That fill by Kai on "on these strange islands" whilst doing 16s on the double kick is utterly ridiculous. My mind will never fathom how a human is able to do that

There are more drummers who can do it. In death metal, there are lots of people like that. But they all needed years of training to be able to do it. It's not something you can do as a beginner after a few hours of practice.

I think this song is the first to have finally claimed the throne of "my favourite NW song" - which is wild since like, how can you even pick a favourite? But I think An Ocean of Strange Islands has combined all pieces that I love from Floor era Nightwish into one epic song! :D

    • @Dthamilaye

Yeah... it definitely is up there with my other top NW songs. I like pretty much all NW songs, though, but there are some ~10 or so that I think are my favourites. And this one got into that group, definitely. One of the best from NW.

I concur! The whole CD is amazing! Tuomas is moving into the realm of being one of the, if not the best composers ever! Personally I find Tuomas is the greater musician / composers of this era! I can only think of one person that has the talent...that is "Sir Elton John." He started from humble beginnings to a Super Star! I was fortunate enough to see him in his early years, at the local University's Football Stadium that had around 3000 people in a 35,000 seat stadium!

  • @ImmortalDecember

Nightwish have polarized fans and critics on every single album since Dark Passion Play - never listen to what a few loudmouthed opinions try to tell you lol. Especially since the popularity of reaction videos exploded during the pandemic, so did the fan base as the Floor's stratospheric vocals in their live performances brought in a new era of mainstream audiences. Because the music of Nightwish has such universal appeal, the new fandom became enamoured with their live videos only. Many newer fans insist that their live versions are better than the studio recordings, and have not even taken to dive into their groundbreaking symphonic production to take in all the nuances and intricacies of the exquisite London orchestra and choir. Nightwish albums are played by an 100 piece ensemble, not just the 6-piece band.
TL;DR - Floor did her job too well in drawing new fans, but they forgot to pay attention to the whole picture of NW. If you claim to be a fan but dismiss the patience to listen what they truly are sonically, beyond their live re-arrangements, then - "yours is an empty hope".

    • @MartinGoede
      @MartinGoede 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@@shorey66 Sorry, I think you're wrong. I can hear Floor fine on all of them, on some there is the obvious choice to place Floor more with the choir. I get that you don't like that choice, but that choice IS part of those songs. You might think about why, because it might be a valid reason (as part of the story for example).
Still, the words are still clearly hearable, as are the other parts of the song which you might have missed without this mix.

    • @shorey66
      @shorey66 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@MartinGoede that fair enough. I completely disagree though. You don't waste an international talent like floor by shoving her in with the choir.

The first single was objectively really poorly mixed, especially the cymbals and vocals. It's easy to get swept up by the hype when a band you like releases a new song, but it doesn't mean everything they do is flawless.

@@Hettmaraccording to you and some other but if that's what Tuomas wanted to do then that argument doesn't hold water. • @DanTheSqueegeeMan

@@javirios9234 Well... there are many albums out there, even from prolific artists and bands, where the mixes or masters are questionable to say the least. For some of them, even the artists afterwards weren't too happy with it. It's not all Tuomas', right? There are people who do the mix and mastering, there are labels and publisher who have something to say about it....
I agree with Hettmar on the mix of Perfume. Most peolple critisize the buried voice. I criticize mostly the extreme compression of everything, which makes it a track without soul for me. And if that happens, that is a poorly mixed track.
Of course it's always subjective, if the mix is great for you.... fine. But if sounds poor for others, pls don't try to talk them out of their opinion.
Having said that, yes, the band has every right to shape their sound like they want to, and it's more than fair to let them release their full album before judging them. Still, the fan has equally every right to express their opinion, as long as it is polite.

@@DanTheSqueegeeMan I'm not trying to talk anybody of any opinion. People like what they like but I know when I hear a bad mix but in my opinion this isn't it. How many times will it be said that Floor's drowning of the voice was done on purpose. The other two singles don't do that and that is proof enough for me.

People are easily grown in to habits and music. After Human Nature there was also criticism, while most of us enjoy that album a lot. Yes, it is different, but it grows in you. I am sold by this beautiful music piece, I absolutely love the ballad on this album (no spoilers) and am so pleased with this new album. They have the guts to continue their musical journey and go in all kinds of directions. This is not background music on a party or at work. It is too complex musically and emotionally and the lyrics are too beautiful and deep for that. This is music that keeps giving us new things, each time we listen to it. How special is that?
I love all their music and with Floor also coloring the old tracks, we are so spoiled with stunning music❤
Please stop the music and give us your thoughts, do not be afraid to interrupt. If we want to hear the whole song we can. I love your thoughts about their music and as a pretty routined musician, you learned me some things with your analyzes and thoughts, which is great. Thank you and much love ❤️ from Holland.

I don’t mean within the music industry, which would like to keep them the same, but rather to develop and grow as individual musicians, which will keep them engaged and interested. It’s a lifelong process for them. I certainly don’t want them to stop.

Very well said, great reaction! If a fan of "old Nightwish" doesn't like the new way Nightwish now is going they can stop listening to the newer albums and stick to the older ones. Me personally I love the way Nightwish follows since EFMB and this new album is really a masterpiece. I have listened to it yesterday evening and was very impressed, not only because of the heavier songs like this one but also about the softer ones. I love the duets of Floor and Troy, especially in Sway (reminds me of Harvest) and Lanternlight. Believe it or not Chase, having listened to the new Nightwish album release multiple times, the three released singles "An Ocean of Strange Islands" "Perfume of the Timeless" and "The Day Of" as great as they are, aren't in my top 5 songs from the new album "Yesterwynde". That's how phenomenally good this new album is. For me, "Yesterwynde" as a collective is one of the most cohesive pieces of work that I have ever had the pleasure and privilege to listen to and contemplate. Happy birthday, Chase!!! Didn't know you share a birthday with my father! And on Talk Like a Pirate Day, no less!!
Thank YOU for being here always. Saturday morning tea time wake n bakes to your Nightwish breakdowns literally saved my life, so I will be here for these in a heartbeat! Hope you make it to SF again in the future, would love to grab a drink during a Sleep Token show or some such!

At last! I've been waiting 😄
Just finished listening the album. Needs more listenings for sure, but I already think this song is my favorite.
    Happy birthday Chase 🎉
    Edit after watching your reaction:
I think a lot like you. Let them do their thing. I might not always like it, but I respect it nevertheless. And who am I or anyone to say that they should have done something differently.
I'm so happy about this reaction! Glad you liked it 😊

Happy Birthday… such a great metaphor both lyrically and musically of our journey in life (the frenetic nature of it, the highs and lows, loves gained and lost, the joys the pain, gaining friends and watching them get old and die and then facing our own mortality “freely and without fear”. Such a great song. Can’t wait till tomorrow to hear the whole album 🤘

I got the Album today 19th day as a preorder, unfortunately had my Calendar filled all the way up to the 9 pm local time, so just before starting to listen the whole Album and songs in order while burning the Graveyard shift hours, I did a quick peek at TH-cam, saw Chase reaction and stopped the press, had to see this no matter what :) I got the excellent feeling from his Reaction, especially seeing the smile lurking in the pivotal moments, made me also very Happy!

I have been waiting your reaction to this, because of your insights, but also amount of the air drumming 😁 I guess you have grown to this band already, because if this would been your very first reactions, if I remember correctly, your hands would been needing a medical care 😉
Authentic reaction is the best gift for all of us, and your face expression proved it, when this birthday present opened up after 10 seconds. It was not granny’s made woolen socks or boring designer vase, but something much more exciting 👌😄 Thank you for your reaction, …and happy birthday 🎂

I just found you and watched this one and your very first nightwish reaction. Many reactors just listen to nightwish and tell me afterwards what we already know. Great music. But you are able to recognise what makes their songs so special. And you are able to explain this in a phenomenal well-founded and friendly way. I love it! Thank you for this kind of reacting to Nightwish! ❤

I've been listening to Nightwish since their first album, with a few "dark ages". I love that it is a journey with musical creativity, new discoveries and evolution.

I have just watched your reaction and it was a honour to hear this new Nightwish track for the first time with you as I had a feeling you would love it. I watched a few people reactions to the previous releases and couldn't believe some of the things they were saying but I suppose they are entitled to their opinion. Love this track and can't wait to just sit and listen to the album.

Thanks for sharing your respectful reaction to a song that for me explores themes of solitude, self-discovery, and the existential journey through life's trials. The imagery of the ocean, islands, and mariners reflects a metaphorical exploration of the human experience connecting with other individuals. The song captures the essence of navigating life’s uncertainties and finding one's place in a vast, often unwelcoming world. It suggests a longing for connection and understanding while grappling with the weight of past experiences and the isolation they can bring.
P.S. Butterflies represent transformation on all levels, claims ecotherapist Anna Cariad-Barrett: "Butterflies show us how we can go within ourselves to dissolve old forms and morph, rebuilding and evolving ourselves," she explains, noting that they show us the importance of surrender and trust "as part of the essential process of growth and renewal."
    P.S.S. Happy birthday.

Happy birthday! My birthday was the 12th. Nightwish chose an excellent month to bring out the new album. It's a great album imo. And indeed it's a journey, not a collection of songs. This song to me is new Nightwish with an oldschool Nightwish feel. It's unpredictable, mischievous and grande.
