I was unable to open or close my garage door after manually opening it during power outage. Watching this video was very helpful & I was able to have the door working normal again within a few minutes. Thank you!
After watching several videos, with no luck, I came across yours. Your plain and easy video helped me succeed. As a widow, life does not always play fair and I was beginning to become very frustrated trying to Re-engage my garage door. Finally SUCCESS! Thank you!
I found a few TH-cam videos on how to open an close a garage door manually. This is the best. It's clear, easy, and gets right to the point. I needed to open my garage door about halfway, so I could attach a "bumper" to the inside of the door to protect my car's hatch from contacting the door's lift handle. Applying what I learned here made the job a lot easier.
Thanks so much for this video. My Dad passed away last year and I'm struggling with this home owner business. I was locked out due to a power outage and I have ONLY used the garage to enter my home since I've lived here. NOW I KNOW THANKS TO YOU.
OMG!!! Thank you so much. This is the 4 th power outage we’ve had in a month. Had to get my car out of my garage to pick up my dog from daycare. Worked perfectly. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!😊
Thank you so much to share this VDOI. I had big strom and 2 hours rained last night. The first thing in the morning that I found was the remote didn’t work. I unplugged and put it’s back, power off and on nothing happened. My neighbor (Thanks Pat) told me that I can open manually. Search from the YT and found you. Fixed in a minute. Thump up...
Power went out after rain overnight. I have this morning off, so was going to get a haircut. Thinking 'oh no! need to get an uber' Watched this, got it open for peace of mind, then 90 minutes before i needed to leave, the power came back on. Put pin back and tested that everything was in working order. It is, but i know what to do in the future. Thank you 👏
Thank you for this video. As a female prepping for a repair contractor to come out and fix my door, it's a huge relief to know EXACTLY what has gone wrong (broken torsion spring) so I'm able to lead the conversation with the contractor rather than hoping they'll be honest with me (or worry that they're trying to overcharge me).
yeah maybe pay attention next time so your husband doesn't have to show you how to do something a thousand times just to have you ignore him a thousand times.
Thanks! Without this video I would never have figured out how to reconnect the automatic opener after manual operation. It was far from obvious... not just a matter of pulling the string and pin back to its original spot. And there were no instructions on the hardware. My garage door didn't even have the safety lock to lock it from the inside. Oh well, hopefully the odds of someone on the outside trying to open the garage the one time that it's openable, are not high. :)
Power went out so pulled the lever to manually open it then spent 40 minutes trying to figure out how to reconnect it once the power came on...... Fixed it in one go after watching this video! Thank you 🙏 my Father woulda killed me 😢😂🎉
We knew how to manually open the door but didn’t know how to get it back to where it electronically goes open so I came to TH-cam and it took seconds to do. I’m not tall enough to use the cord to get it back up so I used my thumb on the metal piece while pulling on the cord and it worked. Ian made things a big mess so it was nice this was easy to fix
I can always tell when there are storms or hurricanes rolling through the US because this videos spikes in views. Hope your power gets turned back on soon and be safe.
Good video because the guy explains about how the torsion springs actually do most of the lifting of the garage door for you (and the opener) and how if one or both of the springs has an obvious break in it, then it may be Very hard, if not impossible for you to lift the garage door by yourself. However, I think what he showed from 1:34-1:38 in the video can be Very dangerous. In the video, he shows locking the garage door with the manual "safety lock" after you have manually opened your garage door, gotten your vehicle out, and then closed the garage door manually. However, in the narration it Sounds like he said, "I wouldn't use the safety lock..." yet the video shows him doing exactly that! Here's a word of advice and warning to the wise - if you manually lock your garage door with that safety lock, and then try to re-engage the overhead trolley when the power is back on, what do you think is going to happen? Your garage door is still manually locked (notice that the video never says to unlock that safety lock) and the powered-on garage door opener is now going to struggle trying to lift a manually-locked garage door!! Nothing good's going to come out of that. Always remember to manually unlock the safety lock Before re-engaging the overhead trolley!!
You got my like just because you are helping "people with no Logic in their minds". All they need is to look-- Handle , string, handle, string... wallah!!!
I figured this out myself years ago when there was a power outage, but because of what's going on in Texas I want to link this video for those who can't wait fifteen minutes figuring it out themselves in the dark.
Thank you!! Power just went out in the entire neighborhood and for a sec I thought I was stuck in the house. I tried to pull the string but nothing happened. Turns out I wasn’t pulling hard enough.
Lmao you saved me. Out of curiosity I pulled the string and realized it can be opened with bare hands, and could not fix it so I thought I'd be in great trouble 😅
Yeah, tough week(s) for Texas. Hope you guys are safe and if you want additional help figuring out your garage door opener you could jump over to our Facebook Group "Everyday Home Repairs Community" and post your specific issue with pictures and/or video. Thanks!
Usually the garage door has a little lever you can push through the side track to lock the door in place and ensure you can't open the door from the outside when disengaged from the track.
Hey Surteera, jump over to our Facebook group “Everyday Home Repairs Community” then you can post your specific issue. On that community we can share pics and video so it is easier for us to help troubleshoot. 👍

My chain guide broke so that's how I have been opening my door for a week. Guess its time I do a video on the repair. Never ends with house repair does it. LOL
Thanks. Question to anybody that can help. The metal chain is off and hanging because the piece that holds it on top of motor broke. Can I still open it manually without the chain connected? I tried but it doesn't desengage and is extremelly heavy. Please advise.

Solid video, had to sneak my gf into the house didn’t know how to re lock the garage door. Very informative and straightforward
