    I know it's a pain in the ass for you, but your 'hiking in the rain' footage tends to be my favorite.
    This rainy day episode was particularly pleasant to watch.
    I get to take in the beauty without the stinging nettles.
    I owe you, Matt! Thanks!

      I really like it also. It is far easier these days since I have the umbrella. On the AT it was almost impossible because there was no way to dry the phone off enough to make the screen work.

    To be fair, Matt, you do your videos primarily as a diary for you, as well as a bit of a distraction whilst on the long trip. We’re just fortunate bystanders that get to tag along. I’ve been good with that for some time now. Any gear “reviews” you do are organic - embedded in the normal video - and more a commentary on how the gear is working or not working for you.

    Dude! Another journey through most the paths untraveled! Dogs, blowdowns, stinging shrubbery, just unreal but you keep plugging along. Out of all of the hikers I’ve watched these past 9 years, you, Matt are the GOAT! Keep going and I will see you tomorrow! 🥾⛰️👍

    I like your hiking channel because you hike. Several hikers I followed stopped hiking and now only do gear reviews, or at least the majority of their videos are gear reviews. Please keep hiking and paddling; I love your paddling videos too. Thanks!

    Yes, we call them stinging nettles too
    I have watched your channel for a few years and have always liked your style and editing. The thruhikers I also watch seem to be doing their own editing too. All I know is that I don’t think I’m interested in ever hiking these states but enjoy watching you do it.

    Don’t comment much. But thought I would join in with the praise. I love to hike so actually like a real hiking video. That is opposed to gear ads, “murder hiking” porn and whatever else certain ex hikers post. I like pretending to walk along and knowing where you are because I’ve been there or enjoying new sights.

    Nice recap of your day at the end ! Stinging nettles are the number one reason you will never see an european hiker wearing shorts , there are about a doble dozen different species here .Some can grow to 5 or 6 feet high , but the little species have the most sting . Try to get some vinnager from the trailangel in a little botle , it relieves the pain of the stings.Keep it on.

    That area has been a difficult one historically because of the remoteness. We just had a work party north of where you came on the Buckeye (appalachian wildlife area) and tree fall was a lot less than the previous couple years. Hopefully we can get down there and clear the trail. All sawyers have to be certified now so it is a little harder than it used to be to get trees cut out of the trail.

    Stinging nettles (you were correct as to the name of that plant) are high in nutrients (yes you can eat them), may reduce inflamation, may treat hay fever, may lower blood pressure, and may lower blood sugar levels. Once Jewel weed comes along, the juice of that can be used to reduce the sting. Like the orange drape!

    TH-cam recommended some of the Mississippi river videos to me when y'all were in Minnesota. I live in Indianapolis and had never really searched out hiking or canoeing videos. I went back and watched all the CDT videos as well. The algorithm is a mystery, but I am glad that it brought me here! My mom is also a subscriber now, I think.
    I suspect that the "hunter" who didn't like hikers might actually be a "cook" who doesn't want hikers to discover his kitchen 🙃

      It really seems to pay attention to that location tag which is funny because they don’t make it super apparent how to set that. Like I said, I am really curious to see what happens when I go through more population centers. At which point it’s just whether the thumbnail and the text about hiking in Delaware to San Francisco is enough to make people click.

    Here is a theory: I started watching another channel where Noraly drives her motorcycle through different countries. It seems that her videos started to show up in my feed when she traveled through my country. Maybe your videos will show based on the location where you upload?

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is actually a location you set during uploading. TH-cam seems to really pay attention to that and push videos to people on the homepage that are located near them. That’s why a few of the Mississippi videos went so big. It’ll be interesting to see how the videos through Cincinnati and such do

    I fully agree that the gear videos and terrible clickbait thumbnails are trash. I can't really put up with any of those channels.
    The thing here is to see what the trail is all about, and that's useful as I'm planning a coast-to-coast hike.

    I think it also depends on what you are doing. The Mississippi was really cool. I don’t know how these videos are doing compared to Mississippi ones but I know I watch cuz I already know and enjoy your videos. This trail is definitely less appealing to me. I watched most of Constantine’s (Hiking America’s) daily videos of the 11 national scenic trails and I couldn’t make it through the North Country Trail ones. Too much sameness vs some of the other trails. But definitely keep doing what you are interested in and share it. Don’t change for views (which I can’t see you doing at all).

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do worry things will be too same-y sometimes but generally at least on the ground things always seem to happen or change. There are certainly some trails which have a lot more general appeal. The Mississippi videos were some of the most viewed we have ever done, but I equate that to the fact they were pushed out to people and some of the big cities.

    Yours are among the very few daily hiking videos I watch because it's not 99% your face, plus this series is interesting because nobody hikes the ADT. It's like suffer-fest-watching, a variation on hate-watching, to watch this series. I do deliberate searches for people's "full documentary" versions of their thru-hikes or else I search for specific sections i.e. Rawlins to Steamboat or whatever. As for gear, your gear is way too heavy! Those are definitely the stinging nettles that grow in the garden here in California. You can eat them, cooked. Like spinach!

    i would love to see your gear reviews, but while you are using it daily on trail. click bait does work, but it cheapens the brand.
    but most importantly dont conform your content to your audience, let your audience conform to your content. you produce what you love in the fashion you want and it will attract ppl who are fans of you. not just your videos.
