So Godspeed Alex, maybe these scuds will have a place next to baby brine without the hassle. If I remember correctly goliad farms uses a ton of scuds to feed their fish, so there’s at least farm using them.

    I have been waiting for a project like this, I am not surprised that there is a store bought solution but am far more interested in your holistic solution and approach. I’d be interested to see any and all food source selective breeding projects, I’m fascinated by this idea. Make special scuds for your colorful fish!

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Welllll I've been looking for daphnia and cyclopse color morphs ( just for fun originally) but now I am on the hunt for any live cultures that can harness any of the color enhancing or high protein/omega fatty acid amounts that can survive in the aquarium along size our fish

  • @estherabrams7274
    @estherabrams7274 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    Alex, expand your thinking! SCUDS ARE NOT JUST FOOD!! They are food, and they are good food, but people are keeping scuds as fun things to observe already. They can live in very small spaces and they’re nearly indestructible. A colony in an aquarium’s substrate is a long-term food supply, and fun to watch. AND, if people enjoy watching muddy-colour scuds, how much more will they enjoy brightly colored ones? Search up “scud aquarium” or “aquarium for scuds” here on TH-cam to see what I mean.
    So what I mean to say is, for food or not, there is definitely a market for specialized colors of scuds. I’m interested in blue freshwater creatures, and I have seen natural morphs towards periwinkle and blue in my scud population, but I don’t have tanks to spare for breeding them.
    Living spaces are getting smaller and more expensive, and the percentage of earth’s human population that lives in cities is growing fast. The future of aquaria is in ever smaller creatures. (There’s also a certain segment of us that have always been fascinated with miniatures). Please continue and expand this project, and consider selling your color morphs online. Same for anyone else reading this.
    Yes, I know that an uncontrolled scud population can utterly destroy a container full of expensive plants, been there, done that! Control, however, is as easy as one fish. My CPDs can’t fit an adult scud in their mouths, but by hunting the babies, they’ve totally controlled the population I had.
    It’s also possible that scuds could be used to process a nutrient-dense plant substrate, but that’s probably already being done more efficiently in factories.

    Honestly, I dont know why you'd give up. Live foods are the best thing for fish. Having live foods that could possibly increase the color of fish is, in itself, worthwhile. Having a live food source that is also "attractive" in the aquarium is a bonus.
    I think "red" scuds would be fantastic. Solely for the average aquarist. Adding a beneficial "layer" to the food web. As well as the biological diversity in an aquarium.
    I really think this is a win on all fronts. I wouldn't abandon this project, were i in your shoes. Thats just my thoughts and opinion. You do you, though.

      Well I still have them together and all, but as a project for a video... it kinda deflated my excitement when I thought about it all from the end prospective lol.... but I agree with you, I still think it's a quirky strange thing to do, and over all it is a net possitive for the reasons you outlined.
      Thanks for your encouragement!

      @Fishtory nah, man. Dont get dragged down because a product can be bought. Do what you enjoy, and bring about "cherry" scuds for everyone's aquariums. I mean he'll, I can go to the store and buy bananas pretty cheap. I still like to grow them for myself.
      As a side thought. Are azteca any more colorful than pulex? Perhaps hybridization for better color, or other morphs....

    Ooh! So excited to see someone line breeding amphipods!
    I've been keeping an unidentified crangonyx species (courtesy of the ditch around the corner) that has a wide color variety. The dominant wild morph is blue but their colors vary in hue and shade and remind me of mixed/wild-type neocaridina. They also have the variable egg color like neos. I'm hoping the variety is genetic.
    I want to try properly line breeding them, but I'm not well versed in keeping many small aquatic cultures.

    Very cool video. Culturing live food is sonething I'm really interested in. I used to work at a Pond store with a bunch of koi and one guy told me none of the really professional koi breeders feed their fish the color enhancing food because it "blows their colors out" and apparently makes them dull eventually. No idea if that is true or not but he had a 40,000 gallon pond and some of the most beautiful koi I've ever seen so maybe there is truth in that

First it got gross, then it dried out into a crispy wafer at the bottom. I snapped off a chip and threw it in the scud culture and they were on it like flies on a cow pat.
