  • Thyme is a wonderful herb to use for cooking and soooo hardy too! I will show you how to dry your thyme for storage. I will also share with you why it is a wonderful plant to grow for bees. The plant is easily 3 years old and ready for regular harvesting.

    The wild bunnies dug my thyme up and nested under it. Humph. Now I need to start it over. Great video.

    Thanks Donna. At our house we like basil, and rosemary as our 2 favorite herbs. I hang mine in the garage. as they tend to not make it over the winter I hang them with the root attached. Thanks again

    Nice harvest! I love thyme and recently I am making another attempt at growing them despite being a bad gardener. This time I'm doing it in a planter instead of the ground. Hopefully my thyme gets as bountiful as yours.

    Wow you have a lot of thyme! Homegrown herbs are the best, thrifty too! My thyme didn't make it through our unusually cold winter. Great tips Donna!

    Love the tip on using the food saver, I’ve never used that feature on ours but how handy! How long do you think the dehydrated herbs will last if stored in jars without sucking the air out?

    Thank you...this is so helpful! I've had issues with my thyme plant (I'm new to growing herbs) and I had a feeling it was because of the way I was harvesting it (my first plant died off...or at least appeared dead). I was just cutting a bit off the top instead of cutting low. I'm going to try cutting low and see if that makes a difference. My other herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary) are all doing well. You've got a new subscriber here!

    Hey Donna! You have a nice bunch of thyme. I have lemon thyme and mines have the buds so I shouldn't cut it now? I like to wash all my herbs too but someone told me it takes the flavor away, oh well. Good video!

    Great video, thank you so much... My Lemon Thyme was already bloomed (Received for my birthday) in this early spring, but I just trimmed the plant & small bit to where I can't hang it, so should I just put in a cut paper bag in a cool dark place to dry? Then take all off of the short stems please? Anyone know as I'm new to this, but trying, smiles... 😘 🌹🌈💞🎵🌷🌺🌸😆👏👍💫🌟💛 ☘️

      Hi Venita,
      I grow a lot opf rosemary. I do not have a video on it yet, but I just snip it off whnever I need it. It lived year round for me when I lived in Florida. It is frost sensitive where I live now so I have to grow it indoors. Here is my recipe playlist:th-cam.com/video/4ojaAlh2KYw/w-d-xo.html

    After reading how hard it is from growing it from seed, if I manage to do it, will it flower in its first season?
    Helping the pollinators is my priority over using thyme for cooking!

    I'm curious to know why you stored the reminder of the Thyme in the mason jar instead of de-stemming it?
    Is there a benefit ? Thanks

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +McCardie Clan I would normally destem it, but it is easier for me to put it all in the jar. I also think it retains more flavor leaving it on the stem. I destem it when I transfer it to smaller jars. If you have time, just go ahead and take it off the stems. :) I do not think there is a huge difference in flavor, provided you plan on using it within the year.

    • @mccardieclan1755
      @mccardieclan1755 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I really wanted to know if it made a difference in the flavor or not cause I usually de-stem all of the herbs but I do not crush the leaves till I use them. I try to maintain as much flavor as possible, if you know what I mean.
      Thank You for taking the time to answer my question~ blessings

    What happens if you live in a place that has winters? I'm in New York, do I need to bring the thyme plant inside from the garden during the winters or leave it in the ground and it will regrow in the spring?

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Mine survives the winter, but I am not as far north as you. Some thyme plants cannot survive extremely cold winters. I suggest looking up the variety of thyme you are growing and then check to see if it is hardy in your zone. I am in zone 6b. You can find your zone on the Farmer's Almanac website.

    • @joeyoliver579
      @joeyoliver579 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Add a heavy layer (at least 3") of shredded mulch around the herb(s) and they will over-winter just fine

  • @ShannyShanLV
    @ShannyShanLV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just got lemon thyme yesterday but I was just trying to save a few dollars by picking the smaller of the two plants. Have you tried varieties of thyme flavoring.. Or would you say that its a waste of money to purchase genetically altered herbs?

    • @RainbowGardens
      @RainbowGardens  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cross breeding of plants happens naturally in nature. Varieties are always changing, many times for the better. I love Lemon Thyme and use it in many recipes. You can search my channel under the playlist tab to check them out., However, I do not prefer lavender thyme, it has a soapy flavor.
