Why did you use different staplers and the first one you used where it was fixed? If the ceiling is very thin, they did not manage to pass to the other side.desde Chile 🇨🇱 😊
I used the wide crown staples to tie the cross stringers to the stringers that ran down the length of the roof. I was a little concerned that it would go through, but I tested it first and it did not. I used 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) staples and turned the air down a little on the compressor. I used the smaller crown staples to secure the panels to the stringer. For those I used 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) crown staples. The stringers were 1 inch x 3 inch (2.5 cm x 7.6 cm) Hope that makes sense.
Hello. I just bought a 97 palomino mustang(or at least im 99% sure thats what it is) and i ave to redo the roof. Your video is suuuper useful. Did you say .197 inch plywood? Im not sure of im just not looking in the right place but i dont see a fraction that equals that😅
Yes. I bought it at Lowes. It is called Revolution Ply. It is .197 or 5mm plywood sheathing. It used to be around $16 a sheet but I think now it is more like $26

Thank you, Is your roof metal like this one? If so you could get a thin piece of metal and rivet it over the hole then cover it with the hengs waterproof coating. You could also see if you could find an rv skylight cover depending on the size of the hole and place that over the opening, then you would have a view to the stars :)

Did you glue the insulation right to the canvas top?
Yes, I used the fuze-it extreme temperature construction adhesive to glue it to the top. This top was an aluminum skin. I then glued and stapled the wood panels to that.

Q? Whats holding up the cross beams STOPPING the roof from dipping in the center ? And collapsing the cross beam at not attached to the frame? It will sink like ours down the middle if there is weight ?
The metal cross beams are attached to the roof with screws through the wood stringers. The metal cross beams have a slight curve to them which I believe it is suppose to help curve the roof so it does not sink down.
How thick is the top of the roof? What size screws would you use so they dont just penetrate tbrough the other side
This roof was a thin aluminum not sure of the thickness but it was pretty thin. For the crown staples that I used to attach the center wood stingers to the side stringers they were half inch (the stringers were 3/4 inch wide) To attach the ceiling panels to the stringers I used 1/2 inch narrow crown staples (as well as liquid nails during both processes) To attach the metal support brackets to the ceiling panels I used 3/4" screws.
How long did this take and what was the overall cost? I’m sure you’d do it MUCH faster than me but I’m still curious.
The interior of the roof took me about two eight hour days to finish. The longest part seemed to be cleaning the old insulation out. The outside of the roof took a full day because I had to let the first coat of rubber roof paint dry for four hours before I put on the second coat. The cost of the roof repair was around $650 and that was for the plywood, paint, rubber roof coating, insulation, screws, crown nails. I will be posting a before and after of the pop up and the total cost with the roof and the rest of the interior was just under $1100.
I am currently in the process of repairing the roof on my pop-up, and this video helped me figure out how to get it done.. Thank you.
However, what is the thickness of the foam board?
Glad it helped, I used the 3/4 inch 4x8 sheets of expanded Polystyrene board insulation. I got it at Lowes.

What about the holes in the roof? Isn’t that what caused all the damage? How did you fix that?
Thank you for the comment. I posted a part 2 of the roof repair and in that I showed how I repaired the holes. I used bondo to fill in the holes and then I painted the roof with Heng's rubber roof coating.
There are only 2 types of RVs. The ones that breakdown and the ones that take on water (leaks). 😅 If you're not handy, stick to cottage Air bnb's😂
What did the wife crown staples fasten to? Is that foam or sheet metal ?
There was the original wood stringers that ran down the sides that I did not remove. That is what I stapled the new cross stringers to. The ones that ran down the side were not rotted, that is why I didn't replace those.
When you are nailing the stringers in, any concern that you'll puncture rhe roof? What are you nailing into?
I was a little concerned that it would puncture the roof. The stringers I used were 1x3 and the shortest wide crown staples I could find were 3/4 inch. I turned the air down on my compressor and tested it first to make sure it did not penetrate the fiberglass because the 1x3's are not a true 1" wide. (I did not show that in the video, and it did not penetrate). If it had I would have probably use the metal straps and screws that were 1/2 or 5/8's. The original roof was tied together with glue and crown staples so that is what I used. The crown staples nail to the two stringers that ran lengthwise on both sides. Those fortunately were still solid and I did not have to replace them. I should have shown a close up of that. Hope that makes sense. If not let me know and I will look through my videos and see if I have a close up of it.

@@chandersman I say it is worth it to fix it up. Check back in a few days, I am going to have the second part of the roof video posted (exterior side) and then the before and after video of the palomino pop up restoration. It came out great! (at least I think it did, lol) If along the way you have questions, please feel free to ask. I will let you know that we did put about $1500 into it with all the restoration, paint and interior touch ups, but if you got it for free I know you could sell it for much more and recoup the money if you ever needed too.

Excellent video. I’m planning on doing this tomorrow, but I don’t have nobody to help me remove the roof. Is it doable alone, or it’s crazy heavy?
It is heavy, but I was able to get the roof off myself. I just slowly went from side to side and shimmied it to where I could lower it to the ground, if that makes sense.

Those were the original ones, I just painted them.

Not being a wise guy, but how about the wiring? There are no ceiling lights, or a 110 line for the AC? Great work otherwise! I’m going to follow your lead on my Coleman.
Sorry about not showing that. I used the original wiring which was not put inside the ceiling. The wire for the AC was a wire with a plug that I ran along the ceiling then down the side and plugs into a wall outlet. I hid with a cable cover raceway, I used the same cable cover raceway to hide the wires for lights as well. So the wire were not put in the roof if that makes sense.

Eventually I would love too! My work has had me traveling so much I haven't had much time to work on even the new camper I got for myself. I haven't posted a new video in a while because of this, but hopefully I will soon.
Could you not cut that layer out
Not exactly sure which layer you are talking about, but if it was the foam layer, I couldn't cut that because I didn't want to risk cutting the thin metal roof.
