Also, I can't remember if you covered it, but the oil pressure sensor should probably be taken out before removing the bank 1 head...I learned that the hard way. :D

Thank you for this informative video. It so funny that every used car I see seems to need a head gasket. I don't remember ever hearing about head gaskets going except maybe in racing type etc. Is this because of the aluminum heads and cast iron blocks?
There's oil the hits some piece of metal it looks like a heat shield right below the were there are 3 spark up wires along that line but a bit lower that's were the oil is hitting. To me it looked like a cat converter and I know there is one under the car. But it looks like there's one on the side as well. I'm so stupid when comes to cars. Great video just Curious what or The symptoms for valve seat issues p0300 ? are did u do a relative compression check ? Can u see intake vacuum changes on a vacuum gauge ?
+jim dandy The old ones had valve seat issues so it would need to have machine work done and all new valves I believe it was $30 more per head to get perfectly done reman heads.
Great video,I have an 04 Ford Taurus with a PO401 code, watched this video to locate the DPFE sensor,it's kinda hidden back there a bit behind the UIM,is there a trick to getting that replaced without having to pull that UIM,all the symptoms are leading to this part failing,by the way,you do excellent work and are def a top notch mechanic,I watched the whole video even though i don't need a head gasket job done, lol
Anyway of telling the difference between a leaking head gasket and a warped head/engine? My 02 flex fuel Taurus overheated pretty good and now the coolant in the coolant reservoir bubbles(only seems to bubble after the engine has been running and/or I remove the coolant reservoir cap) without overheating. Their is no white or blue smoke form the exhaust, but the engine does miss fire like it wants to stall.
You have to take it off and check it with a straight edge. But for sore you have a failed gasket that is leaking compression to the coolant, the question now is, if you have a warped head. And the follow up question is, can it be machined
Nice job. You're a Godsend. I replaced the headgaskets on my vulcan years ago. I could have saved a lot of time if your video was available then. Can you tell my why these things fail so frequently? I have a buddy with a Ranger 3.0l ....same thing. It looks like the fire-ring cracks near the exhaust valve area and combustion gas starts working on the fiber material eventually getting to a water passage. I would like to know how to prevent/delay this from happening again on my car. The first ones failed at 220k miles. It's sneaking up on 350k now and the next time they fail....the car is going to be scrapped....the body is getting too crunchy to put money into her.
Brent Richardson At 220k I would say that is good. I know the original gaskets were revised. Also this is before the great multi layer steel gaskets. The ones I have seen have failed from sticking thermostats overheating them. This particular one was a valve seat issue which they are just known for poor design.
Amen brother on the mls gaskets, unfortunately, I couldn't locate a set for it. Vulcan has a low mep compared to most engines. I guess it doesn't warrant a premium gasket. Thanks for the info. I'll just drive her into the ground. I'm hoping my newer '08 3.5L will last half as long as this one has.
I don't mean to question you but do you HAVE to pull the rockers just to do the lower intake? The taurus forums said you don't have to. Im unclear on why you would need to. I've never worked on a ford engine before. Thank you for any help you can provide. Excellent video.
While you may be able to sneak it past coming off it will be harder going back on and when you line up the lower intake of this style you want to set it down perfect.
Thanks dude.. I have a oil leak I think it's hitting the cat there on the side of the motor I can't tell were it is coming from. The valve gasket?? The head gasket?? Or any other gasket lol.. Its 2003 taurs 3.0 wagon the cars runs great but when I throw on the heat I get a slight oil burn smell thanks dude great channel as well
How hard is it to change the spark plugs on the back side of the engine? I need to replace the valve cover gaskets but man it looks like a crazy amount of work!
Question, Well first you have very good explanation. Question, you don't mention anything about setting engine to TDC before disassembly, Is that not required on these electronic controlled engines? Also You didn't mention about the heads if you sent them out for freshening up or you just cleaned them up there at the shop, plus you did mention checking head surface for warpage with feeler gauge. If you can let me know if you had to set to TDC before and the other issues that would be very helpful. Thank You in Advance.
+Rudy Montes No need to set anything to tdc on OHV engines timing is not touched. I thought I did mention so many of the valves seats were worn we actually got a set of reman heads.
Awesome. Thanks. All the manuals say to set to top dead center first. I was originally only going to do my intake, so I did not set to top dead ctr. Am I okay, as long as I do not rotate the crankshaft while working?
You don't need to set it to anything, the cam crank correlation never changes on these with this repair and therefore the valves will be all in the right place upon install.
What did you use to clean the head gasket surface in the block?! Most people want to know or see it being done that since it's very important. You obviously used since sort of power tools cause you can see the marks. I was always told never use any spinning tools. You can see markings from the tool you used... Is that okay?
Excellent workmanship one other thing…..all engines are metric unless they are older. Even in America. Please invest in a quality set of metric wrenches, etc.
I was wondering what kind of drill are you using. Could you provide the exact brand so that I can get one? By the way superb video, the dedication, articulation, and detail oriented are beyond anything out there.
Hello, I have found your video extremely helpful. I purchased the engine gasket set in the description and now I'm putting the motor back together. The Gasket set is Fel-pro and I noticed that it isn't exactly the same as the original ford gasket (it doesn't have the tabs on the top of the gasket that protrude inward towards the intake manifold and it doesn't have the tab that fold inwards on on the face of the gasket like the original gasket did). If you pull up the Fel-pro 95372 it has 2 voids on the face of the gasket instead of a protruding tab. Should I cut the gasket and make a tab? I'm confused and looking for a hand thank you.
Graet video sir. I have a 1994 ranger 3.0 with I think, blown head gasket. I am going to replace gasket(s) but I do not have extra or a way to have heads resurfaced. My question is, can or should I use copper spray gasket maker on the head gaskets. I have not dissambled yet so this is supposing no cracked head. I was also looking for part 2 of this video so I can install rockers/pushrod. Thank you
Hello Sir...what size is the stud remover??? I have to do this job on my 04 Taurus se. Awesome video and very detailed!!! My head needs to be fixed if its not too bad that I must replace it. I just need to know the size of that stud remover tool you used Sir. Thank you So much!!!

Thanks. I had a hell of a time unplugging the O2 sensors. It's always the electrical connectors that seem to be glued together. Seems all of them release by pushing in on the locking tab EXCEPT for the power steering connector where you have to pull the locking tab down and be careful not to break it..
Hey, I have to say you did a very thorough walk through. I have a couple questions for you though. 1. Is this the same 3.0 as in my Ranger? It looks to be but wanted to make sure. 2. On mine I have recently had a coolant leak which looks to be coming from the head gasket below the front freeze plug on the passenger side, I haven't done a compression check yet. If it passes a compression check, do you think I could get away with out having to get the heads resurfaced? Also how long do should it take from start to finish?
Yes this engine is the same just mounted different. I would take a close look at the front cover they leak from the top of the cover at the pressurized coolant passage and spray all over and or seep making you think it is the heads. Heads are very uncommon for coolant leaks, pressure test and look very close at front cover. I also have a video on the front cover on these engines you can reference.
I took the alternator bracket out of the way, cleaned the whole area and sprayed cable clean, & pressure tested. You can see the small leak start in the little lip between the head mating surfaces, then run down the groove. A few Co workers have recommended stop leak, but I don't trust that. If it's going to plug that whole, what else would it plug? Like I said I haven't got to pressure test it yet to see if it's also getting into cylinder #1, do to not having the time, but it is in the plans before weeks out. It is a slow leak, & only when under pressure.
On second look I see what you mean. I was inspecting the image in the video with the heads off, & the photo I took off the leak area and to have a point. Thank you. I though the housing stopped where it curls down, didn't realize that it has a little more meat to it. Thank you I will indirect further.
I just had this done to my 02 sable my question is do you have to replace timing chain after you do this or no car runs fine when you get it started but when trying to start sounds like the timing might be off because its hard to start car without putting your foot on gas
Hello again. I still cannot get the exhaust manifold back on the cat converter correctly. It seems impossible. Is there something I missed in your video? The cat converter near the radiator has a flange on it with bolts coming through. You simply set the exhaust manifold down inside that. and put the bolts back on the flange and tighten. I have a gap and you can see the threads of the bolts in between where the two meet. But there is no way for it to go up any farther?
I have 97 taurus with suspected blown head gasket that I am debating whether to fix. wife's grandmother's car. about 120K on it I think. we just started using in recently. wife was driving on trip and had lack of power up hills. When she got to where I was I looked it over and it has milky oil, gases in coolant bottle, and lot of white quickly dissipating smoke (steam?) out exhaust. I just don't want to do the work to find cracked block, warped heads or something that makes job much more expensive. She had mentioned in past no heat. I think I may have added coolant and perhaps bled system, don't remember. I know the MIL was on at times. wife doesn't recall whether the overheat light came on at all. Any thoughts, or do you just have to rip apart to see? This happened last Thanksgiving and when I went home to where we left car last year, I tried to look over. It started right up with a jump. But is it shot from sitting in this condition-water in engine?
I have a 2002 taurus wagon with the vulcan 3.0. Its burning coolant off of the inside of the exhaust manifold and overheating. Is this possibly just a lower intake gasket or is this a head gasket ? Thanks
Loved the video. What is the stud removal socket you're using and if there are different sizes, what size is this one? I'm getting ready to work on my engine and I want to have everything I need laid out.
Im looking to buy a 2006 Taurus se. The car sounds amazing and is very quiet. When i check the oil, its nice and clean. There is no smoke out of the exhaust. But i n the antifreeze fill its a milky orange. Any clue on the problem? If you have a way to for me to send you a picture, let me know
Hey I just did my 3.0 ranger ffv, I worked as an auto mechanic for just over 4 years now and know these motors pretty well but anyway after the head gasket (and new head castings with valvework done at machine shop) I developed a very slow, small coolant consumption problem and it’s very annoying, I want to run a radiator bubble test with the color changing fluid to hopefully narrow it down to the intake, btw aren’t you supposed to tighten the heads WITH the lower intake in sequence because I see with the 4.0 ohv cologne engine the haynes manual says to do this, only because the way the engines are set up are pretty similar on the top end
on my 99 3.0 ranger no compression in cylinder 5 I think I got the same issue one of the valves ain’t seating properly or burnt valve the trucks only got 150k on it to I’m wondering of just replacing the driver side head that has no compression only because the passenger side head has great compression I don’t think I wanna mess with that one what do u think I should do should I just do both?
Great video. I have the same engine it seem to idle rough at startup every morning, after cars warm up it goes away . I have to no codes , any ideas? Thanks
Just a shot in the dark, since it was my problem anyway, check the idle air control valve. It's super easy to reach. Take it off and clean it. If it works, it works. If not, you didn't waste too much time.
I have followed your procedure for this, but all I did with mine was change the lower intake gaskets. Of course I pulled the rocker arms off with the push rods, cleaned everything down and buttoned it all back up. Now I am loosing compression in one cylinder when I crank it over. I got it to start up for a minute but I shut it down quickly since it was running really rough. What on earth did I do wrong?? Will a poorly seated rocker arm cause this problem?
Hey I received aftermarket head gasket for 01 Mazda b3000 and 1 big journel opposite ends is blocked off water pump should I cut it out or leave blocked? Thanks
Hey Brian, do you have to set the engine to #1 TDC when putting new tensioners in a ford v6 4.0 sohc, I heard someone say this but I thought they were wrong, figured I'd ask the man.
Unrelated to this, but, does that vacuum distribution box have some kind of a check valve that's supposed to work? I'm getting a lean code on my 05 Taurus and it goes away when I pinch the tube off on the other side of the valve cover vent hose.
I followed this step by step. But when I put the exhaust manifold back to the cat converter I have like a 3/8 inch gap where the two meet. Is this supposed to be there or do I not have it on all the way? My car is running fine now but I have exhaust smoke coming from this connection.
Thanks. I figured it wasn't supposed to be there. I pushed it up as far as it will go and the when tightened the gap is still there. I put a used cylinder head which had the exhaust manifold already connected so perhaps they changed something from the 2002 to the 2004 model. This is a great video which was incredibly informative and really helped me fix this vehicle. I just have to figure out what went wrong on the exhaust manifold.
the tensioner pulley on my 02 taurus has a torx bolt that someone was kind enough to completely strip the head, can i do this job without pulling the tensioner and just take off the pulley wheel?
You did a excellent job , I loved so much your video .Do you have a video for 2002 ford Taurus motor mount and transmission mount change ? 3.0 v6 OHV Vulcan Thank you
Never re use head bolts unless u wanna end up doing the job all over again because it would cause problems spend the extra 20 dollars an get u head bolts
Thanks for the video. I learned a lot. Video gave me the confidence to attempt replacing my lower intake. Replacing the intake gaskets, I bought a set from autozone. The upper intake came with the 3 sets that go on the upper, however they also gave me another gasket that goes between the upper and lower. My car did not have one before. Also you didn't use one and I haven't seen anyone else use this. Now my car idles roughly. Do you think it's because I used this extra gasket?
Been following your video but did not set #1 cylinder to TDC before I sent out heads to machine shop to be redone, Heads are now redone and ready for re install do I need to do anything with TDC ? On the video it looks like #3 and #4 cylinders are at tdc. None of my cylinders are at tdc. Did I mess up?
I did have one question, how did you get the block so clean before putting the head gasket on? Mine is no where near that polished and has staining from the old gasket.
For this ford taurus the torque specs for the rocker arms? I did 11ft.lbs. first then I believe it was 24 after? By the way the taurus is running perfectly. Good job on the videos.
PLEASE, I need help finding the "compression ring" (between the rear exhaust manifold to cat converter) I've looked everywhere and can't find the correct gasket. Thank you
I'm going to be dropping the y-pipe assembly from the exhaust manifolds in order to replace the oil pan gasket. I understand there is a steel ring gasket for the rear cat to rear exhaust manifold. Is there a gasket for the front cat to front exhaust manifold?
hey..i need to ask you this..when you clean gasket leftover from the block..doesn't it go to the oil and coolant passage..how do you clean this?? or you just ignore it and just do an oil change? i'm new to this stuff..please bear with me..tq

Dude what part of the country do you live I would love for you to work on my car. You look like a real honest tech.. Thanks man I'll make sure I'll press the like button and post on fb for people to subscribe to your channel...
Garry Roth I am in the chicagoland area.
Oh probably an hour and 15 minutes.
Excellent vid
About how long does it take to do the job?
Muy buen procedimiento, excelente video, saludos desde México
Great video just Curious what or The symptoms for valve seat issues p0300 ? are did u do a relative compression check ? Can u see intake vacuum changes on a vacuum gauge ?
Crazy! Seems like the whole thing was gutted just to get to it. What's your system for reassembly? So many bolts and things were removed.
Interesting video- any reason for replacing the heads with remans instead of decking the old ones? Did the Taurus have a head gasket problem ?
Wow! Thus is collage education. I'm the only student ❤.
This is a good reference. Learning a lot. Thanks for producing.
Thanks dude.. I have a oil leak I think it's hitting the cat there on the side of the motor I can't tell were it is coming from. The valve gasket?? The head gasket?? Or any other gasket lol.. Its 2003 taurs 3.0 wagon the cars runs great but when I throw on the heat I get a slight oil burn smell thanks dude great channel as well
Garry Roth If it is oil then it is almost certainly coming from the oil pan gasket itself.
Oceans on the radio in the background. Love that song.
Awesome.

Your video saved me so much time. You are truly a Godsend.
Please invest in a quality set of metric wrenches, etc.
we did.
I was wondering what kind of drill are you using. Could you provide the exact brand so that I can get one? By the way superb video, the dedication, articulation, and detail oriented are beyond anything out there.
The electric drill? It is a Bosch PS41

Thank you for you prompt response.
Thank you
Foud part 2 great videos, Thank You for sharing your skills
Ok, I do not have the fuel disconnect tool. Is there some way I can improvise to remove the fuel line?
N3ver mind figured it all out thanks to your videos
Hello Sir...what size is the stud remover??? I have to do this job on my 04 Taurus se. Awesome video and very detailed!!! My head needs to be fixed if its not too bad that I must replace it. I just need to know the size of that stud remover tool you used Sir. Thank you So much!!!
+Unique Touch I am not sure on the size I used this stud installer/remover kit it covers them all-www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HTAXFQ/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000HTAXFQ&linkCode=as2&tag=fordt-20&linkId=DKUVJVYTFXTIY2RB
Thanks. I had a hell of a time unplugging the O2 sensors. It's always the electrical connectors that seem to be glued together. Seems all of them release by pushing in on the locking tab EXCEPT for the power steering connector where you have to pull the locking tab down and be careful not to break it..
What is the torque specs for the rocker arms. You mentioned torquing them, but torque to what?
Hey, I have to say you did a very thorough walk through. I have a couple questions for you though. 1. Is this the same 3.0 as in my Ranger? It looks to be but wanted to make sure. 2. On mine I have recently had a coolant leak which looks to be coming from the head gasket below the front freeze plug on the passenger side, I haven't done a compression check yet. If it passes a compression check, do you think I could get away with out having to get the heads resurfaced? Also how long do should it take from start to finish?
Also its 1 2001.
Haven't checked compression*
They come in a kit either was I believe it was the 10mm one. Here is the kit I use- OTC 6987 Metric Stud Remover
Im looking to buy a 2006 Taurus se. The car sounds amazing and is very quiet. When i check the oil, its nice and clean. There is no smoke out of the exhaust. But i n the antifreeze fill its a milky orange. Any clue on the problem? If you have a way to for me to send you a picture, let me know
what year Taurus is this and is the process the same on a 2002 ford Taurus??
+mark lee Thanks I'll try that
could be the intake gaskets leaking causing rough idle even more when the weather is colder
I have 93 ranger 3.0 engine.
Can you RECOMEND a slightly more aggresive cam.
thank you for all your help. I have a 2003 with the vulcan
thanks for the videos. newbie in the club.
great work, great video. hey is this the mitsubishi 3.0L engine, same as used in late 80's Dodge caravan?
+JDHammondman No, the Mitsubishi engine (6G72) you're thinking of had SOHCs not OHV, similar displacement though.
Great video. Can't find the intake manifold bolt sequence. thank you
Hey I received aftermarket head gasket for 01 Mazda b3000 and 1 big journel opposite ends is blocked off water pump should I cut it out or leave blocked? Thanks
I got a dead skip on number two cylinder what would be the best way to diagnose that
Hey Brian, do you have to set the engine to #1 TDC when putting new tensioners in a ford v6 4.0 sohc, I heard someone say this but I thought they were wrong, figured I'd ask the man.
Unrelated to this, but, does that vacuum distribution box have some kind of a check valve that's supposed to work? I'm getting a lean code on my 05 Taurus and it goes away when I pinch the tube off on the other side of the valve cover vent hose.
Do you have a video showing how to get that spark sync lined up correctly. I accidentally moved mine. 😔
I have the same exact car and I’m gonna do this same thing soon
I followed this step by step. But when I put the exhaust manifold back to the cat converter I have like a 3/8 inch gap where the two meet. Is this supposed to be there or do I not have it on all the way? My car is running fine now but I have exhaust smoke coming from this connection.
There should be no gap ever.
3.0 v6 OHV Vulcan Thank you
Are you sure the head bolts are stretch bolts because I'm looking at Alldata now and it does not say replace head bolts. Thank you.
Yes every head bolt I have ever seen or used is TTY
Never re use head bolts unless u wanna end up doing the job all over again because it would cause problems spend the extra 20 dollars an get u head bolts
What years had aluminum valve covers and which are least leak prone, plastic or alum?
How much does a job like this cost?
I heard Oceans playing in the background! Glory to God
🐾Good! Morning and have a happy and safe 4the of July. 🇺🇸🎆
Hi my hubby took off the head gaskets but they had water in them
Do you have a way i can get ahold of you? I have a question about my moms Taurus
You don't need to set anything at tdc. Cam crank correlation are never changed because they are still times we never touch the timing chain on these.
at 42:00 you were mentioning the lifters. how can you tell if one is collapsed? (with the engine running)
lower compression, noise, misfire or abnormal engine noises like a tick or compression noise.
about to do the same thing to my 2002 ford taurus how much did this all cost you
what is the exact name of the ring that you said must be replaced, between rear cat and manifold?
👍Great video. Thx for this!
Daughters 02 Taurus needing same.
-GREAT JOB!
Thanks again.✌️
I did have one question, how did you get the block so clean before putting the head gasket on? Mine is no where near that polished and has staining from the old gasket.
For this ford taurus the torque specs for the rocker arms? I did 11ft.lbs. first then I believe it was 24 after? By the way the taurus is running perfectly. Good job on the videos.
PLEASE, I need help finding the "compression ring" (between the rear exhaust manifold to cat converter) I've looked everywhere and can't find the correct gasket. Thank you
What size was the head bolts do you have a link for the tool
I wish I would’ve watch this before I did mine I forgot to put those Ian seals in do you reckon it’ll work
It will have a major lower intake leak. If it does start, it will run very poorly.
I'm going to be dropping the y-pipe assembly from the exhaust manifolds in order to replace the oil pan gasket. I understand there is a steel ring gasket for the rear cat to rear exhaust manifold. Is there a gasket for the front cat to front exhaust manifold?
Andy Ammons No gasket for the front cat no.
Did you disassemble and clean those heads?
are those standard headgaskets or mls gaskets.awesome video btw
Thanks! These ones are standard gaskets, I have never seen MLS gaskets on any 3.0l Vulcan.
If obviously this engine over heated to warp enough blowing the gasket, it would be wise to replace both head gaskets...no?
hey..i need to ask you this..when you clean gasket leftover from the block..doesn't it go to the oil and coolant passage..how do you clean this?? or you just ignore it and just do an oil change? i'm new to this stuff..please bear with me..tq
Vacuum it out.
Today july 2nd I'm doing it 05 sable I'm going to follow all thi video
Take the cowl off by the firewall and wiper blades and it's gives you a ton of room. Not hard to remove either
I don't think he really needed to for this job.
