Eddie Vedder is one of the best voices of all time. All those singers from the Grunge era had powerful, emotional voices!
As a PJ fan club member I mourn them all as favorites but relieved Ed made it out alive. He managed to not manifest his demons as addiction.

This is possibly the chessiest thing you have ever heard. I broke up with my girlfriend right before I left to go to graduation beach trip. It was a year long relationship. It was that line that broke down my facade and I could not get to her fast enough. 1992

Hard to describe how this song effected all the young men at the time. We suddenly became emotionally literate because the songs made it okay to express these feelings. It was a special time. A lot of people's cliques dissolved when these bands came out with music like this.
I bought this CD and heard this song and got instantly depressed. When my wife got home from work I had her listen to it with headphones. She became a crying mess and asked me why I did that to her. This song digs at anyone's emotions that pays attention to this song.

literally makes me tear up. He encapsulates the feeling of breaking up or being broken up with the person that we thought was the one. Then sitting there after with them being a stranger to you and thinking.....why can't she be mine again.
The irony of this song is they didn't want this song to go commercial because it was so personal. It's about love lost and you can feel the pain and suffering that life and love brings. The poetry is incredible and his voice is amazing. One of my fav all time pearl jam songs

Grunge was the logical next step in music. The 70's and 80's were so decadent and outrageous. There was so much selfishness going on and kids felt neglected. It's really, an embodiment of the angst produced by the 80's. Kurt, Eddie, Layne and Chris. I'd even say it was the cultural equivalent of rap music in that it expressed our anger at the status quo. These bands sort of told us all we are all suffering here. You are not alone. They saved my damn life. Not even being hyperbolic. Music heals better than any pill.

It’s the teenage/young angst expressed in the music. I’ve said the same. Rap took over as the mainstream most popular genre, so it only made sense for the subgeneres to emerge and the angst to be expressed in new music, with new people. Rock music has turned to garbage these days because they’re trying to cling to anything that will sell, meanwhile young rappers (the new wave of 2016-, (lil peep, lil uzi, juice wrld, xxxtentacion) all had rock infused songs, that gave them extra angst. They were literally the new rock stars, substance abuse and angst and fuck the system mentality and challenging their genre of origin. It’s extremely interesting stuff.

class of '94 here, we got lucky, that's for sure. Also this was a great reaction, she actually felt and listened to what was being expressed and not just bobbing along to the beat like some do. Pearl Jam always delivers.

I don't know if it's just your opinion. I think the 90's/2000's was the absolute best era of music ever! There are great hits from all years and genre's, and the 80's were the start of when we were able to start letting go and finally make the music people wanted to make and the messages they wanted to get out..... but the 90's and 2000's are when that feeling was fully realized and artists just absolutely let loose on the industry. Every generation will have 'their music', of course.
I remember standing in my parents basement, face staring at the tv, mesmerized by this when it first aired. Decades later, I'm still mesmerized.

These guys all had their moments but I think they got it out of their systems while they were young & got cleaned up.
They said in the 90's Heroin was everywhere in Seattle. It was just the thing to do. They didn't take it to extreme or just had good luck.

Eddie performed this after Chris Cornell died, and it transforms the nature of the song, very emotional. He's actually crying by the end.

I imagine you’ve subsequently go on to know him, the band and the fact that Eddie Vedder still has his voice and can replicate the same vocals 31 years later. This was just one of those "once in a lifetime" performances.....all that got to see it are better for it. Simply amazing!
It's crazy how that MTV Unplugged series managed to take some of the greatest rock bands and capture some of their greatest performances in a crazy short amount of time. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains...and every single one of their sets is incredible. And when you read the stories of the behind the scenes in getting them all their and getting it all to work, it's amazing that they all turned out as good as they did. Wasn't no youtube back in the day either so seeing them in this kind of setting was basically impossible. Wish there was more band performances going back way further in time. Fortunate to be able to capture these at least.
This is Eddie at his most perfect and beautiful--voice, face, hair, manner, everything. The way the song builds to the climactic "We belong together" draws you in, and when it's over, you're emotionally spent. Eddie is such a talented songwriter; the songs are like poetry, and some lines are just so profound. (I think the drums were too loud, but maybe that's just me 🙂)

Eddie is one of the most emotional vocalists I've ever experience. One of the most emotional experiences I've ever had while listening to music is the first time I heard, "Come Back" from their Pearl Jam Album(also known as the Avocado Album).
He just really puts his all into his performances, and it is always something to experience.

As many times as I've heard this song, seeing it written really adds to the power of the song. You can literally see what he's feeling.
PJ are the real deal. Vedder's growling, gravelly voice is full of gravitas & unlike that of the typical rocker. Besides his wild mane, I dig that sedated mental patient act of his. It makes his vocal delivery all the more intense. Cool band. Cool reaction.

Also, I feel like star is a bit more organic as it's describing something that is now so far out of reach it is like it's a distant star in the cosmos. Sun makes sense, though, too as a lyric. Honey, that completely sums up this performance!! As others have said in the other comments, Eddie Vedder (lead singer/songwriter) did not want this song to become a “Single”…and never was. However, the song being as powerful and as soul tapping as it is…it just drew people into it. It couldn’t be ignored. It took off without ever being “officially released”, so it became a staple at their concerts.
So, imagine, if you will…having to perform this extremely personal, gut wrenching song night after night. Maybe doing so was cathartic for him? Who knows?

That's what music is supposed to do. It doesn't have to be released to the buying public as a single to draw people into it. A connection made is a connection made, and emotional honesty and integrity makes a much stronger connection than a beat and a hook. A beat can be replicated. The emotion is unique to the song, the writer.
That’s what happened with Radiohead’s Creep, Thom Yorke end up hating it.

Eddie Vedder has such a powerful and emotional voices. Some of their other songs are Jeremy, Even Flow, Better Man, Last Kiss, Daughter, Corduroy, and Dissident. He also did a song with Chris Cornell (from Soundgarden) called Hunger Strike. Their band name Temple of the Dog.
I always thought he was the best from that era, and is right up there with the best ever. Also a good dude that has really kept his shit together for the most part. Which clearly isn't easy in that world.
That whole Temple of the Dog thing is such an interesting story in how and why it even came together. The fact you can literally count on one hand the number of times they ever even performed is unfortunate, even more unfortunate we ain't getting anymore. There's like one live performance caught on camera of Hunger Strike (besides the music video obviously) from back then that's pretty cool since it looks like it's a completely spur of the moment thing at what I think is probably some music festival. Then somehow Eddie and Chris didn't perform together for a long time, shame since they were the only two left and both seemed to have gotten past the "dangerous years". Now just Eddie left. If you ever get a chance to see the PJ20 documentary, it's well worth watching. I found it years ago and then couldn't for a long time but looks like it's show up on some sites to stream once again.

Watching you watch this is how I felt hearing it 30 years ago, and still feel it the same way as back then. The passion, depth, raw, real, haunting, soul forming music they created then AND throughout the past 3 decades has elevated my entire being and define everything I feel to such a high level that no one or no thing could even compare to achieving for me.
I'm SO thankful we still have Eddie Vedder..❤!!! The work (generally collaborations) is still as beautiful and important as this song in this setting.

Eddie Vedder (singer) is the real deal. He also does a great job when he guested with Temple of the Dog and, the late-great Chris Cornell on ‘Hunger Strike’. Also check out Chris Cornell on ‘Nothing Compares 2U’ or in Audioslave’s ‘Like a Stone’. Emotional singing at its finest!

what I love about the all the grunge bands that did a mtv unplugged is that they poured out their hearts and souls on the stage.
This performance is one of Eddie Vedder's greatest and unfortunately you can just feel the pain come through. Not just in his voice but his body language. That moment at 2:17-2:38 as he gets deeper into his emotions he's first holding the mic with both hand, then one hand slips to his lap, then both to his lap cradling his stomach. Usually the body language of someone trying to protect themselves. Again at 4:45 his arm slowly creeps from his side to crossing over. If his voice didn't scream it enough those couple things show how real it is for him in this moment.

At first, i preferred the studio version (mainly because he days the right lyrics and and when he does "the thing" towards the end the vocal effects get intense as his voice does).

Eddie Vedder has one of those voices that is instantly recognisable. I'd be surprised if you didn't recognise his voice a little. Pearl Jam were one of the big names of the grunge movement in the 1990s, but they sustained their work and popularity well into the 2000s. Although their work rate has slowed down over the years, they are still working, and still popular.
Their music and subject matter has always been quite evocative, with many songs about social or political matters, personal songs like this. Where Rage Against The Machine made you want to Rage. Pearl Jam made you think and empathise.
