    That hidden track is called Damone. I think the hidden track thing was kind of cool back then. It created that fun little legend of a song at the end of your CD you’ve had for a year that you had never heard before, and only discovered when you left the CD on and forgot about it, fell asleep while it was playing and was woken up by that undiscovered song, or somebody let you in on the little secret of that rumored hidden gem at the end of the CD. Obviously before streaming was around this was kind of fun, but now it’s pretty much what you said, just excessive empty space between a couple of tracks. Damone is one of my favorites on the album, and the fact that it’s a hidden track means that official versions don’t really exist on most streaming platforms, and also that it wasn’t pressed on the vinyl version, which makes me really sad lol. I would’ve been fine if they had kept mx, left in that bong rip and backwards talking just because it was so weird, random and kinda 90s, and then had Damone right after

    • @mollyesanborn
      @mollyesanborn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Yes, I completely agree. As separate tracks MX and Damone are awesome! Just the 37 minute format is a bit outdated for current streaming platforms.

      @@mollyesanborn Hidden tracks were awesome on CDs because you had to scan forward for it and when you found one it was like listening to a secret song just for you. Damone and Cant Even Breathe are both Deftones songs that sound amazing but you wont find them out in front. Damone was hidden and Cant Even Breathe was on the Lost Highway soundtrack.

    • @omardcastrod
      @omardcastrod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I loved hidden tracks. Whenever I bought a cd, I prayed and hoped for hidden tracks on them from my favorite bands.
      Streaming sucks to be quite honest. It’s convenient, but that’s about it in my opinion.
      It takes all the fun out of collecting, and even bonding with the album or musician in a way.
      With streaming, no one pays attention to album art anymore, perhaps even meanings of the albums and/or songs and takes out a lot of the passion element as a listener.
      There is/was something unique about sifting through a cd collection to choose the right one and listening to an entire album.... and letting it play out until the “hidden tracks/s” play....
      5-6 CD players were fantastic!!! At least a few hours of glorious sounds nonstop!

    This is a favorite for me because I feel the tuning suits them. Adrenaline was E standard/drop D.
    Around the Fur is drop D down half a step.
    White Pony is drop C.
    Deftones and Wrist are 7 string.
    From Diamond Eyes on it was 8 string and baritone guitars.
    I think drop D down half a step suits them.

    Just a quick note about the genre distinction: this album is definitely a "nu-metal" album. However, from White Pony and on, Deftones have dramatically evolved and incorporated other influences and genres. They haven't been a nu-metal band now for several albums (and years) and I think this is why they went on to become so much more than their peers in the nineties and early 2000s. When these guys were coming up, they shared the stage with bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Slipknot etc. Another great video!

      Its use as a pejorative aside, what are the defining aspects of nu metal? Heavy rock music with a lack of solos, focus on groove and tone, influences of hip-hop on the vocals, rhythm and structure. This is a nu metal album, and one of the best.

  • @Pink_Maggit
    @Pink_Maggit 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    Their first and second albums are considered nu metal by a lot of people, but starting with white pony they started to become too experimental to be properly labeled nu metal, which is basically metal mixed with hip hop / rap. But that's just the surface of it.

    While Deftones were still considered nu-metal on this album, you can hear them already beginning to experiment with other genres like shoegaze on songs like BQAD and the more experimental, ambient passages of certain songs (Frank, their keyboardist/turntablist, does a lot of those crazy synthy effects you're hearing - he became an official member of the band on White Pony). Adrenaline, their first album, is definitely their most overall nu-metal (Chino raps on some songs). I'd say try some of their albums after White Pony first, it's a pretty crazy evolution in sound. Those albums are Deftones (a very dark-sounding album and a personal favorite of mine after WP and ATF, seems its not for everyone though), Saturday Night Wrist (a pretty experimental album, probably their spaciest), Diamond Eyes (one of their more accessible, upbeat and optimistic albums - it was the first album they put out after their original bassist Chi was in a serious car accident that he eventually passed away from), Koi No Yokan (a very slick, progressive sounding album) and Gore (not one of their more well-regarded albums by the fans, I think it's a little underrated though). You have quite the journey ahead of you!

I see a lot of my own taste represented here -- Around the Fur is my second-favorite album of theirs and you picked up a lot of the sonic reasons for why in the tension, ambience, intensity, and mishmash of influences; I get the same inexplicable grin on my face when I hear them transition between creepy soundscapes and shrieking vocals; I'm the same with lyrics not registering until my 6-10th listen; and my initial reaction to a lot of the music I end up loving is "I'm not sure if I like this? I think I do?" And hey, The Fragile is my favorite NIN record too!
    I hope we see more of these Deftones album reactions. I'm gunning for Koi No Yokan, their 2012 album and also my favorite for its chaotic mix of aggressive energy and lush soundscapes.

    Great reaction, I love this album. This was definitely their big transition from the more raw numetal sound of their first album to their unique progressive/alternative metal sound they've really become known for. It is also their first album with a DJ band member, who adds all those cool "echoey" sounds and even keyboards. This more aggressive sound and energy does return throughout their discography, like their self titled Deftones album. Before you move on from Around the Fur, it'd be really cool to see a reaction to their rare Drive Away Far "Acoustic" version. I adore this album. Probably my favorite next to Saturday Night Wrist. It's definitively the epitome of their early work. It has a lot of the elements that define their sound, even today. I do miss some of the more atmospheric stuff from their more recent stuff when I listen to this album. It still has a really distinct atmosphere and tone that you don't really find on the rest of their albums, except for White Pony. This album is a bummer in a great way. It's kind of sickening in parts especially the last half of the album. I also listened to this album while reading Lord of the Rings for a while. I have a lot of memories doing that. Fun fact, Max Cavalera from Sepultura is on Headup. He does some vocals and guitar on it. This was the first Deftones record I ever heard back in like 2010 or 2011 and it's still my favorite. I just cannot replicate the experience with anything else.

This album has a ton of little quirks and facts about it that make it even better, love how you've been commentating these album listens, keep up the good work, I like listening to people talk about my favorite band :)

    Deftones is one of my favorite bands, nobody sounds like them. Chino Moreno can go from soft vocals to screaming in your face in an instant.

    Terry Date, their producer, was really instrumental into shaping the band in their formative years until Saturday Night Wrist. Terry has worked with the heaviest bands like Pantera, Soundgarden, Slipknot, etc. it would be very interesting if they work again.
    And although Deftones emerged during the time of Nu Metal and was labeled as such (probably from Chino’s rapping), they have always been an outlier in a great weird way.
    PS, I never heard anyone song describe Be Quiet and Drive “pretty”. But in some ways, I agree 😂

    Fun to experience these through new ears. Excited for you to keep following their evolution through the albums. Also give a listen to Team Sleep-it's a single album Chino side project that takes some of the softer sounds (like Digital Bath or Be Quiet and Drive) and mixes that with more of a trip-hop vibe. But the drumming is all real and the dude is crazy.

    Around the Fur is by far my favorite Deftones record. It has all their dynamics and they were all young and filled with energy. That being said, listening to it after their most recent stuff, you can get a little ah... overwhelmed, lol. Btw, the song 'Be quiet and drive (Far away)', literally changed my life. Cheers.
    PS: 16:55 its one of the hidden tracks, called 'Bong hit'. They are...you know, taking a hit, lol. 17:08 is the other hidden track, called 'Damone'.

      Nice, hopefully I get you hooked on Deftones now haha! I think they're one of those bands that when their music finally clicks there's no going back, it's got a very addictive quality to it. I think White Pony makes for a really cool starting point, or you could try Ohms too (that was the first album from them I heard). Wherever you start with their albums though, enjoy the journey! ✌️

    Another great review Molly! I really like how much you get into the Deftones when they bring the energy. This is definitely their most agressive album. 🤘

    The second voice in Headup is Max Cavalera, originally the singer of Sepultura - a more "traditional" metal band, which reflects on his vocals.
    They wrote the track together after the death of Max's stepson, Dana, who was a close friend of Chino (he was even a pallbearer at the funeral).

    Be Quiet is one of those tracks that grow on you the more you listen to it, probably my favorite from this album.
    Hidden tracks worked better on CD. A lot of bands did them in the 90s. Not so much for digital, like you can't throw MX into a playlist.

    I love almost everything from there first to their seventh album. My favorites change depending on what kind of musical mood I’m in, but I always find myself coming back to around the fur. The only other album that comes close to its level of heaviness and aggression is there self titled, which is a little bit like this album in that kind of angry sound, but also has another layer of Moodiness and frustration that this record doesn’t really have. Definitely one of if not their darkest in their discography, right next to Saturday night wrist, another one I love. Their self titled is usually one that Deftones fans either love or hate, many of them warming up to it after a few listens like I did. Now it’s near the top of my list of Deftones albums. It’s the one I personally suggest you check out next, either that or diamond eyes
