Thanks Donna, these are some great tips for someone like me who has zero experience with drying and storing herbs. Really appreciate the time you take in making your excellent videos. Wayne
I love this video you're so calm and collected and talking about mint, and then suddenly the birds start singing and caw-cawing and they're so loud it's hilariously funny😙!
I love mint. My husband gave me mint and basil it has been growing great. Now all I need is lemon balm. I have to come back and check out the recipe. It's 7am and I haven't slept yet Peppers and Strawberries
You can also put a desecant pack in your jar. Like those little packs you find in your shoes or pocketbook, but food grade. Amazon has all different sizes.
Oh, the dehydrators are so nice. I do not use it much, but it is so wonderful when you have many herbs to dry. It is spring and I am busy with not only mint, but parsley, oregano, and thyme. You will enjoy it. :)) Thank you for commenting.
Thanks for sharing this info, my mint is going crazy and I needed a way to deal with it, now I know how to properly save it and propagate it too. Thanks Donna
Thank you for this video, I enjoyed it. My name is Dave I am in the northern mountains of Georgia. I do hope to see many more of your videos. GOD'S JOY.
My mom pulls up the roots every so often when she harvest. It never takes over but boy oh boy if you aren't watching it will take over. It never dies in the yard. You will find a patch somewhere.
That is right. It is important to keep an eye on it. I am glad you reiterated that point. I really like this mint and am actually thinking of letting it spread a bit.
Thank you so much! This is an awesome tutorial, you answered so many of my questions, I'm really excited on all the ways I can get my mints up and growing and thriving :-)
Hi Dona, I'm new at growiing anything but i have this 10 inch pot of mint on my terrace and wondered if I can bring this pot in during winter or would I have to cut it, dry it , and then regrow some
Do you know a good culinary variety of spearmint for salads (as opposed to tea/dehydrated/medicinal use)? I moved into a home recently that has a lot of weedy spearmint, and I trimmed it down and it has a nice flavor but it's very fuzzy/hairy. I tried purchasing a mint that had nice and smooth leaves but it turned out to be peppermint which was WAY too strong for salads. Would a chocolate mint work?
Have you tried drying your mint in your solar oven? 180 degrees. You can dehydrate same as with an electric dehydrator, same temp too. If you have too higher temp turn your oven east to turn your oven down.
To seal the jar are you using a new lid or can an older (cleaned) lid be used to seal the jar? Side note a drone that looked like a bumblebee photo bombed your garden scene.
Sure. It will take a while for it to root down. I should expect to see a new vine/root creep through the top in about 6 to 8 weeks. I will transplant it at that time. I am in the process of doing the same to my oregano right now and it is just about ready. It already has it's new growth, I just need to find it a home.
@@RainbowGardens fast forward to today...how is your mint plants doing oregano etc? Whaat I've learned is instead of keeping a bottle of pepto in the cabinet grow any of the mint plants and make medicinal tinctures ..also extracts for the skin as well as culinary which you already know that lol! Great video! Ty for sharing! Iam in Arizona so Iam going to start mine indoors! Question for you....when it comes to propagating any plant I was told by someone in Tuscon that is a homesteader that when it comes to the cuttings that once it's starting to grow and you start pruning back on the new plant that you can typically only propagate off each cutting on average 4times? I asked him why...he said the plants don't grow as well and aren't as full and vibrant and potent as opposed to original plant....hopefully Iam making sense ....what has your e experience been? Tyia!
Hi! I live in Texas, and it's August now, but I have been able to get a propagated mint plant started in a container, and I've been able to pick a few leaves from it here and there once it got settled and tall. Would I be able to take a cutting from the top of it where there's new growth and grow them both inside during the winter, so they can be ready for next spring?
Hi! Thank you. Yes, you can also propagate basil in the same way. Basil is an annual, so it does not regrow the next year. That being said, you need to take the cutting very early in the life of the basil plant. As the plant matures, it will reach a point where it produces flowers and then seed (called bolting).. If you take the cutting form the plant at that stage, it will also flower early and not grow into a mature plant. Other herbs which are great to propagate which you can enjoy the following year include rosemary and thyme. I will be posting a video on thyme soon. If you are interested in growing herbs, you may appreciate this video.Container Gardening: How to Begin - Pot Selection, Plants, Sun Exposure and More Thanks again. :)))
One more thing about basil, I do not recommend you grow it from a cutting. I always have the best luck growing it from seed. I replant seed every 3 weeks or so so I have it during the warm months.
I have a new mint in my garden. Here is the link. Thanks for all the vids Moose Mint!!! Bruce p.s. I checked and we have 106 frost free days here in Red Deer Alberta.
Gina Haffie Thank you! The string is Jute string and is easy to find at most stores in the US. It is rough and holds the stems well. You can use any string , but nylon is a little more slick and as the herb stems dry, they could slip out.
hi... Thanks for this video. love the tips. One thing I'd like to ask is... when propagating mint and keeping it in a jar of water and waiting for it to root, my mint leaves seemed to withered and dry. is there something I'm doing wrong? and normally, how long does it take for it to root before I transplant it to a container w soil? thanks in advance. 😊
In my village we have mint only for own use and many of them are useless and discard and dried only natural sun dry. Could you pls guide me how I guide my people to get benefit from it. We have other dry vegetables and dry fruits as well.
Hi. I have actually only used the dried mint in meat rubs or blackened seasoning. I usually have fresh mint around somewhere, so I love the fresh over dried, especially in tea. If I make a dried tea blend, I like it with lemongrass & chamomile.
I know right? You may have seen my container garden tours? I only had 1 of 3 return this year. It was such a cold winter. Next year, I will overwinter my containers of mint in my garage. I am enjoying the spearmint, so I want to keep it around. :)))
Hi, I have mint plants and this is the first year that my mint has flourished and lived for many months. I want to protect them as it gets colder but I can't bring them inside because I lack space near any lighted areas. I thought about a mini sheltered greenhouse but I live about 20 feet from the bay and it gets really cold when the wind comes off the wate
Hi Donna !! What brand is your dehydrator and what do you think of it ? I have a very old one that needs replacing but there are so many options now and I have no idea which way to go. What machine did you use to vacuum seal the jar ? We planted 5 new mints this year . . . Including pineapple and banana, which I had not seen before. Can't wait to try them . . . It won't be long now . . .
Wonderful. So many "flavors" of mint aren't there? I think the model of Food Saver I have is V3485. I purchased it at Sam's. If you get a Food Saver, just make sure it has the hose accessory and you will be all set to use the jar attachment. Also, I really love my Excalibur dehydrator. It works like a charm. It is very rare I would use it to dry so little herbs, but I did it this time for the video. I typically pack it full because it does use up quite a bit of electricity. I made sure to purchase a 9 tray versus the 5 tray so when I do dry herbs, I can do many at a time.
Thanks Donna, these are some great tips for someone like me who has zero experience with drying and storing herbs. Really appreciate the time you take in making your excellent videos.

Thank you so much! What a wonderful compliment. I do work hard making the videos. :))))
Great tutorial! I especially liked the wild bumble bee flying around you as you demonstrated your techniques! 🐝 😜 Thank you!
That was priceless...first glance thought it was real!

Funny. :)
My dried mint is never as good as my fresh mint...it tastes...too dry!
Kay Mac Fresh mont is the best but I love dried mint in seasoning mixes. YUM
Thanks, Donna, for another super well-done instructional video! My wife grows mint so I'll make sure she doesn't miss this episode. Great job!
Great! Thank you.
Great demonstration and idea to show people how to do this. Thanks!
I love mint. My husband gave me mint and basil it has been growing great. Now all I need is lemon balm. I have to come back and check out the recipe. It's 7am and I haven't slept yet Peppers and Strawberries

Thank you and I appreciate you letting others know! :)
I have a dehydrator now but garage works just fine. Just started a new file called herbs. Watches and learns...That air sucking machine works awesome!
SavageNorthGarden air sucking machine......that's so funny!
Have a blessed day Donna thanks for sharing
I dried mint last year. I didn't know the trick with the straw. I am going to use that with mine.
Great video! I now have some apple mint stems in water on the kitchen windowsill. Thanks for the tip!

Love You and keep gardening,, lots of love from Washington Court House Ohio,,,, ,,and Happy New Year

***** Mint has a tendency to grow crazy, lol. It is a nice, easy plant to have around. I hear some people have been making mint ice cream with it. :)
Thank you for this video, I enjoyed it.

GOD'S JOY.
More coming your way. Thanks for watching.
My mint in the raised bed has went crazy maybe ill try drying some this year. I love it in tea and I juice it with watermelon, so good and refreshing.
Skgibson8 Mint is so good in tea, fresh or dried. I hope you were able to dry some. :)
Rainbow Gardens yes and I did it right this year. Last I thought it was dry but when I put it it the jar it molded.
Skgibson8 I hope it works for you. Make sure it crumbles apart easily before you store it. :)
Thank you! I will now be growing mint.

Hi Dona,

Mint grows back for me every year where I live. My winters might get as cold as 0°F. It depends on how cod your winters get if it will come back.
Hi, Donna, please suggest me tips on how to grow peppermint from seeds. Thanks for the video already.
Hey could I add a fan to increase the drying?
My mom always said if you cant grow mint.... leave gardening alone....the plants don't deserve it! lol
Chuck
Oh how I needed a laugh tonight! So true! Thank you for stopping by. :))

You sound like my Mom. She's from Hickory, NC. Now were're Texas farmers, lol.
To seal the jar are you using a new lid or can an older (cleaned) lid be used to seal the jar?

Oh I have the same dehydrator
that's convenient

Beautiful! Thanks!
You should have shown the mint plant after pruning!!!
Easiest way to propagate mint, plant it
Ha, true!
my mints have flowers. does this mean that i can't harvest now?
altertheskyy1 Sure, you can go ahead and harvest it. It is best before they flower, but mint tends to have a lot of flavor anytime. :)
This is a great video. Thank you for the info, but can I just say how gorgeous you are😍
Beautiful
