What a great group of performers. Many of whom are never talked about anymore. Bob Burns, The Arkansas Traveler, no less and that bazooka of his. WOW .
That's Roy Rogers 0:34 - "never roped a steer 'cause I don't know how". He's so young. Little did he know what fame awaited him. That's Bob Nolan who comes up after Roy, from Sons of the Pioneers. Wikipedia "composer of numerous Country music and Western music songs, including the standards "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds."
Leonid Kinskey (the bartender from "Casablanca") at 1:27. My mom's repertoire of novelty tunes included this one, "Ragtime Cowboy Joe", "I Didn't Know The Gun Was Loaded" and many others. Today was her birthday.
All of those great stars! Love Leonid Kinskey, who played Sascha, the bartender in Rick's Cafe Americain in ''Casablanca." This is a gem. Thank you for posting, nicoley133. You've made my day.
Came here for the bazooka! Internet vagabonding brought me here. I somehow started reading about some space exploration news (don't recall why), migrated to the Hayabusa2 asteroid mission, that included mention of a shape charge explosive to kick up a soil sample. I then accidentally mouse-rolled over the words "shape charge" and an image popped up to catch my attention. I visited Wikipedia for Shape Charge after which I came across mention of the bazooka. That entry took me to other notes about the term, bringing me to the truly unique instrument created by comedian Bob Burns, which he plays in this song. BTW, the notes are not controlled by the length of this instrument. That is done with the lips. The *quality* of the notes changes with a change in length, so you change the type of sound by using the slide.

"I spend all my time at the hotel bar / with the plantar's punch and a big cigar / and even my horse is a movie star, yippee yi yo kay hay" -- yup, capturing America as it had become at one point. Back in the day when Dan Hicks And His Hot Licks had two female singers, they recorded a version of this song where the two women hit one of the most absolutely perfectly blue notes I have ever heard on the word "band" in the line "and I come to town / just to hear the band". If you can find that version of this song, check out how they blues that phrase in this great, great American classic.
The ill-fated Frances Farmer is the pretty blonde in the background She said this was one of the films she really enjoyed making...Seeing these song/gagsters cutting up you can well understand the fun they had on the set...
After watching the movie 'Die Hard', I tried to remind friends that its 'yippie yi yo kayah' NOT 'Yippie yo kayah' as Bruce Willis spoke it in the movie. Of course no one was interested in my picky criticism - but I was, dang it. I really don't care (much) that Willis' line was wrong and really, what does it matter ? Well to me it did and now, finally, after all these years I have been vindicated !! My real problem was that I could not remember where I knew the line from (prior to watching 'Die Hard') although I suspected it was from a Saturday morning viewing of one of my favorite TV shows starring Roy and Dale Evans back when I was just a little kid. Bing Crosby, Roy Rogers, and Louis Prima singing a cowboy song. That's awesome.
And let's not forget Martha Raye!
Francesca yes! She was a national treasure!
Absolutely love seeing good footage of Louis prima
And Hollywood's second favorite Russian -- Leonid Kinskey! (Familiar from DUCK SOUP, CASABLANCA, BALL OF FIRE...)
Darn Skippy !!!

Bing Crosby, Louis Prima, Roy Rogers & The Sons of the Pioneers and one of the best 'drunk' scenes I've ever seen, courtesy of Martha Raye!
*Yeah...the 'Big Mouth' was quite something, all the way to her sad end*
I just found this jewel!! Music doesn't get any better than this. I don't know that I've ever seen Roy and Bing together. Great music is timeless.
That's Roy Rogers 0:34 - "never roped a steer 'cause I don't know how". He's so young. Little did he know what fame awaited him. That's Bob Nolan who comes up after Roy, from Sons of the Pioneers. So much of the music from that period is wonderful. Bing, Louie, Roy and Bob Nolan. I love this video!!!
That captured a slice of history, including Crosby's reluctant dance!
Wow that was amazing, can't stop grinning
Playing this for my 2 year Granddaughter Berkeley she just got a negative test for covid 19. Yippie

Good job to Mr. Mercer for writing this masterpiece

Yee-haw! Doin' this song tonight at the gig in San Marcos, Texas.
I feel really old, I came here because I remembered this song from an I Love Lucy episode.

I've seen part of this on the Johnny Mercer documentary but this whole thing is super! Louis Prima and Roy Rogers!!!!
Great video. Haven't saw this movie since I was a child.
The curly headed guy wearing chaps is Leonid Kinskey. He went on to play Sasha the bartender in Casablanca.

Agreed

No, you really don't. I can remember a time when we didn't have air conditioning. REALLY unpleasant.
Not "Real America'. But it was Real Americana.

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
But my legs ain't bowed and my cheeks ain't tan
I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow
Never roped a steer 'cause I don't know how
Sure ain't a fixing to start in now
Oh, yippie yi yo kayah, yippie yi yo kayah
I'm an old cowhand and I come down from the Rio Grande
And I learned to ride, ride, ride 'fore I learned to stand
I'm a riding fool who is up to date
I know every trail in the Lone Star State
'Cause I ride the range in a Ford V 8
Oh, yippie yi yo kayah, yippie yi yo kayah
Yippie yi yo kayah, yippie yi yo kayah
We're old cowhands from the Rio Grande
And we come to town just to hear the band
We know all the songs that the cowboys know
'Bout the big corral where the doggies go
We learned them all on the radio
Yippie yi yo kayah, yippie yi yo kayah
I'm an old cowhand
(Oh yes, Mr. Bing)
(Too hot for you, Uncle Fudd)
Down from the Rio Grande
Oh where the west is wild all around the borderland
Where the buffalo roam around the zoo
And the Injuns run up a rug or two
And the old Bar X is just a barbecue, yeah
Yippie yi yo kayah, yippie yi yo kayah
I'm a pioneer who began from scratch
I don't bat an eye in a shootin' match
They don't call me Elmer, they call me Satch
Yippie yi yo kayah, yippie yi yo kayah
Get along little horsy
Get along little horsy
Yippie yi yo kayah, oh
Great song written by Johnny Mercer. Bing does it right.
It's an interesting group! Glad you got to see it. :)
I never realized how cute Martha Raye was!
Louis Prima young. What a surprise, what a man.

Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
I'm an old cowhand
from the Rio Grande
And I come to town
just to hear the band
I'm a cowboy who
never seed a cow
Never roped a steer
'cause I don't know how
And I sure ain't fixin'
to startin' now
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
He's an old cowhand
from the Rio Grande
But he'd rather be
in a good swing band
They fed me hot tamales
the day I was born
I been red-hot
ever since that morn
When I start to cool
I just grab my horn
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
He's an old cowhand
from the Rio Grande
Where the West is wild
round the borderland
Where the buffalo
roam around the zoo
And the Injuns run up
a rug or two
The old Bar X
is a barbecue, Whoa
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Oh, yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
He's an old cowhand

And I ride the range
in a Ford V-
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
He's an old cowhand
from the Rio Grande
And he done retired
livin' off the land
I spend all my time
at the hotel bar
With a planter's punch
and a big cigar
'Cause my old ranch horse
is a movie star
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Oh, yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
She's an old cowgal
Just a regular pal
They don't call me Emma
They just call me Al
We're so gosh-darn horsey
around our way
We don't say howdy
We just say"hay"
We don't answer
We all just neigh
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
I'm just an old cowhand
Down from the Rio Grande
Oh, yeah, man
And I can round up herd
Just to beat the band
Oh, tell me
Now I'm a "pie-on-ear"
Who began from scratch
I don't bat an eye
in a shootin' match
I'll be foreman soon
if my plans all hatch
Oh, yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
They're old cowhands
from the Rio Grande
And we sing duet
in the cowboy band
You should hear us
a-make-a with a hi-de-ho
You should hear us make with below,
below Below, below
And both join in
with a ho-ho-ho
Yippee-o
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Ho-ho-ho
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
Yippee-aye-o-ki-ay
