Hiking Djouce, Wicklow - Irish Peaks

  • A hike up Djouce mountain in Wicklow on a very windy day. Not a day to capture quality footage from higher ground due to the strong wind (and rain) but a day to remember none the less. The GoPro has stabilisation but couldn't compete with the wind - the views from Djouce to the surrounding mountains of Wicklow are always a welcome surprise.
    This route was inspired by the Irish Peaks book from Mountaineering Ireland - a beautiful book with wonderful photos to entice you out to the hills. The book can be purchased at the following link: irishpeaks.ie/
    My first time speaking on a video that I’ve uploaded to TH-cam - putting myself further out of my comfort zone!

      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah thanks Gerry - I know you get it! There may be no going back but another option of bailing is frequently attractive to me too!! It truly has been such a vulnerable journey to date - I don't even mean the speaking, the whole thing. I first started posting by accident in trying to share a video with a pal in the US and I saw TH-cam as a repository for previous videos I'd made...then I just got into it more, learning and being inspired by all of you! Still trying to carve my own path with it all, such a vulnerable thing to do...taking a risk in putting myself out there and facing my own inner critic again and again!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Miriam, not sure how much I believe in accidents😊 Carving your own path in your own time is the way to do it.Totally agree that putting yourself out there is such a big thing to do, with that voice always telling you that it is not good enough!! It has taken me such a long time to build the confidence to talk on my videos and to have a degree of confidence with it, though it has been a worthwhile journey and allows me to share more of what I love with others. Again well done on having the courage to take another step, that is what walking is all about👣😊

      @@MiriamKennedy Well, I'm betting on you! You know, it's interesting to consider the Aran Islands; I've thought about bringing the Brompton to Ireland but had kind of settled on trying to do a long ride in England, mostly due to the wealth of paths there-and the famously narrow roads of Ireland. When I was there eight loooong years ago, rented a cottage near Castlemaine, I asked the owner if there was a store handy nearby. He said oh sure just walk on down (the main highway R561) a quarter mile. Those beautiful fieldstone walls put me about a foot from the passing cars haha.
      You've inspired me to think again. What a kick it would be to see the islands that way! Years ago I went to see the Gallarus Oratory one day, and I was fortunate enough to have about five minutes inside it, all alone. That was a very powerful experience, and I've wished to return to Ireland ever since.
      Hey also-I've watched several of Susanna Thornton's vids, wow she is tough, talk about inspiring. I think she rode a *new* cycle path from Dublin to the West? Are there others you would rec for watching in addition to her and Gerry from Walking and Wild Camping?
      Cheers!

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daveclark8788 Susanna didn't have any new cycle path for her cycle from Dublin to Donegal - she did it on minor roads where possible from what I could see though. I've really very little experience cycling outside Dublin city, I've had a Brompton for many years but it has been a commuting bike for me rather than touring. I only did one other touring trip where I went from Westport to Achill and that was along a cycle path in fairness. So...I've no idea what cycling along the rest of the country will be like. The West Coast is really marketed for cycling the Wild Atlantic Way so I'm assuming there are some decent bike tracks in sections and I've often seen cyclists on those roads. If I make another Brompton trip I'll definitely aim to do sections of the West Coast - amazing scenery and it should be easy to find camping spots. Hiring bikes on the 3 Aran islands is a big thing so taking a bike there really is a great way to explore them!
      For other Irish TH-camrs that I'd recommend - I'm not really sure what kind of style you like and there is such variety...I know you like Gerry (my favourite Irish TH-camr!) but I think everyone seems to have a unique style so its hard to cover all bases. Assuming you like videos of mountain hiking:
      - John Dillon (hasn't posted a video in a long time but he has a beautiful style for the videos he has done).
      - Purple Peak Adventures (again they haven't posted in a long time but they have some amazing footage of their hiking in Ireland).
      - Toms Tours, Ireland (great drone footage)
      - I really enjoy Frozen Mist Wildcamping Ireland, very creative & humourous. There are a number of others, but check out some of those and see if they hit the mark for you!!
      Sounds like you had a very special experience at the Gallarus Oratory - I don't think I've ever been so hopefully I'll get to check it out! A long trip in England in addition to a visit to Ireland sounds like some good plans to have with your Brompton! Hee hee 🙂

      @@MiriamKennedy Hello, I had replied last night, but I had not known about including links in a message, so I'll try again-sans links ;-)
      Mostly, I wanted to thank you for your input, in particular the other You Tubers you directed me to. I watched Colin on Frozen Mist, his vid on Inis Oirr is really stunning, so....thank you, for that and the others, I will enjoy and learn a lot. And yes, Walking is right up there with riding in terms of interest.
      With regards to Susanna Thornton, you're correct-I realized I had read an Irish Times article from September 2019 about riding the Royal Canal Dublin to Shannon, and confused it with her, it's an interesting piece; it sounds like they are trying to stitch it all together path-wise.
      Do you know of the Brompton Traveler channel? Gianni has done a lot of tours on his bike around the world, and has *lots* of helpful info on touring with a Brompton-I love his South England ride story from about seven months ago. He wild camps and does hotels and B & B. It would, indeed, be smashing to do a ride like that and then see the Aran Islands!
      Again, thank you Miriam.

    Nice summary of the hike up. We have been flying from Djouce a few times in 2021. I love this mountain with awesome views when high up. The final glide into the valley and passing above the forest on the east side is always filled with adrenaline. It is a tough hike with 20kg on our back but the effort is worth, when you catch the first thermal.

      Thanks Uri! I can only imagine how good your views must be from high above Djouce - to hike with all your weighty gear takes some dedication to the cause!! It's funny, I started watching a channel from the Peak District that two women were doing walks in and at first they never said a word, it was just views and photos but I was interested as never been to the Peak District. One video, one of then (just like you) started talking to the camera, next video the other joined her friend in speaking to the camera too. After that, you could not shout them both up lol! I still watch and it's a great channel. We have only ever been to Dublin in Ireland watching bands, so never seen any of the countryside, so interested in what you are filming and have to say, it looked stunning, very crisp footage you took as well. The wind looked brutal at the top but great views and loved the rainbow and time - lapse. Good to hear you recovered your drone and I look forward to seeing more of your countryside. Keep up with the taking, you came across very well, cheers Alan

      Thanks so much Alan! That’s funny to hear about the women in the Peak District. There is a definite danger I mightn’t shut up either! I’ve been posting videos for a year and the reason I never spoke was because the videos have always been for me - to remind myself of the feeling I get when I head out on my adventures. I’ve never had any interest in speaking to myself 😊 After a few months I realised there was this community of people that were supportive of what I was doing and some even giving me shout outs in their videos. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all that support and felt like this TH-cam community are actually new friends so why not engage with them a little. Let them get to know me a bit more! It’s not why I originally started making videos so it’ll be an unfolding journey to see what I want to create. It’s great fun though yet pretty exposing! Definitely outside my comfort zone but mostly that feels good! Thanks so much for your encouragement - it spurs me on and motivates me!! Thanks 😉

    Djouce is a great hike from either side, it's my local and I love it. Nearly lost my drone on White Hill once but managed to land it on a railway sleeper and GPS brought me to it, battery was low, stupid mistake 😂! Great video again, take care 👍

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers John, yes Djouce is lovely! I hadn’t started from that particular Carpark before so the route in was new for me. Lucky you to have it as your local - it only takes me about 25 mins to drive there to be honest so I feel very lucky also! With the weather being as it was I didn’t feel I could capture great views, I couldn’t even hold the GoPro when up high. I was a bit disappointed with that but I decided to go ahead and post it anyway. Oh Lord - I know that drone adrenalin feeling oh so well 😉 Great you found yours too. I was really lucky too - at one point it was about 10 meters from me and I was turning it to bring it in but it got carried by the wind a bit and then really quickly I lost sight of it and I couldn’t work out from the view in the app where it actually was - every time I tried to steer it - it seemed to be moving a greater distance from me. In the end the battery failed and it came down. It could have gone anywhere - it’s so open as you know up there with thick heather all around, yet when I looked on the map, it was actually showing really close to the edge of the trail so all I had to do was walk back the trail and it was about 1 or 2 meters from the edge of the trail in the heather - I was so lucky!! I lost a drone up a tower in Donegal about 6 weeks ago so I would have been kicking myself to have lost it 🤦‍♀️

      Thanks so much for the encouragement, I really appreciate it! It was a little monkey on my back for the last while - I started putting videos on TH-cam as I wanted to send one to a friend in the US a little over a year ago and realised it was easy to put it on TH-cam as I couldn’t send it any other way. Since then Ive been inspired by so many other people who are doing what they do but it’s been a bit of tight rope to really do what feels right for me. Ive no interest in doing videos really often, I value my time out there alone far too much and when the camera is with me it’s just so different. Anyway….I’m glad I did it and I’ll find my way I’m sure with a balance of how I want to do it! I totally agree though - I feel I connect more with a video when I get a sense of the person. It just wasn’t something I wanted to do before now. However in recent months I’ve realised that TH-cam offers another form of connection and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the community of likeminded people. I don’t do any other social media at all so I’m a slow learner in trying to find my place in it!
      It’s such a beautiful book isn’t it!! A fantastic resource - beautiful images throughout! A national treasure!! 😉 Thanks agin 👍

Delighted to hear you’re a fan of the Irish Peaks book too! What a project that would be to do them all…the picture of Slieve Snacht is the one that has grabbed me most and I was planning to do a video on that one when I get back to Donegal. I just got a notion of doing a video at the last minute when planning a walk in Wicklow on Sunday and decided to see what routes were given for Wicklow. I felt like I’d done videos on variations of the other Wicklow walks so Djouce it was! Get publishing your Drone footage!! • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Garrett! I consider myself a beginner too in fairness. I’m not sure how much of a beginner you are and whether you are able to navigate with a map to create or follow a route? I did a Mountain Skills course Levels 1 and 2 and that really opened up the mountains to me by learning how to navigate with a map and compass. I was completely new to hiking, I had no experience but I wanted to go out in a tent and wildcamp and something prompted to learn how to read a map. I did a Mountain Skills course of which there are plenty all around the country - this opened up the whole country for me! I knew I didn’t want to join a walking club so I needed to learn some basics (I’m not completely antisocial, but I knew I wanted to head out alone 😉) Since then, I’ve developed a love for hiking but my first love is wild camping! I also use an App called ViewRanger which is fantastic and people upload routes for others to use. Using this app you literally follow a line and can see where you are at all times and know whether you are going off track. When I go somewhere I’m not familiar with I always use ViewRanger and a paper map - I like looking at maps!! For the Maumturks - I can send you a link to the route I used if that would be helpful? I think a common route is to aim to Mam Ean Carpark and you can access the higher ground from there. An amazing spot! If you are already familiar with navigating - let me know and I’ll send you the route that I used!! Thanks for watching the video 👍
