    Here in the Virgin Islands 🇻🇮 some folks secure fishhooks on the ropes about 4 feet from the crab pots. The hooks are secured with the points facing downwards. A would be poacher would begin to pull up the pot to only be surprised at the last four feet of the rope. If they are lucky enough,they would escape with minor injuries. If YOU are lucky enough, you may not find any crabs in your pot, but the poacher will still attached to your line when you come to check out your catch. It’s cruel but so is stealing and for that,we don’t really have a poaching problem anymore .

    my first ones down. Sad that you have to sit out there with a gun to protect your property. If you watch people departing the boat ramp
    only about 60 to 70 % even have crab pots with them, the rest are going poaching!!!!! 3 times i ,v come had to jump in the back of

    • @EricValor
      @EricValor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@FishermansLife Yeah I was gonna say just stick around and fish within sight, even just catch-n-release. Then zip up on'em with the camera rolling for evidence for Fish&Game or police. The drone is a good idea because they won't see it coming until it's too late and the camera can get enough identity. Then go back and wait at the harbor... That shit really frosts me. People don't have any damn manners anymore.
      Or just get small cheap padlocks because they won't have anything onboard to cut them off. But I would rather wait for them in the harbor and deal with them myself...

      @@alexramos9263 Why drive and drink? You could spill your beer. South Padre Island is just 30 minute drive away. Nothing like a long day at work and going to fish after with ice cold beer. Its nice having a cooler that can withstand 100+ degree days in your truck for a few days without stopping for cold beer and/or ice everyday.

    Like I told diehard fishing we use colored zip ties to close our crab pots so that if somebody poach from us at least we know that area is productive. It is better than second guessing or moving the pot from a potentially productive area.

    A reel is basically a winch. You use your dominant hand to wind. If you’re right handed you use your right hand to hammer, turn a winch, sharpen a pencil with a manual sharpener, use a screwdriver, write, etc. that’s why you’ll see commercial and professional fisherman use right sided conventional reels. Newer fisherman learn to use a spinning reel that is left sided because of the how it is set up and when they transition think the conventional reels are suppose to be on that side as well. Spinning reels are faced downward and spin horizontally. I guess it’s how you’re taught or how you learn. If you’re right handed and want to use your left hand for reeling more power to you. It’s pretty much your preference. You can also throw a ball with your left hand if you want.
