    Wow my machine is almost as clean as yours! Can I make one suggestion? When you mill from both sides with a feed mill. Don’t try to go all the way thru. Go down enough to leave a thin web. If you go thru the material gets thin and bends away from the tool and will twist up and go thru the flutes breaking/chipping them. Because of the big tip radius/lead angle. It’s better to leave say about .06” of material (with your tool size) than cut thru in one cut with a standard endmill. Don’t ask how I know this. Been there done that.

      @@arduinoversusevil2025 I still do mess a little with fusion. But for the Mazak Integrex Esprit is better. Esprits support is better. Fusion makes you go to a second party for post processor support. Or even to make a special one for the Mazak. Witch is necessary. They don’t have one in their library. Also as of now I don’t like the simulation in Fusion compared to Esprit TNG. Night and day difference. But for the cost Fusion is a very good value and the cad side does work good. Thanks!

      Junior machinist here. Not quite catching what you're saying. Are you talking about when you're cutting a piece in half or something? Can i get you to explain more in depth?

    • @EdgePrecision
      @EdgePrecision 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @UCayFr7DN5Wca37psdbchwRg In working with high feed mills the depth of cut is very small. This is to take advantage of the chip thinning principal of a cutting tool. So they have a big radius on the face of the tool. But because of that shallow depth of cut. If you are breaking thru to the other side of the material let’s say in a outside profile, slot or hole. The last passes the material left at the bottom is so thin before the tool actually breaks thru. Generally what happens is the thin web of material left will then to bend away from the end face of the tool and not be cut. Because it isn’t stiff enough. It also will overheat from the cutting edges rubbing instead of cutting as it bends away from the face end of the tool. This is because of the shallow axial depth of cut. What is better is to cut only to a depth that the material won’t bend away from the tool. This sort of depends on the diameter of the tool. When I’m using a 3.00” diameter high feed mill I leave at least .125”. Than come in with a standard tool and take the last .125” all in one cut. If in my example it is a 3.00” dia feed mill I use a regular face mill that cuts a 90 deg corner. But what I do is go .100 past the final depth so I’m cutting just with the sides of the inserts. Cutting off the scrap in one cut. That may be hard to visualize from a written description. Maybe I will make a video demonstrating what I’m describing.

      @@awesomezing4455 thin web means the piece will flex up or down, pinching on the tool. I had an assistant ripping some timber on a saw and they would "help" pull the pieces as I pushed and when they squeezed the pieces together into the kerf, that would bind on the blade and the whole show leap alarmingly into the air.

      Once you get the hang of it lol. Fusion has been amazing at speeding up the process over other cam programs. With a robust knowledge of your post and machine you can tear through programs and parts. While im not professionally running machines anymore i still do a bunch of programming and machining for a frc team, i can get through programming a couple discrete parts per hour. The biggest time hog is getting the workholding right. Literally after that, so long as i checked the program it if it makes the first pass or movement ok on the machine, i turn the feeds up and walk away.

      @@jtb6075 those old (80s) cheap fadals are pretty easy to get running quick. The use a damn near standard fanuc code. Anything older isnt worth it imo unless its a huge machine thats worth a retrofit. Once you understand how to edit a post and how the cam dumps to the post you can run like fire. The caveat is that you understand the limitations of the entire system, if you can program within them its literally pushing a button. I have high schoolers running my programs after only a few hours on the control. The more reliable a program, the less skill required on the machine operator. Basically clamp the part, load the program, touch the tool off according to the setup sheet, ensure the workholding is correct to the setup, sheet, indicate the work offset, turn rapids and feeds down to 10%, press the green button, make sure it does the first cut correct, and then turn the feeds up.

    Also, the SFM determines your spindle speed, not your feed rate, so backing that off is only going to create a larger chip load and a heavier load on the tool.

They still wear quickly enough that id rather be changing inserts than sending it out for sharpening.

  • @TheFeller1554
    @TheFeller1554 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What you need is a Marvel band saw with a hot rod blade to cut out the chunks you want to use, and not have to do all that mill work to get down to the start point. That rail material is some nasty tough stuff, especially the used stuff on the top surface. High feed mill is an excellent choice for this endeavor. I don't see why these high feed end mills are so damn expensive. Looks like once they get the geometry figured out, it's just the cost of the carbide blank + grinder time + markup. I know it's like a proprietary thing the company comes up with, and you are buying the idea and development as much as you are the physical tool. Looks like anyone with a 3D laser scanner, and a 7 axis grinder, could pretty much reverse engineer any cutting tool on the market. These will be on Banggood or Aliexpress before long. Those Chinese don't miss a beat.

    Rotation issue is a first pair / second pair selection issue. A 5 axis trunnion like yours can get to a position in two possible ways, either rotate A first than B (first pair) or rotate B first then A (second pair). I Don’t have F360 in front of me but in the 5 axis rotations menu there should be an option somewhere for selecting first pair or second pair rotations.

    Also short story / PSA
    this video reminds me of that time I was younger and dumber trying too modify a hatchet into a viking axe. I'll try to save some of the details (but Im a carpenter and no machinest) my shop was basically a 6X10 closet)
    But I thought I needed more speed trying to grind in the beard portion of the axe. So I swapped out the drill press mounted drum sander, and after lookingg through the tool chest I spotted my compact router and a light bulb when off. " yeah that will accept a 1/4 " shaft" I thought as I chucked it up. "Genius" I said to myself as I tighted up the collet.
    Now the router was just a dewalt compact variable speed router. Small body lots of rpm ( up to 30k rpm). I could control the feed and pressure I told myself.
    Turned it on and nearly died. Literally. Rpm were cranked right up after a quick test and almost immediately the shaft of the drum sander bent to about 75° and I had a flywheel of death in my hands. I had 2 hands around the body of the router barely being able to hang on as the vibrations from the drumsander acting acting as a fly wheel instanstantly blistered and tore and burned up my hands and stomach because I was jammimg it up to my body to try and stabaise it. I knew I couldnt let go, and let this thing bounce around the closest which would at the very least maim me if not worse but I was also losing my grip and my hands were burning really intensly after about 10 secs of trying to hold onto this thing which I can only describe as trying to hold onto the drive shaft of your car while its doing 100 km/h. My thumbs couldnt reach the off switch amd i had this plugged into a 12ft ext cord but i was finally able to get all the slack out of the cord wiht my feet by wrapping the cord around my lag and yank it from the outlet.
    I've been and working around trades since about 9 years old, Ive helped build scaffolds 400' feet in the air, built bridges,operated countless tools and been on numerous outdoor adventures. Too this day I've never been as close to meeting our maker as that day or been more scared.
    Aside from all the other value you provide, I just wanted to thank you for the insight and sharing your expierience with us AvE.. Especially the mistakes !

    I use a 17mm Kyocera MFH Raptor indexable mill for high feed. 1.5mm fz at 220m/min only cuts about .75mm deep per pass. Works out way cheaper than solid carbs.

    You can get inserted high feed mills on Aliexpress cheap. A 18mm cutter body and 20 inserts with 4 edges each for $80. I just tried mine out last night. The thing cuts like a hot damn. Only thing crapy I saw were the insert screws I swaped them out for some Sandvik ones. Only thing is I have a Proto Trak and the max feed rate is only 100 imp.
