same! it's one of those things you can do at home and now there's all that extra time for it so i've gotten really invested in it. started 2 weeks ago and i got now basil, thyme and dill sprouts on my windowsill. love to take care of them and watch them grow.
yeah! I have a salad greens and herbs container garden going in various containers and pots on my apartment patio right now. It's nice to have something that isn't high effort but gives me something useful to do
I just planted my herb garden, you were my inspiration, haven't grew anything in 20years plus, I planted rosemary, basil, oregano, cilantro, 2 different parsley, stevia and a couple tomato, sweet peppers and a patio baby eggplant. I love it, been wanting to but been to busy/lazy, but I'm living a healthier lifestyle and love to eat/cook healthy, it is such a feeling of accomplishment growing some of your own food and seeing its beauty at the same time, Thanks Gary, keep the awesome video's coming
I have heard it said, do not know from personal experience, that peppers, tomatoes and eggplant should not be planted closed together or they will not produce well. Growing eggplant was great fun, waiting for the fruit to get big enough to pick.
Glad I found you. What Iove about your videos is that you get right to it. It's painful with too many others when you have to watch someone just stand there and explain things while not moving along. Just do it while your talking! And you pack a lot of info in the time allotted, which I appreciate. It keeps me focused and I end up watching the entire thing without having to fast forward through the nonsense. Thanks for passing on your wisdom!
That's exactly what I *LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE* about allllllllllllll of his videos!!!!! Majorly inspiring. Now, if I can just get companion planting down...lol I need to binge his videos again. lol
I have Basil and mints in the ground and Basil in my pot. I have never had luck with Cilantro it always died on me in a pot. Now I know what I did wrong I got cheap and used ground soil and I didn't know then I needed to add fertilizer nor how offen I need to water it. TH-cam wasn't a thing for me then until now. I learned so much from everyone on TH-cam. My plants are looking great, finally! Lol. Thank you so much! Very helpful video. Will try this...can't wait!
You make it look so easy. I feel like I need a pencil and paper to take notes. You pair them so well and handle them with confidence. I started a bunch from seed but wish I watched your vid before -- this is a great resource for backyard gardeners. Thanks!

I'm using a journal. I write down everything that went right and wrong. If it went wrong I write what I can do next time. For instance: don't grow basil in only 2 inches of soil lol
Stumbled on your channel and I have to say, wow!! You clearly have a TON of knowledge and you know how to pack it all into a video in an EASY and CLEAR way to understand, even for beginners. That’s an art! I appreciate you putting all of these videos out. It’s helped me tremendously!!

I'm late to the party but what a beautiful container garden! I recently started some basil, rosemary, lavender, cilantro, parsley and chives. I started them all from seed and they're doing wonderful! I have them all in separate pots about 12 inches deep and 11.5 inches wide. I live in Ontario Canada so we get cold weather here, I plan on bringing the pots indoors come winter with a UV light on them and hope they last forever!
Watching your videos after putting my kids to bed is the best kind of meditation and inspiration. I can't wait for tomorrow to start so that I can keep working on my garden.

I started about 15 weeks ago. Small back patio and all in containers. My goal was to provide some veggies that we buy. I’ve been semi productive. Herbs are doing well. I’ve mint, Basil, and Rosemary (Dont judge, it was there). I saw this vid. Im in south FLORIDA and can probably grow most time. I really appreciate how you are to the point. You explain and show examples of real life planting, without the fluff. Thx!!
You can do it. Good luck Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

LOVE chocolate mint! Instead of having a sweet when I'm in the mood for chocolate I have chocolate mint tea instead. Sooo good❤❤❤ Yes in a pot only overgrows every year comes back even in Michigan zone 6b. I put mulch on top year round. When it starts getting cooler I put extra mulch to keep the plant warm through winter. I've had the same chocolate mint plant for about 5 years now. If u haven't tried chocolate mint u gotta try it!!❤
This is the 4th video I found, and it is the best beginner tutorial for me to know how to get started building my herb garden for the 1st time. Really appreciate it!!

Just recently decided to try some herb gardening for my cooking, and as a mom/daughter thing with my youngest. I loved this video as a beginnner! It was simple but informative. Thanks so much for making it easy to understand for us newbies! I look forward to starting some planting!
I wasnt aware that herbs could be perennial, I thought my parsley was just a freak of nature. Left outside during this past winter it never died down to the roots! It stayed green all winter long. Granted it didnt grow much, and the leaves stayed curled and bunched. But just in the last week with a bit of watering and the centers have already shot up with new growth! I'm so impressed I talk to it almost everyday with encouraging words and feel good touches [like with all my plants] I swear it works
You must’ve heard me say earlier today at the plant store “I wonder which herbs grow best with what...” 🤔🤔🤔 This video is RIGHT ON TIME!!! Thanks sooooo much!

Great update. I decided to buy a new raised bed and put all mine in a raised bed (minus Mint) I use to try Cilantro but I am down here in zone 8b in Georgia. It bolts within a month and I felt like I was wasting money and thyme (I see what I did there) . My Rosemary is 2 years old, my original thyme and oregano about 5 years old. My sage seems to live a couple of years and just dies. A video idea (if you haven't done one) is pruning back older perennial herbs. My german thyme and oregano are old and woody (partially my fault for ignoring them since they often never need attention)
Thank you for your video. Lots of plants that are considered "indestructible" are not at all indestructible when they're grown in arid zone 9a/9b. I have had the worst time trying to grow mint. They last until the heat gets into the high 90s/100s. Then it becomes a matter of trying to save them from dying until the weather gets cooler. The one mint plant that survived and looked like it was dead, is so/so now. I'm not sure it's going to make it. I've managed to save one oregano plant and one basil plant by giving them crazy amounts of shade and watering them several times a day in late spring and through summer (and overwintering in a mini greenhouse). Growing indoors is not much better because I don't have central heating or cooling. But it's nice to see which plants go together. I'm going to try again this year.

I have to agree 100% with your assessment of mints being uncooperative to grow from seed. I thought I was doing something wrong, but my dill and thyme are doing just fine. Also no luck with oregano or parsley from seed; plan to buy some transplants this coming weekend.
Great video!! Love all the plants on your deck...I’ve had to replant so many seeds this year bc of a pesky raccoon in the neighborhood. But it never stops me from redoing my work. I really want to try some potatoes in buckets next year.

Gary, I've always liked your videos, but I have to say that you crowd the heck out of your herbs. Oregano, for instance, can grow very bushy and tall enough to shade out some other herbs, with enormous roots as big as a healthy tomato's roots. Additionally, once let flower, they are great for feeding and attracting bees. So I'd much prefer a huge healthy oregano plant in a big bucket or in the ground or a raised planter than one crowded into a small, shallow planter with two other herbs. I think there will be less chance for disease to spread and really take hold when large plants aren't crowded into such small spaces, too.
Thanks. They actually do really well and flower up. The key I found is dont over water them. They like dry conditions. Nice, concise and great info. Like your style. Hope there are a bunch more videos to see. ( I mean really,,,does it take 18 min on how to grow oregano??) You take the KISS method and make it fun. Thanks
Great video as always Gary. My first plant was oregano, and I made the mistake not planting it a separate container , it grew so violent in my garden that it spreed to around 10 m2 in 3 seasons. 😁 At the end I got mad and dug up the whole 10 m2 soil. So long lasting herbs in separate containers.
Hello Gary, great video. You said it is hard to plant mint from seed. In that case I hope mine sprout because I planted some on the 20th of April. Love your videos and I learn alot from you

I always thought potted herbs needed small stones, or rocks in the bottom for drainage, even if you have a pot with holes. Have I been planting herbs and other plants incorrectly all these years? First-time viewer. Love your video. For me, it’s been a tough year on my herbs. I think it’s me and not the heat. Thank you!
As long as it drains not really. But Thyme, oregano, rosemary, like drier feet. So extra prep won't hurt. Get your fall garden supplies! Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden shop for seeds, seed starting supplies, neem oil, TRG merchandise and more at www.therustedgarden.com

@THERUSTEDGARDEN
since the covid 19 apocolypse is nearly upon us, im starting to grow more and more. It's also quite therapeutic to be gardening.
same! it's one of those things you can do at home and now there's all that extra time for it so i've gotten really invested in it. started 2 weeks ago and i got now basil, thyme and dill sprouts on my windowsill. love to take care of them and watch them grow.
Man it really is. There's something peaceful about it
yeah! I have a salad greens and herbs container garden going in various containers and pots on my apartment patio right now. It's nice to have something that isn't high effort but gives me something useful to do
@@PunsandPixels Those are plastic window boxes. Available at every garden centre.
I agree
I just planted my herb garden, you were my inspiration, haven't grew anything in 20years plus, I planted rosemary, basil, oregano, cilantro, 2 different parsley, stevia and a couple tomato, sweet peppers and a patio baby eggplant. I love it, been wanting to but been to busy/lazy, but I'm living a healthier lifestyle and love to eat/cook healthy, it is such a feeling of accomplishment growing some of your own food and seeing its beauty at the same time,
Thanks Gary, keep the awesome video's coming
OH that is awesome. Glad you are planting. Now that you are started I bet it takes off. Good luck!
I have heard it said, do not know from personal experience, that peppers, tomatoes and eggplant should not be planted closed together or they will not produce well. Growing eggplant was great fun, waiting for the fruit to get big enough to pick.
Amazing and 👌 👌 that's pretty good
Glad I found you.
That's my goal. Say what I am going to show and show it and make it clear. Thanks.
Fully agree, thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Amen!
That's exactly what I *LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE* about allllllllllllll of his videos!!!!! Majorly inspiring. Now, if I can just get companion planting down...lol I need to binge his videos again. lol
@@lisaruiz149 Yes! I am in need of a binge refresher course as well. Happy and healthy herbage!
Thanks!
Glad to help. Just do what your are doing and your skills take off.

Watching this video was a quarter of an hour enjoybably spent in UK. I am trying to encourage the bees (which encourage me!)Thank you sir.

Thx!!
I’m so glad I found a fellow Marylander that teaches gardening! You’re awesome!

I'm so impressed
I talk to it almost everyday with encouraging words and feel good touches [like with all my plants]
I swear it works
I bet it does work
You must’ve heard me say earlier today at the plant store “I wonder which herbs grow best with what...” 🤔🤔🤔
This video is RIGHT ON TIME!!! Thanks sooooo much!

oh wow! my local Home Depot sells those herbs for $.99 I am forced to do container gardening since I rent so these videos are a blessing to me! Thank u Gary!
That is so cheap.
Gary Pilarchik - usually everything on the island is more expensive than stateside, but apparently not these herbs. I'm surprised.
Brooklyngirl In The Caribbean Same I was wondering. Here in Home Depot Mexico I can get oregano, thyme, rosemary, etc on 4” for $17.5 ($0.90 USD) and 6” for a little over a dollar!
Totally jealous; where I live even small herb pots cost 3-4 dollars.
All your videos are so rewatchable.

I actually cut them to the ground. Ill put it on my vid list.
I'm going to try again this year.
what a beautiful singing birds around your garden.i always notice amazing sound of birds around your garden.can you please make a video on how to attrack pollinator s and birds in garden
Ill cover it when I do a tour.
It’s spring in Australia now and I just bought some herbs 2 days ago . This video has informative details
Very glad to help. Good luck.

Oh yeah they do that. Great plants!
Can you possibly advise me about growing thyme in very hot and humid North Central Florida? (Zone 9) Should it be in a plastic or a clay pot? And in full sun or part shade? Thank you very much and many blessings 🌱💜🌱

I have to agree 100% with your assessment of mints being uncooperative to grow from seed. I thought I was doing something wrong, but my dill and thyme are doing just fine. Also no luck with oregano or parsley from seed; plan to buy some transplants this coming weekend.
It is so hard and then only 1 germinate. Cuttings or transplants work best.

They like dry conditions.

oh man BIG mistake trying it on a jar next time I need bigger containers like what u got thanks for the info very helpful :-)
It helps when they take off and heat comes.
I’m in zone 5 and mint is sooo easy to grow for me, oregano will not grow at all. I bought fresh thyme in the plastic container that you are suppose to eat, Instead I planted it, it all rooted and is so beautiful! Best 2.99 I ever spent
Wow that's a good deal.

That's how I initially got my mint plant. It works with other herbs as well. And usually much cheaper than what you can get at garden stores.
what about the sun, how much sun do each of these herbs need?
6+ hours

Love your videos Gary! Do you have any tips on keeping squirrels out of your pots? They seem to really love fresh potting soil and can destroy weeks of growing effort in a single morning! Would appreciate any tips you have. TY!

Nice, concise and great info. Like your style. Hope there are a bunch more videos to see. ( I mean really,,,does it take 18 min on how to grow oregano??) You take the KISS method and make it fun. Thanks
Thanks that my goal. I have more video like this this year.
Great video as always Gary.
My first plant was oregano, and I made the mistake not planting it a separate container , it grew so violent in my garden that it spreed to around 10 m2 in 3 seasons. 😁
At the end I got mad and dug up the whole 10 m2 soil.
So long lasting herbs in separate containers.
Yeah I find I could use all it made in the ground. So container are perfect.
Hello Gary, great video. You said it is hard to plant mint from seed. In that case I hope mine sprout because I planted some on the 20th of April. Love your videos and I learn alot from you
Once they take off they are solid but it can be slow starting.

sweet seasonings
The spicy oregano grows a lot bigger. I grew mine with the thyme and it took more space than the thyme.
Good to know. Thanks
I'm Fla and the Oregano are crazy huge growing. I dont even use that much. I love basil to just pick & crunch the leaves to smell.
