  • In this video, I'm smoke testing the exhaust of a 2006 Toyota Corolla, with the Autool SDT-206 Smoke Machine, for a leak near/behind the engine. A small leak can be heard in the area, and exhaust can be smelled inside the car with the fan on low.
    Fuel trims have been showing long term on the lean side (adding approx 12%-15%), but not enough to trigger the "check engine" light. I suspect that there is a leak near or above the A/F ratio sensor, as any oxygen at the sensor will cause the engine to "THINK" it's running lean.... I'm using the Autool SDT-206 Self Contained Smoke Machine to find the leak. No Shop Air Required!

    I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actron(s) DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

      Ultraviolet light would only be beneficial if I was also using the UV dye as well. (and indoors)

    Did your LTFT vary much or was it constant in 12%-15% range? On my 1999 Corolla, the LTFT sometimes show 7% during a drive cycle, then 10%-12% during another drive cycle, then up to 17% to 19% during the worst case. Car runs fine, mostly. Just curious if you had similar variability in your case. I have the Autool smoke tester also (not sure on model), so will be doing the exhaust leak test. Thanks for the video.

      LTFT of 17% at idle and moderate load, was what got me searching. I did get a P0171 on occasion, also.
      I would suspect you might see a bit of smoke near the manifold/downpipe junction. Mine was where the pipes joined each other and spread around the pipe.

    I'm curious why the oil needs to be drained after each use. Does it leak out if its not drained? Do you reuse the oil next time or just dump it?

    • @HouseCallAutoRepair
      @HouseCallAutoRepair  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It should be drained before putting it away, to keep the inside clean and to prevent accidental spillage during transportation or storage. I do re-use the oil until it's no longer clear. VERY handy machine to have!

      @@HouseCallAutoRepair Thanks for your quick response. I bought a used one yesterday and it seems to work fine. The only problem was the box that it came in had oil stains all over it. I had assumed that someone had spilled some motor oil on the box but after reading your reply, I'm thinking it had been put away while still filled with oil and stored on its side.

    Smell exhaust in the air vents cabin while the car in park Corolla 02 . Could it be the manifold gasket or the donut gasket also car is hesitating when accelerating . I think it's an exhaust issue and it gives a P0171 code with check engine light. Changed spark plugs and coils. Thank you very much.

    • @HouseCallAutoRepair
      @HouseCallAutoRepair  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely sounds like an exhaust leak near or BEFORE the first O2 sensor....

    I bought the autool sdt 101 for an engine too lean code leak we cant seem to locate. Is sdt 101 good enough to diagnose the leak/issue?

    • @HouseCallAutoRepair
      @HouseCallAutoRepair  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lean code leak? What were your short term and long term fuel trims? (at idle and 2000 rpm)
      Lean code DO NOT automatically mean a leak....
      As long as it is used in the right places, it should find almost any leak big enough to cause codes!

    • @xvdmrecords
      @xvdmrecords 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@HouseCallAutoRepair its a p0171 code on a 2005 corolla le. It reads Engine too lean, Bank 1. So i replaced the gas tank cap, spark plugs, air filter, pcv valve, hoses, MAF sensor, Purge valve solenoid, air intake gasket, throttle body gasket, motor oil & filter then finally 02 sensor bank 1. All Oem parts. Cleared the code, within an hour code comes back on everytime. Only thing i can think of is that there is a leak somewhere but can't locate it. So I ended up buying this Autool sdt 101 model. Never used one before but I wanted to know if this model is good enough to find that leak?

      @@xvdmrecords the same things here 02 Corolla. Like you changed a bunch parts tune up . I have the injectors not in yet. I have to fix an exhaust leak. Does your hesitate on the gas acceleration? I Also have P0171 , lean fuel condition. Let me know about it ? Thank you very much.

    • @xvdmrecords
      @xvdmrecords 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@marthab4172 with the smoke tester, it seemed like the smoke was coming from the top of the gas filler neck by the gas cap(brand new oem gas cap). So it wasn't the gas cap. We replaced the neck filler but still smoke kept leaking out from there. Only thing the mechanic can think of is the charcoal canister valve leak somehow causing the smoke to leak out from the neck. I didn't do that yet. Once I do, i ll post the result here.

    You don't have to buy a new piece take it to a welder he will grind a slot on the crack and welded problem will be fixed

    • @HouseCallAutoRepair
      @HouseCallAutoRepair  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thought... Unless the welder does it for free, how much does he charge per hour? How reliable is the repair? When all is said an done, was it worth the savings? if yes< then ABSOLUTELY! Being that my only out of pocket expense was the pipe itself, it didn't make any sense to seek a cheaper route.
