I knew Sanderson from wheel of time and decided to jump in Mistborn. After the last pages of Final Empire I rushed through the trilogy like crazy, I was barely doing anything other than reading until I finished! Became a Big fan. In a Rush of Hype back couple years I bought the first 2 books but I am really skeptic of Brandoms caliber to maintain the quality through 10 books.

There is a lot to read if you know and speak Swedish, otherwise not so much. Swedish fantasy literature is not big, if not for children and teenagers. A serie of books by Sara Bergmark Elfgren and Mats Strandberg are translated into English and have good grades.

I agree with you about the prose, I'm a big fan of super beautiful and detailed writing-- but Sanderson, who has fairly straight forward prose, is still my favorite author. His world-building, amazing magic systems, and incredible character depth and progression are the main focus and I'm totally okay with that.

I fully agree with this. Brandon Sandersons straight forward writing style also makes it easier to get into I find. I actually prefer straight forward writing because then I can focus more on getting absorbed in the story rather than having to divide my attention between the story and gorgeous writing 🥰 I think some stories use beautiful writing really well and that's great when it suits but I don't think it would suit Sanderson's books. I think his straight forward writing suits much better and allows me to focus in the story 100 percent ❤️💖💓🦇🦇👻👻💌💌💝

IMO it is exceptionally well handled and adds to the characters rather then detracts. Some people may still want to avoid it since it might hit too close too home, others might find it fascinating and relatable. Regardless it's there and it's good to know before starting the series.

Thank you for this comment. I myself do not struggle with some of these things, but having read Rhythm of War it definitely has a bit of a trigger warning, even more than the first three. I also think it is handled exceptionally (and many of the other beta readers who do struggle with mental illness agree), but something to be aware of for sure.

A great video, about a great author, about a great series!
I only came across Sanderson because he finished of the Wheel of Time, and then got absolutely addicted!
I'd go as far to as to say that I think the Stormlight Archive is quite a lot better than the WoT... (Let alone the whole "Cosmere" stuff - one day I'll get my head around it!)
I've always predominantly been a Sci-Fi fan, and often found it difficult to get absorbed in a Fantasy series, but these books completely proved me wrong, and made me read as much other Brandon Sanderson as I could get my hands on... (yes, including the Starsight books, which were a great present for my niece - she loved them, and is now a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan!)
I just wanted to echo some of the great things Elliot has said, and add a couple more things I love about Brandon's writing:
    1) I think you're right, Elliot, it's not the most colourful prose I've come across, but I think that's a good thing. It reminds me quite a lot of what Orson Scott Card referred to as "American" style Sci-Fi... The aim is for the Author to be as Transparent as possible, and let the character and ideas be the main driver of the readers imagination. I think Brandon is excellent at this - you get completely absorbed into the characters and the plot, and don't really think about the language used. Any colourful language is then woven into the world itself, usually by quoting literary works within the story... (Like you, I'm trying to avoid spoilers!)
    2) It's another Sci-Fi writing link actually.... It feels like he started with the "Rules of the world", and then writes his characters and story into that world - this means the "magic" (or whatever) is absolutely rooted in EVERYTHING in the stories - The "rules of the world" are so well thought out, detailed, and self-consistent, all you really need to do is put a character into a situation, and all the story just flows beautifully (probably more prominent in the Mistborn series', but I think it applies here too). Whenever I've tried to read fantasy novels in the past, it always seemed that the "magic" was never well defined, and was just twisted to further whatever plot the author had in mind, (like some sort of bad DC Comics TV series) - I never got that impression with any of Brandon's books - he lays out the rules, usually nice and slowly, using a character to discover them at the same time as the reader, and then just asks the great Sci-Fi question "so, given that... what would happen if...?"
    3) He loves an Underdog! I've sensed a bit of a running theme, and I don't really think I'm giving away any spoilers when I say this - he likes to set up a random (some might say "arbitrary") class system, and then set about turning it completely on it's head... we all love an underdog story, and Brandon just knocks that idea up to the next level - definite "Fist Pumping" material... Like you, I also found myself shouting "Yes!" quite a bit - often in some inappropriate situations!
I can't wait for his further works - it looks like we've got plenty to look forward to - More Stormlight and Mistborn Eras!

I bought Way of Kings months and months ago, I'm dying to read it, but I was caught in the middle of mistborn, and then I have to read warbreaker, and THEN move on to way of kings, all while weaving other author's books in between Sanderson's so I don't get burned out. I have like 3 books left I have to get through before I can start Way of Kings.
I've never had to go through such a journey just to crack open a book and start reading it lol.
I don't know if you remember me, but I was complaining about the first Mistborn a few videos back. It did get better, especially when Sanderson stopped saying "paled" 6 times per page, but it still never quite got me as invested as Name of the Wind. I've got 200 pages left of Hero of Ages. But all the while, Way of Kings is burning a hole into my bookshelf.

So true regarding the fandom... There is so much hyperbole used with Sanderson's work and that everything he does is absolute gold. I'm in the minority in that I didn't love the Stormlight series like others do (I still enjoy reading them, but they don't crack my top 20), and whenever I vocalize that it's like, "GET THE PITCHFORKS OUT".
Also spot on regarding the "good guys" -- Sanderson's "good" characters tend to all have modern day sensibilities yet exist in a world where there's a lot of black and grey as well, which I think is a bit of an easy way to have the reader root for them as they are more relatable. I'd love to see him do a main character whose a bit more grey (maybe he has already as I haven't read too much of his work!).

I would also say, as much as Way of Kings is one of my absolute favorite books, it can be hard to get into for the first bit. There are a number of prologues and flashbacks to open the books, which are awesome scenes but makes it a bit hard to figure out who are the main characters you want to care about. Just knowing the names of Kaladin, Shallan, and Dalinar will help to watch for those! And give it a chance to build up the world. It's also one of my favorite book series to reread in all of its thousand pages of glory, because a lot of that intro you might forget the details, and then go back and realize they were talking to someone who became important later, or talking about this important event etc, that is really cool to go back and get those details since the books are so filled with them. He's a master at making his books have tons of content, but if you just read through and miss a lot of it, you'll have no trouble following the main plot of the book and enjoying it, you can just dive in to however deep you want! Enjoy!

I understand Stormlight Archive is not one of these; it is a manuscript he started and didn't finish either before or during that time. It does strike me as the sort of book that would be written when one has some experience at the job. Also I understand the Kaladin we see isn't the original Kaladin... although that is not unusual for an evolving MS and character.

I agree it is not dense or grim but I am only 100 pages into the first book. I feel it is well paced and an excellent read for gamers who get all that blood and gore already. I can tell he writes a good story to develop characters and sets things up for later in the story. I am mostly fascinated by the fantasy realm he's developed and how the words he's created just 'fits' into the imagination. If I had to compare this to Game of Thrones, I would hope this story is more of an adventure than a story of betrayals. I think you cleared this up for me in the video and greatly appreciate it.

I’ve read most of Brandon Sanderson’s other adult (Mistborn is my favorite of his work so far) and YA books, but have tried to read The Way of Kings twice now (first time, I got 10% in and the second time [restarted] I got 25%). I just got buried in facts and names with extraneous information that I didn’t know what was needed to push through the story AND what I would need to enjoy the entire narrative without having to reread these Tombs again (being over 1000 pages each), before reading subsequent books later on. I don’t mind complexity, but feel overwhelmed. I’m not complaining against the books or even his writing style, it just may be that I’m not ready to read this yet (I don’t mean age-wise for I am 54, within the series). I may have to wait for the fifth book to come out...so I could possibly binge the five books...being able to retain enough of the information given without losing what is needed to enjoy the overall story (for me personally). I hope this makes sense. Again, thank you for this video...it was very helpful.

lol I know exactly what you mean. what helps me read this is the fact I was binge-ing comic books and this has taught me to slow down and digest what is going on for the moment. I would suggest to slow down a little bit and build the story in your imagination. I know fantasy brings in lots of characters that are difficult to pronounce their names and I just take this as a cue that maybe they are not hugely important. I knew Kaladin would be important for the fact that his name is Paladin with a K, well I guessed he would be important when he first entered the story. Hope this helps!
