Igor Krutoy first heard Dimash sing in 2017, and came out of retirement to compose with and for Dimash. At 5 he was accepted into the most distinguished music academy in his country. Now writing his Doctoral thesis for a PhD in Musicology/ Composing, received all his degrees with honors while simultaneously filling arenas and maintaining his performing career, a first! He has a bachelors degree in vocals, a master's degree in composition and is about to complete his PhD in musicology this year.

Dimash and the composer of this song, Igor Krutoy (at the piano), often use archetypes in their music. This epic piece evokes the journey of soul (wandering in ancient times, haunted by memories, and lost loves ) as it finds itself in an expanded state of awareness (new ground, chance to know who I am, begin again). Hesitantly at first, he even stumbles a bit, but with growing confidence, Dimash takes us on a journey and with that last refrain, he totally owns this new ground.
Like in many of his arrangements, Dimash incorporates sacred music traditions of different cultures and ages into something uniquely his own. The music of ancient cultures often used chants, overtone singing, and melismatic techniques to induce a hypnotic trance in the listener. Dimash is not only aware of the power of music to alter one’s state of consciousness, he wields this power masterfully, but always with great respect. His friend since his teenage years, Erlan Bekchurin, is a brilliant arranger and knows exactly what Dimash wants to accomplish. Together they create magic. Dimash insisted on the use of the kobyz, an instrument which was used in Kazakh shamanism to communicate with spirits, and it fits beautifully. The best Kobyz player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck, performs masterfully as always.

The instrument is called a Kobyz, one of the oldest instrument in the world. Played by his fellow countryman, Olzhas Qurmanbek. He trains hard/smart to go low and high. This song is written by the piano player, Igor Krutoy, Ukrainian/Russian composer. You know he's human, he's sweating. Lol.

This is the New Wave Song Competition 2021, for newly emerging young singers. Dimash has performed here before, but now returning as a Headline Act, and also Guest Judge. He world premiered 3 brand new songs at this event. On two of them; Stranger and Ave Maria, he collaborated with the famous Composer; Igor Krutoy, whom you see there on the piano. Igor came out of semi-retirement to write especially for the unique voice of Dimash. They also provided valuable performance experience by including the young competitors in the choir for each piece. The third new song performed here; 'Fly Away' is very different, but then, Dimash always changes it up...
As for 'Stranger,' here Dimash uses his 'many voices' to represent those of the increasing numbers of Displaced Peoples ( men, women, children, young, and old ) driven from their homes by various trauma's and having to start again, with nothing, as 'strangers in strange lands'.
{ And these are the lucky one's as Compassion Fatigue is alive and well and increasing across the world, with so many countries now shrinking their humanitarian intake and leaving many adrift at sea - literally. }
As you get to know Dimash's work you will see that in addition to his pride in his own country and culture, many of his pieces carry humanitarian and anti-war messages.
As for that hauntingly beautiful stringed instrument; that is the Kobyz, which Dimash insisted be included in the composition of this piece. A very ancient forebear of all the modern stringed instruments we know today. In ancient times it was only Holy men { Shaman's and Medicine Men } who were allowed to play this instrument as it's sound was believed to have special powers that could drive away evil spirits and heal the sick. 😊

The phenomenon that is Dimash is always surprising the listener! He has an epic vocal range but it is better to just listen to him, feel the pure emotion he is expressing and not worry too much about how he does the things he does, just enjoy it. That last note is something like 20 seconds long, the melismatic singing he demonstrates in the middle of this song is beautiful...not what we are used to hearing in the West but through Dimash we are all experiencing the beauty of different cultures and styles of singing, essentially every song he does shows us something new.
