather the 7 kids as he thought he could not save me, but if I didn't have any premonition of dying (I did not, and in fact drove to the hospital and had NO pain or dizziness going in - I HEARD my own sudden, a very bad one, murmur as I slept and this brought me in to the ER !! ;-) he would keep trying. He did. He said at 10 hours he watched my heart get slower and slower and stop. He was walking out to tell my wife he could do nothing else when the others said I just started beating, and doctor says I rallied. I remember none of this thank goodness! No cool angel stories to tell though i am a very faithful and religious man. My story is a bit more unique, to me of course, than that I'd love to share. Thank you for the aortic warriors website!!

BTW he had 3 on-call full dissections over Christmas weekend. one was 80 - she was ready to go and went in hours. The other was 45 skiing in Utah with his family and kids for Christmas from back east - he died on the table, and ME.......here I am writing this and doing well.

I've managed to survive a aortic rupture and aortic aneurysm, just by jumping on my bed.

That is wonderful. Not many people would believe or accept your experience, Luke.
