      @@samh6509 Uh, being confident and having “self love” isn’t supposed to separate one from reality. These evaluations are based entirely on physical appearance, and very few people will fall into to top of the range - it’s just the way things are. Those who classify themselves as a “ten” (or even close) without a second thought are completely lost in narcissistic fantasy. You also missed the point of the OP.

    • @rindomness
      @rindomness 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yep just because someone says theyre a ten doesnt mean they have a superiority complex or something :/ Thats not even real confidence

    • @toastjam4510
      @toastjam4510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @anhedonianepiphany5588 But the question wasn’t about what others would rate them it was about what they rated themselves.if you veiw yourself as a 1 that would be sad and insecure but if you rate yourself a ten that isn’t good and confident? (the opposite of a one).
      If the initial questions was what others would rate you i could understand your point but what you rate yourself is different;you shouldn’t be shamed for you are amazing cause thats what you should think of yourself the alternative is to think that you are horrible and that is a far from ideal self image.

      Being confident means thinking of yourself as a 10, being arrogant is believing others think you are above 5.

    As a girl, I think I'm honestly a 3-4, maybe a 5 on a good day. My family says I'm beautiful, but the real world has told me I'm pretty unattractive. Guys would literally dare each other to ask me out as a joke. Sooo, yeah, I'd say I'm slightly below average. I'm glad other girls can look at themselves and think of themselves as pretty, but there's a way to do that without sounding arrogant.

    Late to the party.
    As a woman, I've noticed in my interactions with other women, especially in recent years, most of them will encourage you - almost to the point of pressuring - to be confident in yourself (i.e. think you're perfect). That is to say, if you say a number under 10, you'll a lot of "NOOOO. YOU'RE A TEN. YOU SHOULD THINK YOU'RE A TEN." If you ask me, I would objectively give myself a solid 5, maybe 6-7 on a good day. And I don't have a problem with that, because I'm plenty good enough for me.

    Interesting human psychology on the 1-10 or 0-100 scales:
    I retired from the Marine Corps. At one point they had updated how we did our performance reports. Each person evaluated got placed on a scale from 0-100 for the value of their report. That percentage was based on how the evaluator had rated everyone else of that same rank. So if you were his highest, you got a 100, if you were the lowest, you got a 0, and the people who were average would be clustered around 50.
    The system sounds great, and naturally the majority of people will end up around 50 just based on the nature of the system. Since we know that most people are indeed average, logically it makes perfect sense.
    The problem was that they found when they started doing promotion boards, the board members were extremely hesitant to select anyone for promotion if their percentage number was less than 80. Of course this meant that there were very, very few people the boards would select just based on the nature of people having weirdness around the numbers.
    To solve this problem, they literally just changed the numbers.
    They changed the system so the very bottom person on a guy's profile was shown as 80, and the average became 90. It immediately solved the problem.
    So you're absolutely right that there is something in our heads that makes us feel like the 5 or the 50% is horrible for some reason.

    I wonder if the reason a lot of people see a 7 as average and not 5 is because of our experiences with schooling and grades? 5 - 50% you fail. 7- 70% you pass but you aren’t scoring high (aka- average) Not sure how grading works in other countries so just my idea as an American! You can love yourself while acknowledging that you are not perfect looking. For example, I love myself and am confident about my body, but I would never call myself a ten (a seven at most).
    Besides, rating your own and other people's looks is pointless, since it is really subjective. An example of that is for instance, in my opinion, Timothée Chalamet is 10/10, but one of my friends thinks he looks weird and doesn't find him attractive at all.

    It sends the message that your value is in your looks, and that it's an objective, measurable property.
    What really matters is attraction, which isn't always rooted in looks. If you struggle finding a person or group that likes you (true for friends and romantic interests alike), work on yourself to have more properties that are commonly found attractive, like skills, style, fitness, etc...

    It is true that more men approach women I think. Im a woman irl and I honestly always got men talking to me, but I never got the courage to ask those out I found interesting. Some of those who approached me I actually regretted rejecting and some I gave my number to because I just have problems saying no. I always had unstable mental health so relationships just weren't really in the picture. Like I dont go on dates and ive never been in a relationship. Idk, I have respect for those who do have the balls to ask strangers for their number and id love to be able to do that too. I get so angry at myself when I dont approach people that catch my interest because I keep thinking about that it wouldn't work out anyways or that they'd laugh at me. Getting weird looks or people making fun of me is just my worst nightmare for these moments and then I cant get it out of my head.
    I gotta add some of the guys who want your number are weird tho, like dangerous weird, ive had some bad experiences there with harassment and I think thats also a reason why women are so picky with men on this. Like you gotta be careful.

    People I know rate themselves a little too high as well. I personally know I'm a 5 on a good day. 4 usually, because I'm about average and nothing really sticks out about me and I'm fine with that. These girls specifically all look pretty similar, not just face-wise but their style too, and nothing is wrong with that, it just goes to show that the same type of people feel this way about themselves. I know I could probably fix a lot about myself, like wearing makeup or changing the way I dress, but I still wouldn't believe I'm a ten. Literally no one is a true ten, because everyone has something they could improve upon. I get giving yourself a higher score to feign confidence (or because you really are confident) but it's just overconfidence at that point.

    I think the reason why girls are expected to be super confident in their looks is because we have high beauty rituals, how we do our eyebrows, hair, clothes, even wether or not we have leg hair is a statement. If a woman is seen as ugly, we get blamed for it. When a man is seen as ugly Peale blame genetics or something out of their control. The pressure for women to be seen a certain way changes the way we interact with self confidence.

    I'm a girl, I've been asked out a lot over the years (for some reason it started in elementary school, and has continued to this day). Based on other people's opinions, I suppose I am above average, but considering how I force lowered self-confidence for myself, I'd probably end up saying I'm a 2 and not agreeing that other people would say that. I would default to saying most people are a 6 because I usually judge people based on interaction. I like tons of different personality types, but there's only one fairly specific basis I am attracted to, and even then I would enjoy just being a person's friend if that's what they would want from me. I'm not trying to be modest or anything, I just have a hard time saying I like or dislike a person based on appearance alone, and most people look about the same to me (on a scale, that is). I guess since I mainly grew up in neighborhoods with little to no issues and had a good mix of different races, ages, and personalities, I have a similar standard across the board.

    I think confidence is feeling at ease with who you are. Like if you're a 4 on the looks scale, see what else how you can develop, say may a hobby (that you're genuinely interested in) that makes you more interesting to people. You might still be a 4 but you'll be an interesting 4.
    Contrary to the prevailing sentiment in this comment section, I think there is some degree of objectivity to physical attractiveness. I agree it's not an exact science but there are certain physical attributes that are considered appealing by the majority of women and men as there are physical attributes that are unappealing.
    If beauty really was that subjective, pretty privilege wouldn't exist. There is a reason why most celebrities are at least above average looking and the most popular ones are on average very physically attractive.

People can be confident and put themselves at like a 7 or 8 without sounding arrogant, but when you are putting yourself in the top 1% of looks, of course it is going to sound like that. It is the same with confidence in literally any other situation. self love is when you accept what you are and because you love yourself you keep improving. rating yourself a 10 is just lying to yourself its like pretending to be god even tho you are not. here is an example. if a person is insecure but they love them selves, they will try to solve and sort out their insecurities and whatever that's holding them back. meanwhile an arrogant or a delusional person will keep lying to themselves thinking and believing that they are a 10 and selfishly expecting others to treat them like a 10. all i am saying is just lying to yourself is not self love but actually loving yourself and trying to always move forward is self love,
