@@thecosmicaesthetic The real question for me is if I wait for Graphic Audio, or if I just do it for my second read. I'm thinking I probably won't be able to stop myself from listening to the regular audiobook the moment it comes out

He's literally stopped me killing myself 4 times. I listen to the graphic audio. The best was listening to dalinar become unity ad I sat in the street bawling like a 5 year old (I'm 35) looking for my missing cat who I never got back. I was on my way to the 7 story carpark to jump when I fell in the street crying. So I put it on, I stood with dalinar. I screamed you cannot have my pain, and checked myself into the ED depth instead.
As someone who drives a lot for work I appreciate the long listening times for the audiobooks. I was absolutely delighted Words of Radiance was 50+ hours long!
After just finishing Oathbringer, I've got one more to add: it will ruin all other book series for you! It has one of the most satisfying endings I've ever read, and there's still 7 books left. 10/10, never read this series.
From a audiobook listener, I was recommended this series from a fellow audiobook commuter and I take his recommendations at heart, but after being COMPLTELTY LOST in the first few chapters of The Way of Kings, I almost cut my losses and left it, but I really trust my friend so I kept pushing through and finally a piece caught hold when Shallan meets up with Jasnah. After that things started making a little sense and now I am deep into the second book and can't stop.
My brother. Your video came a year too late. My friend had a friend who had a hard copy of the Way of Kings, he knows I love reading so he recommends it for me. Me being the innocent soul I was, I started reading The Way of Kings, then I realized I had to start from Mistborn to get the whole experience, so about 100 pages in WoK I switched to Mistborn. Yesterday, I finished Tress and I announce my failure to read the whole Cosmere in one year as I still have Yumi and The Sunlit Man to read. To be fair I did start around March but storms I'm still crying of the sheer size of my failure.
2:46 So true. I actually read Warbreaker first, years ago, about a dozen times. I caught little curious hints, but when Nightblood turned up at the end of book two I actually shouted.
I think it's getting close to reread time to prepare for book 5. Make it what I do on New Years Day starting. Nice having the last Skyward before then.
Yeah starting with Stormlight 1 was rough, but I bought Stormlight 2 immediately after that so it was fine... until I finished and there was no Stormlight 3 yet. But I am not a Sanderson addict, I didn't read the alcatraz books... yet.
I've just finished reading Way of Kings for the first time. I only found out halfway through the book that there is something called the Cosmere, and have now just started Mistborn because apparently there's a shared universe of books to catch up on :P
Everything's connected, though it takes a while for those connections to become significant enough to impact the story. If you want a good reading order that allows all those connections to build on each other, check out my most recent reading order video!
Bro I'm at 1:30sec and everything you've said to dissuade me has only spurned me on further. I've listened to the first 4 books and you saying 10 could be that long brings me great joy.
I love that you've got the Belgariad on your shelf! I read that series multiple times in my teens and 20. I read it again in my 30s and it didn't land quite as well, but there's still that nostalgia.
I read all of Mistborn era1/2 in 2022 (Lost Metal when it was released) Finally read TWoK last month and loved it way more than I thought I would. Now I’m following a reading order to try to catch up on the cosmere before SL5 comes out in December. Looking forward to rereading Lost Metal just prior to SL5 to better understand all the crossovers I didn’t have context for at the time!
The main connections with Lost Metal are Elantris and Emperor's Soul, but there's a bunch of tidbits scattered throughout that should be fun to pick up the second time around!
I think Mistborn is the gateway drug, and the Stormlight Archive is what ends up being the drug of choice. I have a tendency for compulsive behavior and I do the reading and audiobook both. Reading is my preference, but when I want to continue and cannot or should not (like when I need to sleep) I switch to the audiobook. It keeps the story going.
I was skeptical about this video at first, I can now say after point 5 I laughed aloud because I have been trying to understand the full scope of the cosmere for 4 years now and counting😅
I have never read a book on my own will in my life other than the Diary of A Wimpy Kid series when I was very young. This video and the few others I watched beforehand really made me want this series to be my first. It was a hard decision between this and The Lord of the Rings/Hobbit series... but since I've already experienced the beautiful (and in my opinion, best ever) movies from that universe, I've chosen to read those books afterward. The moment I finished watching this video and reading the comments, I bought the hardcover version (like the one you have) off Amazon. Weirdly enough, I completely lost the urge to read when it arrived. Probably due to anxiety making it almost impossible to focus on anything... let alone an intricate novel 😅. But finally, just today, I read the back, intro stuff, and the prelude. I was sitting in my dark room during a light rainstorm with a candlelight illuminating the pages. The flickering flame was getting to me at first... but as I continued to read, I felt so tranquil and immersed. Like, just the prelude has me like this?! And no joke, right as I got done reading the last chunk of the prelude, the candlelight slowly faded out as I looked at the Book One artwork on the page next to it. My first experience reading a novel has already been so magical... way more than I could have ever hoped for. I've grown accustomed to saying "sorry for the paragraph" when I write long comments on TH-cam, but I feel like this is THE environment to write as much as I can 😂. Thank you a ton for making this video! Your sarcasm and the comments have set me on a path that will most likely change my mind and life for the better. I can't really put into words how I feel at this moment because I've never felt this way before... but the best way I can describe it is my soul has a bit more desire to grow. Decpite the simplicity of this video, I just want to thank you again. Couldn't have come at a better time in my life 🥲
Amazing! If you were the only one to watch this video, I would consider it worth it. Enjoy your journey into the cosmere! I'd love to hear how you progress!
@TheCosmerenaut your comment reminded me I had a book to read 😅 Got done with the prologue, and I'm already in love with how Stormlight and Shardblades work. I remember the most common compliment during my research was how cool the magic is. The fight with the king in Shardplate was so badass. Just a few pages, and I already miss the King lol. The way he described the hallway sequence was amazing, too.
So I just finished chapter 17 of the way of Kings I have started to read this series about three other times before this is the first time that it's actually stuck and I'm actually starting to like the story very much so I'm just watching videos about it great video new subscriber here
Im a truck driver, often spending 11 or more hours a day behind the wheel. Binged all the Mistborn audiobooks+ arcanum unbound, and now have a month or 2 worth of audiobooks through Stormlight.
Lmao see I first read Stormlight 1-3 years ago, directly after finishing (and re-reading) Wheel of Time. It was a pretty easy transition. I mean, WoT has a CHAPTER that’s longer than the entire first Harry Potter book 😅
I failed at book 10 the first time around (Crossroads of Twilight, why you gotta suck?) but finally got through the 2nd try during all the Covid stuff. I'm glad Knife of Dreams was good, Jordan was able to go out on a high note. Then of course Sanderson knocked the final book out of the park. It was like the part of the book that Sanderson is best at, except actually it was the entire book.
Listening to the audiobooks, currently on Oathbringer and am at the interlude between part 3 and part 4 (After everything that went down at the palace) and I'm heartbroken! And also need to know what happens next.
@TheCosmerenaut I actually had to hold back the tears since my man is also listening to it and he hasn't reached that part yet. I didn't want to have to explain why I was sobbing and spoil it for him. 😅
I just started reading a series called The Wondering Inn by Pirate Aba and the first book is 1235 pages long.... so when I finished this series I will look into Brandon Sanderson books 😂
Hey guys, I'm new to the Stormlight archive(and to Sanderson), I've only just finished the first one and I'm completely dedicated to the long road ahead. I'm sure this fandom is wholesome right?
Sanderson has mentioned the second arc (after book 5) will go back to being shorter, like the first book, and slowly gain length throughout the second arc of Stormlight
I prefer reading to listening. I prefer longer stories because the end of books, series, TV series etc as I've become emotionally invested. I find it difficult to move on and begin something else...I...mourn the end if that makes any sense. Wheel of time being my favorite.
Currently alternating between reading Rhythm of War and listening to it. It's the only way I'm finishing these things... fortunately i've already finished all... what is it? 7 mistborn? I can't remember, it's all one massive story at this point.
I so agree stormlight is a gateway to the cosmere. After rhythm of war I had so many questions I ended up binging Elantris, warbreaker, mistborn and etc…
The other reason we don't go through withdrawals is because of rereading ... no you may not know when how many times I have read The Way Of Keyings or The Emporer's Soul ...
Off to the start of this "negatives" I'm the Vince McMahon meme where he grows from excited to outright ecstatic when the page count starts from 1k and only goes up
Jokes on you for the audiobook part, Oathbringer got me that Gold Mount Everest badge I was missing 😂. Very funny video by the way. Also the addiction warning is reeeeeeeeaaaaal
@@wissam8964 fr. I have read most of the Cosmere, all of worm and all of a practical guide to evil, but somehow they all feel short compared to the wandering inn. (It's probably the easiest to read out of all of them though).
I actually listen to this on 3X so it definitely meant a lot faster. I can’t imagine listening to it on normal speed though some of it’s a little bit wordy, but good I would say worth it or even if you just read Cal parts.
"Stormlight archives is a gateway drug to the rest if the cosmere" Me, currently on my 2nd comprehensive Cosmere read through, also having read stormlight archives once and listened to the audiobooks twice: "WHAT? noooooooooooooo 😅"
3:44 Until 2025 When we won't get a new book for YEARS! No stormlight for at least 10 years and no Mistborn till he completes Era 3. We might get Elantris sequals. But for the rest?
Honestly though, I couldn’t get into the Cosmere and I read Mistborn era 1 and the Way of Kings. I’m tempted to follow the sunk cost and read Words of Radiance since I own it but that doesn’t sound like an enjoyable use of my life.
As Brandon said, Words of Radiance is often peoples' favorite of the Stormlight books. But also, as Brandon has said, his writing isn't necessarily for everyone. I'd recommend giving it a try. Or read Tress! I love that one, and it has a very different feel from Mistborn or Stormlight.
@@TheCosmerenaut Honestly the idea of listening to it on audio doesn't sound like a terrible idea. It's interesting to see how haters complain about the series. I personally was okay with the slow burn and even enjoyed it (some parts could have been deleted or condensed, though), but I personally didn't enjoy the characters, the writing style, or some of the philosophy. In a way it reminded me of the feeling I had playing Zelda - Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom: You get to enjoy a large world that's filled with many interesting things but overall the meat of the game felt unsatisfying.
@@TheCosmerenaut Also, unlike a lot of other people, I actually struggle to like Kaladin. He reminds me of people in my past who I've had issues with. My favorite parts of tWoK were actually Shallan's segments.
That's not true, stormlight will be 5 books, next 5 books is different era so it's not same stormglight - same as it was in mistborn/final empire series - as stated by Sanderson.
joke's on you! i listen to the audiobooks at a relaxing 2.25x speed. i'm thinking about making a kind of cosmere datapack (diet mod) for minecraft. it's also really fun to make cosmere powers in Mutants and Masterminds. i once made a full feruchemist-mistborn that got iesekai'd into the world we were playing. at this point the only books i had read were mistborn books 1-3, and was a little way into book 4. my character was a cowboy-style law-woman. she had a greatsword and a rifle. the rifle had aluminium rounds, and the greatsword had all 16 metals mixed into 1. no i had no idea how goddamn close i was to foreshadowing my own experiences in reading books 5 & 6. also if you can't get enough of the cosmere, i recommend Shadow of the Conqueror by Shad Brooks (shadiversity). it gives of VERY strong vibes of "i just read the stormlight archives, and now i'm inspired to write my own book!" it also reads like memoirs, so get ready for heavy first-person narration of internal world mechanics.
The way of kings and Words of Radiance I treat as one huge perfect novel. It has everything and it has shown itself to make me a better person. Reading his other stuff just makes me want to reread way of kings lol. Life before death
I wouldn't call Stormlight a "gateway" cosmere. For me that was Mistborn. I would have never attempted Stormlight if he hadn't pulled me in with his previous works.
I think Mistborn is the gateway drug. Then I read Stormlight, then Warbreaker, now I've nearly finished Mistborn era 2 despite saying I was happy with the trilogy. Which I realise now is only 3 series of which one contains a single (for now????) book but it's for sure a lot.
I listened to the wheel of time which took quite a while and as soon as the last book ended, I started the first book again... I listened to the way of kings for 16 hours today.... I have to say it was rough and not very engaging.
It's definitely got a steeper learning curve than Wheel of Time, especially with all the switching between characters at the beginning. Though I tapped out halfway through Winter's Heart.
There are 50% more books of the Stormlight Chronicles in German. Simply because we love words, so when translating, the 4 English books had to be translated into 6 German books. However, they also have their thousand pages. As a German, you really shouldn't read them.
Don't threaten me with a good time, Storm it! An 83+ hour audiobook sounds right up my alley.

And now you have even more questions...
The other reason we don't go through withdrawals is because of rereading ... no you may not know when how many times I have read The Way Of Keyings or The Emporer's Soul ...
While reading words of radiance, I did something I'm not proud of. I skipped to the end of the book to make sure everything was going to be alright.
We all make mistakes now and then. I hope you've grown from that experience. ;)
The first reason was enough. I remember reading The Book Thief for middle school, and it was exhausting.
They don't talk about the muscular impact of reading fiction nearly enough.
Don't tell me not to read these or I'll set my jaw and come at you like a tempest.
Like a highstorm?
I saw book one had 45 hour audiobook and was like "I'm down for a good time" 😂😂😂
This also should be titled: why you should not re read the Stormlight Archive
Rereads are worse, because you know what's going to happen.
On book 13 of wheel of time and really wanted something big and long to spend reading so this sounds up my alley
Welcome to the Cosmere. You'll never want to leave.
It's taking me 8 years to finish Words of Radiance...still love love love it! 😅
Too late, i just finished words of radiance. NOT STOPPING ANY TIME SOON
Oh no, we've lost another one!
Off to the start of this "negatives" I'm the Vince McMahon meme where he grows from excited to outright ecstatic when the page count starts from 1k and only goes up
The math don't lie.
on the final of the oathbringer my blood preasure sky roket to 180/130 and
I couldn't stop reading
See! Health risks just from reading these storming books!
Jokes on you for the audiobook part, Oathbringer got me that Gold Mount Everest badge I was missing 😂. Very funny video by the way. Also the addiction warning is reeeeeeeeaaaaal
I'm a truck driver averaging 9 hrs a day on the road an 83 hr book wouldn't take me a month to listen to
Woof, that'd hardly take a week.
is your steve argyle patron the steve argyle of liliana of the veil fame?
It is! I did an interview with him a couple years ago.
Wind and Truth has 1329 pages with a 65 hour audiobook. You were pretty close
Seeing this on chapter 7 of book 1... "Im not seeing the issue here"
Love this video, lol! I've definitely put far too much money into Sanderson, but it's worth it every single time I do😂😳
"You're gonna suffer, but you're gonna be happy about it."
@@TheCosmerenaut Ron never knew that statement could be applied to something and actually be wise. 😂
Lol the trending upward page count graph for book 10 had me busting up laughing
It's math! It's bound to happen!
1700 pages, you say?
what thats it
try to read the wandring inn
@@wissam8964 fr. I have read most of the Cosmere, all of worm and all of a practical guide to evil, but somehow they all feel short compared to the wandering inn. (It's probably the easiest to read out of all of them though).
Webseries are a step beyond.
I actually listen to this on 3X so it definitely meant a lot faster. I can’t imagine listening to it on normal speed though some of it’s a little bit wordy, but good I would say worth it or even if you just read Cal parts.
3x speed? That's blazing!
I actually did a reread of the Cytoverse, but that was when I already owned Defiant. Been having some readers block lately.
My wife finally finished Defiant! I'm so excited to be able to talk about it finally!
I have consumed era 1 within a week, while doing a normal 40 hour job and sports activities on 3 evenings. It is possible if you want. xD
Wow, that's some impeccable time management!
Ye i heard the first 4 books when i was working for my dad
Didnt knew those books are so famous
"Stormlight archives is a gateway drug to the rest if the cosmere"
Me, currently on my 2nd comprehensive Cosmere read through, also having read stormlight archives once and listened to the audiobooks twice: "WHAT? noooooooooooooo 😅"
It'll get ya. Sounds like it got ya.
Brilliant!!
Thank you!
3:44 Until 2025 When we won't get a new book for YEARS! No stormlight for at least 10 years and no Mistborn till he completes Era 3. We might get Elantris sequals. But for the rest?
The man isn't able to not write. He's gonna sneak something to us somehow.
Should I read them if I find lots of action scenes or hard magic systems boring? I tried the first chapter and found the action a bit over the top.
Admittedly, they're not for everyone. If action scenes aren't your forte, I'd suggest giving Emperor's Soul a shot!
@@TheCosmerenaut okay. Thanks for replying and for the recommendation.
Good luck!
That's fair. It definitely is expansive.
@@TheCosmerenaut Also, unlike a lot of other people, I actually struggle to like Kaladin. He reminds me of people in my past who I've had issues with. My favorite parts of tWoK were actually Shallan's segments.
I don't have much time to read cause I work to jobs and life stuff, but I only have 5 hours left of the way of kings. This is so fucking good
It is exactly that.
I read mistborn first and now I have to read all the books from start to finish 😭
I've got a good order for you!
That's not true, stormlight will be 5 books, next 5 books is different era so it's not same stormglight - same as it was in mistborn/final empire series - as stated by Sanderson.
Stormlight will be two five book arcs, but unlike the Mistborn Eras there will only be 5-10 years between them.
Too many pages? I am in heaven now and I am still only at book FOUR!
Book 10 is going to be like that entire Wheel of Time in one volume.
joke's on you! i listen to the audiobooks at a relaxing 2.25x speed.
i'm thinking about making a kind of cosmere datapack (diet mod) for minecraft. it's also really fun to make cosmere powers in Mutants and Masterminds. i once made a full feruchemist-mistborn that got iesekai'd into the world we were playing. at this point the only books i had read were mistborn books 1-3, and was a little way into book 4. my character was a cowboy-style law-woman. she had a greatsword and a rifle. the rifle had aluminium rounds, and the greatsword had all 16 metals mixed into 1. no i had no idea how goddamn close i was to foreshadowing my own experiences in reading books 5 & 6.
also if you can't get enough of the cosmere, i recommend Shadow of the Conqueror by Shad Brooks (shadiversity). it gives of VERY strong vibes of "i just read the stormlight archives, and now i'm inspired to write my own book!" it also reads like memoirs, so get ready for heavy first-person narration of internal world mechanics.
That character sounds awesome; you were definitely on to something!
I'll add it to the list!
I got the 1st 3 books of stormlight for Christmas in 2021. It's too late for me.
At least you're in good company.
The way of kings and Words of Radiance I treat as one huge perfect novel. It has everything and it has shown itself to make me a better person. Reading his other stuff just makes me want to reread way of kings lol. Life before death
Beautifully put.
I wouldn't call Stormlight a "gateway" cosmere. For me that was Mistborn. I would have never attempted Stormlight if he hadn't pulled me in with his previous works.
I know a lot of people who started with Stormlight and got hooked, though I agree with you - Mistborn is my typical recommendation.
I totally agree with Mistborn. That's what originally got me hooked.
Stormfather's beard!! what an intro!!
The Stormlight Archive was the best series ive ever read in my entire life. Next to Name of the Wind and Red Rising
I'm working on Name of the Wind right now!
i brought stormlight once or twice on therapy 👀
It just naturally comes up!
Hhahahaha These are all great reasons to read the books. Love it!!!
They're valid reasons!
@@TheCosmerenaut I'm almost done with the fourth book already
I really enjoyed 1-5. I'll eventually make it through the rest.
3:21 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA he said a Word!
There are 50% more books of the Stormlight Chronicles in German. Simply because we love words, so when translating, the 4 English books had to be translated into 6 German books. However, they also have their thousand pages. As a German, you really shouldn't read them.
Huh, interesting!
