It's an individual's opinion on whether something is overrated or not. To you and for your life style it's seems to not be. For her and others...it is for them. I think it's silly to to pretend that you. OPINION of natural hair is a fact, when it's not. It's just an opinion or preference. Me personally, I think as long as my hair is healthy...it doesn't matter if it's natural curly or relaxed. It's up to the individual how the enjoy wearing their hair, which THEY ARE ALLOWED TO CHANGE. We are not in a cult.

I think she means more so from a manageability perspective. Let’s be honest, our hair can take A LOT of care and time and it can be frustrating. I honestly don’t mind because I’ve learned how to cut my time down after years of being natural and I also make it a very soothing/relaxing experience rather than a chore. I actually look forward to my wash days now!

After realizing the absurdity of how long my wash days are after hearing myself say it out loud to my therapist, I am definitely considering going back to relaxers after 12 years being natural. I have similar length and thickness to her. There’s so many more important things I can be doing with the hours I spend detangling, washing my hair in sections (still tangles) detangling AGAIN, deep conditioning, blow drying and plaiting my hair. My relaxed hair was long too even without me knowing what I know now about hair care.

Soooo I’m not relaxing my hair and i don’t plan to but i agree with this statement! The natural hair movement is actually hella toxic. The stress of not knowing how my hair will look throughout the day, the daily manipulation, the obsession with certain textures, the DAMAGE….judging people based on their hair style and maintenance choices…i got over it. I have about 4 styles that always look good that i enjoy but the other 96% of the natural hair bullshit i am over. The obsession over texture, i don’t even wear my natural texture! I do not enjoy wash n goes. It makes my ends damaged. I wear my hair stretched 100% of the time. I am debating on heat training my hair bc I’ve done it before…but the natural hair community ugh.

I think natural hair is hard to maintain because we just try to do the mooosssttt. We don't use wanna use heat we don't wanna use flat irons we don't wanna color it we don't want to use silicones, soooo many rules. We do everything to avoid damage and is like bruhhh if it were any other hair type we damage the hell out of it but natural hair we always try to keep it in pristine condition. It's unrealistic. I blow dry my hair everytime I wash it or twist it cuz ain't nobody got time to wait for it to dry. I will color it I will press it out I don't give a crap I'm done trying to have the healthiest hair on the block. I don't care if I get heat damage (I haven't got any yet thank goodness). Once in a while the the creamy crack tempts me but then I remember that was also a lot of work too for me so I just chill with my naturally hair for now.

    • @christines1821
      @christines1821 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is how I feel as well now I won’t do things to purposely damage it but I’m gonna enjoy it I jsut flat ironed it. There is a thing called mechanical damage as naturals so not using heat and air drying and not using silicones isn’t everything.

It's like the black community it telling me my hair is the last part of me thats "black enough" but I'm tired of us regionalizing and limited what "black" is. Black is everything and I don't think a black human has to act or do anything to be black at all. The skin should be enough. I'm perking my hair. I'm black, and I'm plenty black enough. Black is diverse and versatile so, stop trying to stereotype it

Yeah natural hair is not easy. Of course, this is to be expected because it is not normalised to us. Some of our mothers passed on the knowledge that relaxing our hair was the only way we could deal with it. I'm glad you did what is best for you. Your hair is beautiful too.
I've been six years natural as well and I am still going through times when I hate my hair. My hair has been dry, breaking, won't hold styles, dull. But I chose not to give up on it. I feel like this is part of the process. Very few people are used to natural hair anyway, so I feel our negative feelings towards it is totally normal. Also, I know that learning about my hair as it naturally grows will be worth it in the end because I can pass on the things I learn to my daughter. She will get to know that her natural hair is totally normal and that she has other options not just relaxers

I disagree. Natural hair is gorgeous not overrated at all. I started my journey over 7 hrs ago, don't regret it at all. Relaxer thinned me bad, took a whole year to grow back thin and bald edges. Now I don't do all the 10 steps. Just wash it, condition it and style it. I wear a lot of scarfs that I tie a bow in front, very cute. I braid my hair underneath, don't wash it for 4-6 weeks and my hair grows 3 inches during that time. And I'm 64 yrs old, hair is thick, healthy and long.
I do wear half wigs in the winter, but not too often. Can't stand weaves and wigs to much. I'll do crochet for a couple of weeks. But I love wearing my own hair. I wear a lot of top buns, very cute.

Yes! I feel like being natural a lot of people think their hair is growing more because of the switch from relaxed but what I really think is happening is that being natural gives people the opportunity to grow with their hair and learn what it likes and doesn’t like and what works for them that’s why people say they see more growth as a natural. When I relaxed years ago I didn’t know anything and wasn’t caring for my hair properly and I didn’t have that option to ignore it once it was natural. I plan to relax again but use the tips and tricks I learned to keep my hair and scalp healthy. I used to relax every couple months as a teen lol it was horrible. Going to stretch these to 2-3 times a year only. I loved being natural but what’s the point if I have to hide my hair because i don’t have time for 5+ hours of washing and styling.

I did the big chop twice. Detangling and braiding my hair hurts. Having natural hair is expensive and time consuming. Some natural products are not even natural ingredients and caused me some breakage. Let’s not forget how expensive wigs & weaves are.

Girl...I feel you!!! I was there and relaxed my hair on 11/27 after being natural since 2014. I have big chopped quite a few times because my hair is very thick and takes a lot of time. I didn't need people's approval when I chose to relax it, I just needed to know that it was the right thing for me at this point in time. I needed my hair to be healthy as that's what I'm about but it wasn't getting the love and care it needed as I no longer had the time and it was tiring having to detangle and style my hair.
As long as your hair is healthy and you have peace of mind that's what matters most.

I get it! I had relaxers for years and when I lived overseas, it was actually easier to get authentic professional relaxers there than it is back in the US where you have a 50% chance of getting fake products! I have no understanding why some relaxers do not sell the real stuff be cause I think that bad experiences with "Professionals" is one reason so many women go natural. I hated going to "Professional" stylist who without fail, caused my hair to break and it led me to going natural. When I finally grew out every inch of relaxer out of my hair, I started turned grey at breakneck speed, so the conundrum became do I dye my hair or relax it? At some point only perm. dye covers grey for greater than 2-3 washes even after a vinegar rinse. I have found that with Natural hair I have more hair in my shower than I ever did when I did my own professional product relaxers. With natural hair I wore more wigs and braiding hair that irritated my scalp. With a relaxer my scalp gets air and as long as I alternate protein with hydration my hair it grows and doesn't break as much as it does in the natural state.

I don’t understand how the natural hair that grows out of your hair is “overrated” 😂 like you’re born that way how can it be overrated. I agree natural hair is hard but that’s cause we keep tryna make it do stuff it’s not meant to do to “fit in”
i saw this video the other day from the 70s or 80s on Instagram and it showed when white women were wearing wigs that looked like Fros !!! We all have options, we can wear our relaxed hair in it natural state, no heat, no color, just wear it as it comes out of our scalp. Or, we can choose to alter the natural hair that comes out of our scalps by coloring it, straightening it, make it curly with roller/flexirods, texlax or relaxer. Just like wearing makeup vs not. You could rock the natural face, no on was born with eyeliner, mascara, lipstick eyeshadow, foundation etc...we have options. Do what works for you at the moment. I was relaxed for years, thick and healthy, decided to go natural because everyone was doing it ..thought I'd try it ...now I'm relaxed after almost 5yrs. I might decide to do something else a month, a year , a few years from now if I get tired of it and want a change. I love healthy hair no matter if it's natural, relaxed, pressed, short, long, curly, straight, fro...wishing the best for everyone on your healthy hair journey

I’m 3 years natural and my hair is pass my shoulders I’m trying to get to butt length. Never will I ever put that crap in my hair again because my scalp broke out with rashes and inflammation and my hair was falling out little by little each day up to college graduation whereas I big chopped the next day afterwards, going natural was the best decision ever because I felt like I was being myself for once and finally getting to appreciate what God made my hair out to be.. I was told my whole life my hair was ugly and difficult, nappy and “bad stuff” I’ve been forced to hide my hair with fake shit for years because I was told by my mom that my natural was not presentable, but now As a grown woman out in the world on her own IDGAF I wear hijabs everywhere I go and worked no one dared to try me with the questioning of my headwraps I even got my dmv photo taken with it on. never will I use relaxers because it’s made out of sodium hydroxide which is used in drain cleaner and other strong substances like weed killer. No thanks! I wear hijabs as a protective style and I have no problem with not showing my hair as often because it’s no one’s business but mine anyways. If I get tired of doing my hair I do the banding method and put on my hijab and go to sleep lol 🌚 but at the end of the day do you sis! I’m just speaking for me why I wouldn’t do it but I love seeing other people’s results

Out of sheer honesty I've been back and forth with relaxing and being natural and I just can't deal with my natural hair. With my hair it doesn't matter if it's relaxed or not, my hair is SUPER thick and it's just too much of a hassle. I wouldn't ever go natural honestly because it's just too much work and I love low maintenance hairstyles. Plus wearing wigs and braids all the time isnt fun. Getting a relaxer doesn't mean I hate myself or my I don't wanna be black(the toxic side of the natural community swears it's true tho) getting a relaxer means Im doing something that works for me.

I believe the natural hair movement came about to free us from the past. We (generationally) experienced so much suffering and shame around our natural hair; our decision to "straighten" it did not come from an organic desire or free will. It was survival. European beauty standards, societal and professional prejudice, etc. essentially pressured POC women to change their hair. So we did. Then...we became empowered with our right to CHOOSE and to embrace who we are. "I'm going back natural bc I CHOOSE to love myself as I am regardless of what anyone thinks." That was extremely healing for our community. Which I believe was the entire point... to heal and to regain confidence in ourselves as we are... vs who society is telling us to be. Now that we've empowered ourselves with self-esteem and choice, that confidence can be brandished anyway we like... without the guilt, shame, or suffering that came with our hair before. We are free. Now, we can say, "I'm straightening my hair BC I CHOOSE TO; not because I'm being pressured by someone else's standards. I believe we had to go through it to realize we are worthy regardless. We are not our hair. Our hair is an extension of who we are... which may change as time goes on. It's sad to see ppl in the community shaming others for embracing their sovereignty. One is no better than the other. It's all about what makes you happy. Time to put those egos to bed and allow Spirit to have the room. Much peace and love to all and all journeys 🥰🙏🏽❤

Natural hair is overrated. I went natural in 2008.
I cut all of my hair off, how most men wear their hair, and attempted to grow it out and I was fed up and went back to be being bald for 12 years.
Now I have locs again and it’s either locs or being bald, because having a natural loose hair is time consuming and too much trail and error. You gotta learn your curl pattern, hair porosity and etc., so anyone in the comments talmbout it’s not overrated is lying.
Some of y’all hardcore, die hard forever naturals with loose hair are toxic. That’s not the point of this video. I digress.

My hair can't grow no matter the regimen offered or demonstrated by the natural community. When relaxed my hair grew to bra-hooked length. I can never achieve wash and go twistouts to neck length. Nightmare! I'm just afraid of the chemical effect of developing fibroids that have been known from chemical relaxer usage.

I'm here because I also relaxed my hair. It hit me when I took out my braids, I couldn't find anyone to do my hair. I'm on bed rest for my 3rd pregnancy so getting my hair braided for 6+hours wasn't an option. Hubby ran to the store and bought me 2 relaxers. Not even 2 boxes could do my hair so the ends still have a lot of texture which I don't mind. But baby🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️ after 10 years of natural, I can go to the store without hours in the bathroom. I feel so free🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿. I have the thickest, kinkiest coils and doing my hair is such a time-consuming struggle. I usually wear my hair in an Afro because I don’t have the will to wash my hair, condition it, comb it and try to do a “low-manipulation” style. My hair also gets dry easily and non of the products I use seem to moisturize my strands well enough. I’ve though about relaxing my hair but I’m not sure. I don’t like the harsh smell of the chemicals and the hairstylists I went to never seemed to wash the relaxer out of my hair properly. I know my hair is more manageable when it’s straight for me. I’ve also thought about heat training my hair too, but silk press for my hair type is harder.

Those were the exact same reasons why I relaxed my hair after 5 years natural. Don't regret it.

I hated my hair when I left the salon after relaxing it for the very first time 6 months ago. It was flat and thin looking, then I washed it that same day and instead of flat ironing I just blow dried and I fell in love. My hair looked thick and full again like I was used to. Now my relaxed blowdried hair looks like my flat ironed natural hair. Very happy with my decision.

At the end of the conversation I am just saying don't use a no lye relaxers because they are calcium hydroxide and they are known to dry out black hair an break it off. Lye relaxers (sodium hydroxide)have to be used carefully too. But they do not lock out moisture. Our hair takes at least three years to grow back. The book Beautiful Black Hair (vol 2) by famous hairstylist Shamboosie explains why calcium hydroxide or no lye relaxers are extremely bad for afro type hair. He recommends Nexus moisturizing shampoos and conditioners.

I love my curls and to be natural but my texture is also different than yours and is more manageable. But natural hair isn’t easy no matter what texture so people should understand why u relaxed. It is also your head, your business, and YOUR TIME. Natural hair takes time and patience. Your hair is beautiful either way. Can’t wait to watch your journey

thank you so much 💕 and you're so right, natural hair requires work regardless of the texture

Lol im laughing because I get your frustration. I think the natural hair movement needed to happen because the problem was there was zero balance. I remember hair stylists didnt even know how to style natural hair and they would pressure anyone to get a relaxer. Now that we've got ourselves somewhere to an equilibrium I think relaxers are okay if you know how to maintain it. Your hair is beautiful in both textures but yes your hair is really thick and full of body. I was natural all my life to my mid-20s, then the natural hair movement started and I relaxed my hair lol.

I got over natural hair at 12 years old...it was too much for me coz mine is the thick type. I literally cut it all off and years later relaxed it. Best decision I've ever made. ♥️

This makes 12 years of me being natural. I'd probably kill myself if I went back to perms, lol... But do what you love ❤

@Mimie N 😛 that’s a little extreme don’t you think babe? I hear you I stopped in 2010 but I entertain the idea of relaxing again sometimes to each their own I guess.

Your story is similar to mine. It's so frustrating and I'm completely over it. I can't wear cute hairstyles, my hair stays matted, yes the mental breakdowns, it breaks off and it's soooooooo thick. I will be going back to relaxed hair later on.

I can relate to this. I have never had a relaxer before but I always got a silk press or back in the day it was called flat iron or press and curl. But anyway these natural Nazis were always telling me I am not natural because I use heat . So I stopped worse decision I ever made. I started to get fairy knots constantly so I had to always cut them. I was never able to wear my hair in a cute style except for a protective style . I got tied of doing this . Seriously what is the point of having long hair if you cant show it off? Tired of buying these 50-11 products that all the natural have out Its was like every day there was a new shampoo or product or oil to buy. To time consuming I would have to take a whole day and put it aside to do my wash day . I probally would get a relaxer if I could find someone that I could trust to do it but I am kinda scared . Maybe in the future I dont know but for right now going back to silk pressing flat ironing my hair I think my hair thrives more better using alittle heat its not bad if you know what you are doing . I think people need to let others do what they want to with their hair and have fun with it

I went 7 years without a relaxer,I’ve cut and damage my hair more when I was relaxer free.on April 8, 2022 I decided to go back because I wanted to see my hair grow without flat ironing it. I don’t feel bad about it. Maintaining natural hair takes a lot of work.
