    You are a very talented and generous person! Although I would surely enjoy a video on the making of this router lift, I can live without it. Thanks again for sharing your clever solutions.

    Elegantly simple, I have looked at quite a few DIY router lifts online, IMHO this is the best so far.

    By far the least complicated router lift I've seen explained for my plunge router. Thanks for your video. I'd better get started on my build.

    I love it. I have a plunge router and I've seen one video using the screw thread but it's a bit slow to wind up and down. I like the bit extension. I had wrestling with 2 spanners all the time. I will definitely use your lift. Thanks.

    I liked your solutions. I really like that you showed all the step by step ways to navigate around on you tube. I'm about to retire and will be setting up my shop....things like your router lift will help me redo and improve the current version I built. I'd like to see a build video if you get enough interest. You're no newbie in my book. Thanks

By the way really inspiring work, I am a retired mechanical engineer who has taken up wood working as a hobby and your videos are great for ideas, keep up the good work. Warm Regards Normski (UK)

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Bob. But I'll bet you did a better job at that than I would. Those are the kinds of things I'm terrible at. Boxes with square joints, and vague dimensions? That I can handle. Cutting tile to specific dimensions? Only if I could waste one for every one I laid. 😛

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker dont tell anyone but my wife is a mechanical engineer. Shes the gile person. I'm the wood transition piece guy. I made my first 15 degree cut and hours of deciding rabbit bit or tablesaw..lol

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobnicholas5994 That's so cool! My wife is way smarter than me in some things, and I don't mind admitting it. BTW, I assume you meant she's the "tile" person, and not "gile", or better yet "guile". 😛
      As for taking hours deciding which to do, I am *so* right there with you. That's exactly what I do, and in fact, I just realized this morning that it's a benefit (at least for me). If I give myself enough time to think about how to do something, sometimes even days, eventually I latch onto something I never would have thought of before. My mind is like an old Intel 286 processor, and it just takes a while to get there.
      Oh, and regarding me being precise, it's because I made every single one of the errors I caution about. Who knew that my inability to do things right the first, second, or third time would turn into something useful? Seriously!

    • @bobnicholas5994
      @bobnicholas5994 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheNewbieWoodworker I obviously love you tube and I have found my favorite contributors are people who show or discuss mistakes they've made. I have been making elaborate picture frames and I thought I was the only one who couldn't get a corner matched up..

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobnicholas5994 Yeah, isn't it interesting that some people make it look like they never make a mistake? I don't know whether it's intentional or not, but the more I get a look "behind the scenes", the more I realize that some of these things *are* hard, but we figure they make it look so easy, it must just be us who's lacking, and we start devaluing our abilities.
      If I can ever figure out how to word this, I'll certainly blog about it, and if I can figure out how to shoot it, I'll do a video. We're doing things most people either can't or don't. That's pretty awesome, if you think about it.
      (Pardon my rambling, but I want to get this out while I'm thinking about it.) Why do you think there's so many jigs and specialty tools on the market? Because there's things that are hard for a lot of people - hard enough that they'll buy a tool for it.
      Anyway, enough rambling. 🙄😄

    Hi Newbie Woodworker, I love watching all of your videos. You explain everything so well. I can’t wait to watch you make this video from scratch. I am just a little confused about the raising arm and the ball bearing and how the 2 can raise the router so high. Another great video!!

    Great design! I am researching linear motors for another project and this would be the perfect project for a linear motor. Install it under your lift with a 12v power supply and a switch and you could eliminate the lever. These motors are cheap on eBay. Something to consider to enhance your lift. Count me in for a build video! Nice work and I like your videos!

      Ha ha ha does remind me as well of brillo pads, but you are right brillo is just short for brilliant, which is what this build is so well done, and good luck with the throat. Try gargling with salt water, but don't swallow it as you will end up with your head down the loo, or you could just gargle with some mouth wash, take care.

    Now That Is one Clever Lever Dan, and the use of the magnets really stuck with me. I wish you had built this years ago.
    I made the John Heisz Router lift about 4 years ago and it has served me well, in fact i will be using it in few minutes.
    The build article: ibuildit.ca/projects/precision-router-lift/ Plans for this: ibuildit.ca/plans/precision-router-lift/
    Yours is a much simpler concept thou and I might still build yours because I could use two router tables set up at one time and I have the room for it. So yes I think you need to start on that build video.
    Great Job.

      The Newbie Woodworker Hi Dan, enjoyed the video as usual! Your worldview shines through. Curious about dust collection.
      Why pull dust from top to bottom?
      Doesn’t the router motor assembly get clogged?
      What prevents the hole at the top from working? When you tried the hole at the top:-
      Did you have a path for clean air to come up from the the bottom and carry the dust into the collector?
      Keep up the good work!

    A construction video would be greatly helpful and appreciated. I'm still relatively green with a lot of this and wonder why use a plunge router. Wouldn't a fixed router work as well? Great video!!

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, and great question. Yes, you absolutely can use this idea with a fixed router. I may try to do a video explaining how. I used a plunge router, because of the problem I mentioned briefly in the video - my plunge router tilts a little when you tighten the clamp. So it's kind of useless as a plunge router, but it still runs great. So I figured I'd stick it in the table. 😄

    • @edwardchampion10
      @edwardchampion10 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Newbie Woodworker Lol!! Excellent reasoning. Any thoughts on variations using a fixed router would be appreciated as I have a an older model Craftsman router I don’t use.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't think it would be *too* difficult to accommodate. Instead of having a carriage "top" like mine, have a carriage "back" instead, and attach your router to that.

      @@canario430 Ah, I see what you mean. I actually tried that method first. I could never get the router to stay level as I raised it. Each partial turn of the rod caused the bit to lean a little in one direction or the other. But I have to say that although I can see how the rod would be nice, I've been thrilled with my lever lift. Great design and video, Dan! Simple but very effective. Sometimes the smartest designs are the simplest. They look easy but take a lot of thought to get them to that point.
    I'm curious, why don't you sell your plans? I havent looked at your other plans but this is certainly worth $10 to $15.

      Thanks. I don't have a website set up to sell plans, and frankly, there's so many options to choose from, I don't even know where to start. Which is embarrassing, because I'm actually a developer, but I only dabbled in web development. If you have some suggestions, please let me know. I’m concerned about having to completely unassemble it if you find it needs some adjustment in relation to the table. There has to be a better way to add adjustment screws to the lift without removing the whole thing again.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually don't have to remove the lift, to add tape. I put that metal rod into the extension, then unscrew the lift. It drops down far enough to be able to get some tape in there. and I hold it steady with the rod. But I only ever had to do it once, and it's never changed, even though I've removed and replaced the lift dozens of times.

    • @Andy-te6jj
      @Andy-te6jj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      instead of using tape I would put pieces of Paper between so you no need always to unscrew the lift just loosen the bolts a little bit

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, but the problem with that is that the paper falls out when and if you ever have to detach the router. With tape, that's not a problem. That doesn't mean your idea isn't a good one, though - just that I'm absent-minded, so either I'd forget where to put the paper, or I'd forget the paper altogether! 😛

    • @Andy-te6jj
      @Andy-te6jj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure you right but I assume if you detach the Router you probably use it as a "Hand Router" so then you need to peel the tape up anyways 😉 but whatever you give an idea for my next Project 😛

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I don't use it as a hand router. It has a flaw, where it tilts slightly when I clamp the plunge down, so it lives its life in the table now. 😛
