16:55 Actually it’s even deeper than that. Han Mi-nyeo’s name translates to “beautiful woman” and what the guys were saying was the name is wasted on her.
I'm pretty sure when Sang-woo and Ali were talking and the subtitles said, "Just call me Sang-woo", what he actually said was "Just call me hyung" which is almost like "big brother" for Korean males. Like a younger guy might call an older guy "hyung" if they're close. Which is why Ali seemed super touched by that gesture. It's sorta like in japanese when someone tells you that you can address them without an honorific. I mean I could be TOTALLY wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what he said.

You are right. In German translation, he said "Nenne mich großer Bruder". This like "Call me big brother"
Yeah, although I don't blame the English translators for changing it to just being "on a first name basis" because honestly there is no equivalent term in English that is used like that. For someone in English to ask someone else to call them big brother would seem bizarre and kind of demeaning. Even if they tried to replace it with "bro" that would have just sounded goofy. In the US we almost never even refer to our friends by calling them "friend" because we think it sounds silly, even though that's really common in most languages. I guess we just have less formal terms of endearment in our culture.
The actors said this was the hardest episode to make because they had to really pull on that rope all day.

For example, the actor who played Deok-su (snake tattoo) said he threw up multiple times shooting that scene. He had to put on extreme amounts of weight in a short amount of time for the role, so he was already physically ill from the sudden rough change, and then he had to spend hours under hot light straining against pulling a machine. Just because he got paid for it doesn't mean it wasn't hard

pretty drastic change of character from the guy in episode 1 who was stealing from his mother who was already struggling to get by.
@@Jack_80 Not entirely... Even in episode 1, we could see he cares about others. As soon as he got some money, he gave a generous tip to the cashier; after being slapped for hours just to make a few bucks, he bought fish for his mother and even gave some to a street cat. Those scenes were there to show that despite being irresponsible with money, he's always been warm-hearted.
You can think of Ki-hoon as a nice but immature child.

When I watched this for the first time, I was so shook by the cliffhanger and didn't expect it at all, I started laughing hysterically and tearing up at the same time. Never had such a mix of emotions. Squid game is just something else

English CC is based on dubs so, there are quite mistranslations.

i'm not from korea/or of korean decent but i've been studying it for years and some of the translations made me laugh so hard
i can only imagine what people think especially with the 'oppa' translation into 'babe' [with 212 and 101's scenes]
she says 'oppa' and he naturally asks her age (because he doubts he's older) and i bet people are wondering why he's asking her age all of a sudden because again, it's translated to 'babe'
that's pretty basic korean though but some things i feel like that have a hard time being translated should have just actually used 'oppa' instead of a substitute
i'm pretty sure japenese subs almost always don't translate 'senpai' because it's not so easily translated (aka we don't have honorifics in english) so the same should have been applied here but that's my take
and for people who don't know what 'oppa' means it's to adress a male older than you kind of used as 'big bro' though lovers will use it as well and this is why it should just be how it is because people would also get confused if she said 'big bro' and she's dtf LOL

Its interesting to see how creative Korean childrens games are. Our games were less complex but we werent any less enthusiastic about them. We just punch each other at the same spot until somebody could not take the pain anymore or threw each other of a big wooden beam. Apart from football with relaxed rules and different variants of ping pong.
Tug of war we only played in PE because of the lack of ropes but our teachers still made us do it over a river, which was kinda cool.

Ikr. I think good editing in line with this style probably enhances the effect though since there are sequences where it's all about that same subject still, but slow moments are cut out and the fragment still ends up with a a fiery rage of comments that flow like water.

tl;dr : He used the players mental and physical capacities against themselves.
If you are curious and want to know how:
-They made them hungry. One egg and one soda, that's very little nutrition, for those who got an egg and a soda that is, you have little to no energy to fight or defend yourself.
-The players were so sleepy. During the night, after a game, after the meal, the game made you tired, eating makes you sleepy, and at night, you already are sleepy, you will want to sleep, only those who planned to stay awake can stay awake, but they need to not fall asleep in the first place.
-In the dark, you'll barely see an attack coming. You will not see what is around you, you may bonk on something like a bed and kill yourself that way. You may bonk on someone that will defend himself for any reason, if you do see someone, you may think he will attack you, so you will attack him first, even if he was innocently trying to hide. Who's friend, who's foe?
-After the light went out for a moment, and everyone was getting used to darkness, a light started to flash repeatidly. It's to prevent the eyes from getting used to the dark. I got goosebumps when I saw the tug-of-war strategy.😱 When I was in the military, it was 100% the same in sports events.
Usually, about 15 to 20 people participated in the tug-of-war, with 3-4 leadership seniors standing in the line at the forefront & 3-4 strong ones at the rear.
After zigzag arrangement, we put the rope under our armpit, looked up at the sky for around 10 seconds, and said, "Go! Go! Go!" It's exactly the same.
The only problem with this strategy is when the other side comes up with the same strategy and the merit disappears.😂
In the end, it goes to a power fight and the strong side wins unconditionally.
Or if the opponent sees through the strategy & gives an powerful impact as soon as it starts, we can't see the situation over there because we look up at the sky, so we slip & lose in vain.😭
