They are roughly 80 miles too far west. The supposed mine is not far from Packsaddle Mountain, on Honey Creek near Marble Falls, Tx.
The San Saba presidio and mission were built because of Miranda lying to the king of Spain about the amount of silver found. He wanted nothing more than to be in charge of his own Presidio. By convincing the king that there were huge silver deposits, and the urgent need for a Presidio to protect it, he got his wish.
There are minor silver deposits and even traces of gold in the area, but nothing worth a large scale mining operation.

The boys are wrong about the small amount of silver found in their sample being meaningless. Silver does not normally occur in limestone. The area was mineralized. And in these cases, not all spots would have high silver values. There could have been more intense mineralization elsewhere in the area. They need to get a geologist out there to examine the caves to look for areas that might have contained higher grades, but were previously mined.
Also, somebody, not that long ago, dug the access shaft and put up those nice metal ladders and concrete shaft collars. I think not all that is known about the site was presented.

How about a Confederate-ers bat guano (saltpetre) mining operation? Texas saltpetre was extracted and used in the CSA Transmississippi campaign. That would explain a mine within a limestone cave.
