$500 Truck Camper Rotten Wood Repair/Rebuild

- Join me as we replace the 50 plus year old rotten wood structure on this camper one board at a time. Making this up as I go, as there is no one way to do this project.

My dad built one from scratch in the early 70s. I just had a Real lite given to me. I'll probably just use the old frame as a pattern. Just skin it with the old stuff.
Sounds like a great project. Hopefully it comes together smoothly and you can get out there and enjoy it soon.

Thanks!!!!! Just put the 1/4” wood on the roof. Like finished 2 min ago. I’m exhausted. Hopefully I can get the side material and get it weathered in soon.
Wow!!! Really doing a nice restore job on this old camper. When do you have time to sleep? LOL!! I need some of your motivation. Keep it up. Excited to see what you do to it next.
Boxes and boxes of Amazon and other vendor parts are showing up. I’m looking forward to wiring it and sharing that party. It is fun to see signs of life like lights and fans, water, and heat.
You are doing great on the camper. I have a choice between 2 truck campers to restore. One is a 1988 Coachmen with wood framing and Laminated fiberglass siding. The kind found on motorhomes in the 80's. Currogated fiberglass glued to the camper (can I remove it for structural repairs without destroying it?). The other camper is a 1969 Coachmen constructed like yours or any other traditional camper. But it needs appliances put back into it , and some structural work. What is your opinion?
Thank you. I really respect your opinion as you seem to know your way around a camper. You have some fun projects. I would think the fiberglass one would be better taken apart from the inside out so you would shore it up on the outside and then carve your way through the inside walls. Unless it is delaminating. The. You can just peel it off. It will be messy but can be done in sections.

Factory built campers are mostly garbage, cheap & woefully terrible 'workmanship'. Way its made is scarey. Few were well made. DIY is best. Having said that, im remodeling an old camper also to my specifications. Then I'll build my own. Nice to have for emergency or trips.

i hated the cramped, superfluous interior, so i gutted it. Dont need cabinets everywhere stuffed with leaky plumbing, water heater & wires, a inefficient heater & refrigerator. Dumb tiny sink. Get rid of all that junk & it is 'roomy'. Might put a small wood burner where the fridge was & utilize the big vent hole rather than make another. Mine has same crash in upper rt corner have to address. Was so cluttered, making like a sheep-wagon interior, so much better@ @McSpeedAlaskanAdventures
@@kabuti2839 awesome. That’s the way to do it. In retrospect I should have done some major interior changes myself. But it is functional and solid and it looks good on the truck.
