The Bowie knife has got to be one of the coolest knives ever made. Interestingly, I knew James spoke Spanish, obviously having lived in Texas and marrying into a well-to-do Mexican family, the girl's father i believe was the Mayor of San Antonio if I remember my history correctly; but I never knew he spoke both French and some form of the Cherokee language. I gotta give the man credit, he may have not had say much formal education, like his contemporary David Crockett, which common to many who lived on the frontier at the time, but he was obviously a very intelligent man. Gotta give David Crockett credit, too. Like Bowie, not much formal education, yet he survived two years on his own after running away from home at the age of 14, established himself as a Hunter and was known toshare his catch with other local farmers who were struggling to feed their families, went on to survive the Creek war of 1812, afterward survived a damn-near deadly case of malaria while on a hunting trip in Arkansas, was plauged by debt just like his father his entire life, and yet inspite of all that, he made it all the way to Congres, and served I think it was 3 terms. No small feat! These men may have not been terribly educated in a formal sense, nor come from families of any distinction - just common people from humble means - and yet they both accomplished a lot during their lives. One thing that I personally have sympathy for both Crockett and Bowie, was that both became widowers, and sadly Bowie lost two children in the process. That's not something I'd wish on anyone.

On my old deer lease, there are old silver mines about a half mile west of Concan TX attributed to Jim Bowie lore. These mines are still open pits covered with wood and sheet metal, they are located up in the pass, on the Briscoe Ranch, right inside the gate. I never went down in them, but we used to see ropes going down in one day, then the next it was gone. Mexicans and Indians and Texas Rangers have used these mines for shelter, Now it’s on maps for illegals to use for much the same reason. But these mines had been originally dug in the 1600’s, but in the early 1830’s Jim Bowie was guarding these mines, when they had to suddenly fight off the Comanches in a fight which lasted a few days.
I think collectively in Texas kind of subconsciously we all realized hindsight both sides are wrong but we can't really give Indians back their land like that so .....
