He was a capable man in every area. Had he devoted himself to the administration of his realm, he could have done quite a lot of good. One of Richard's best qualities is appointing men of merit and capability to positions of power and administration. He was also more freehanded than his father who was a control freak.

    (Short story time here)
When I was in kindergarten I went to a costume ball dressed as Richard the Lionheart. Of course, I didn't know who he was, my parents bought me the costume and told me it belonged to a brave king, whose heart was that of a lion. I remember being so happy and proud, I just kept saying over and over again that I am Richard the Lionheart! Since then, his image always sticked with me and I like to think that somewhere, far away from here, I made him smile

It just amazes me at the lives these kings lead during that time. Imagine all of the lands he’s traveled and the seas he crossed. This kingdoms he’s ruled and the battles he’s lost. King Richard led a life of battle, adventure and brutality. It’s hard not romanticize his life’s journey given the chaotic and primitive way of life during those early years.

Yep; also, what’s the point of hostages if there’s not a threat against them? I don’t support it by modern ethics (not that we value life all that much even now), but for the culture of the time? I wouldn’t call it an atrocity. Or rather, lay the atrocity a Saladin’s feet: he betrayed the hostages/prisoners he handed over.

I really enjoy this biography on Richard 1, the Lion heart. They do miss the point about the execution of the garrison at Acre. Muslims did not blame Richard but Muslim records show that even in the Muslim eyes the fault was Saladin. He agreed to a settlement that he wouldn’t fulfill. From then on Saladin had a problem garrisoning a city. The soldiers didn’t want to be captured and be sacrificed since Saladin was not trustworthy in their eyes. This is an important fact that was skipped over. But it’s a fun biography.

No one said "must have been," rather "may have been." Since it's merely a description, not an accusation, I don't see the harm in the honest speculation. It was occurring while King Richard was alive and it continues today. If he was gay, that's great. If not, that's great too. Lots of fine people are heterosexual. There's no need to hold that against them.

“Lionheart” added to his name is certainly contributing to his world renown fame, without which he probably would not stand out in history to the extent in which he still is. There were countless other monarchs leading countless war campaigns just like him, yet his character and popularity will remain amongst historians’ favorites. My parents named me after him, and as a child I felt as if I had to live up to the name as a life long personality empowering benediction. The documentary piece presented was very enjoyable to watch and I would love to know more about him. A fascinating fact of his time is probably the unbelievable lack of human life’s value compared to today, and how an average man’s life, when destined to military service was an inevitable early painful gruesome death. What I would like to find out the most about him in more detail is how did Richard the Lionheart stand out amongst his counterparts in bravery and leadership, was he a bold and fearless warrior in battle, was he a skilled fighter or rather he was not afraid to send his soldiers to fight? Being a king on a battlefield must have been a rather protected position so I would think this question is very relevant. His early passing likewise shows that only after so many campaigns, battles and sieges it was a crossbow that took his life, which was the most effective long distance weapon of the time. The fact that his death was a result of a rebellion against him would indicate that the heart he had would not be as appreciated today.

I really enjoyed this rendition of accurate history. But who the fuck cares about his unconfirmed sexuality. That made a weird moment in this whole broadcast which made me wanna turn it off, I didn’t and was not disappointed. Did they mention any other figure of history’s apparent sexuality, nope.

Yah, agreed, although I’m not surprised the narrator mentioned it. It’s been a major part of Richard I “history” for a long long time, but it’s just typical western homophobia. Happens all the time, still happens today (at least in America).

👑King Richard I the Lionheart ⚔ was England's Bravest King. He led from the front, fought in the thick of every battle and siege, he even killed enemies while being sick and carried by 2 men and firing his crossbow picking off saracens. He never lost a battle, conquered Messina in 1 day, conquered Cyprus and captured the Emperor, defeated Saladin in every single battle and siege. Freed many Christians captives, saved a contingent of Templars after being surrounded.
There is no way that rumor of gay is true, first off its told by his enemies, a fact that King Philip II of France was his enemy rather than his lover , he plotted and schemed and backstabbed Richard any time he could during the crusade and was jealouse of him. He plotted with his brother John to take his throne but when Richard arrived in France he defeated Philip in Freteval and Gisors and punished him for everything.

But King Philip during the crusade always was jealous and plotted and schemed against Richard any chance he got, also conspired with his brother John to take his throne, which he forgave. So, the major understandings that I take from this very very interesting and informative documentary is that a) if we are not in an alliance with France we are fighting against them and once we finish fighting them we a ruling them until we are allies again b) the situation in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions is the same today as it was in King Richards crusader years and c) the whole of this era and to the present day are eerily similar, War then Peace and War again. I don’t think we will ever see true peace in the world. Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece of historical timeline and the life of “King Richard the original Lion-heart” maybe on day the three lions will roar again and we will win something more precious than territory……………… The Jules Remy (excuse spelling) trophy (and yes I know it isn’t the Jules Remy trophy anymore, I just wanted the French connotation. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
P.S The fact that King Richard took little to no interest in the fiscal and political running of his kingdom just proves, to me at least, that we are NOT “a nation of shopkeepers” far from it, we ARE a nation of “warriors”, WHEN and IF we need to be.
