  • The Corvette is very personal to me. The C4 generation of the was a game changer for Chevrolet. On the outside you will discover a sleek shape with pop-up headlights, 16in wheels and quad-tip exhaust. On the inside you will be greeted by a red leather interior, LCD dash, Bose sound system and removable targa roof. Under the hood is a 5.7L V8 that is mated to a Doug Nash 4 +3 manual gearbox. Is the 1986 Chevrolet C4 Corvette Z51 the MOST underrated sports car?

i wish cars today were more simplistic . low to the ground, just enough power to have fun but not get arrested or cause accidents, and affordable. and skip all the pointless electronics, just stick to physical buttons.

OMGOMGOMG. My first Corvette was a 1990 C4 that I bought in 1992 when I was 25 years old. I also had a C3 (1980) and now I have a C7 Z06. If I had a bigger garage I'd get another C4 and a C3. They were dogs performance-wise compared to modern cars but they made up for it in style. Congrats. It's a beauty. My C4 was Black and my C3 was Blue. My C7 is Arctic White.

Mine was a used 1991 Tpi Z28 Camaro with T Tops that I found on a used car lot for around $5,000 dollars. It was a Ford Thunderbird but loved how low the seat felt especially underneath my legs. The Ford Thunderbird had a lot of cushion and it did not feel like a natural seating position for me not even close as the 91 Z28 Camaro did.I wasn't involved into racing then but when I got settled into my ride and felt how long and big this car is I seen a friend that wasn't into cars but he had one I can't remember what it was but when he saw me I felt the presence and how much space is taken up on the road sitting then in the middle of the road talking to my friend at the time. His reaction was like I had this weapon this huge incredible spots car in black and I was loving the seating position with all of this car wrapped around me.The t tops are huge and Chevy couldn't have done a better job. No digital dash 110 electricly limited to 112 mph hot blonde and Italian ready to go chicks all around me with an automatic.Well worth the money zonk the drums and the super instability in rain. As soon as I pulled off the used car dealership lot it was a little more rainy and I was thinking about hey let's see if this car is fast and did a 180 out of the dealership lot no cars it wasn't a busy time kindy misty cloudy a little heavier light rain comfortable warm awesome easy super chill day but it was way way way to easy to loose control in the rain.A set of Goodyear GS C's made an improvement but my driving habit instantly changed. No one around me knew in any way how dangerous the tail end was in any way like I did.I would get into newer cars and be blown away how fast people went in the rain so trusting the suspension compared to me.I am thankful for instability because it kept me safer on the roads I only truthfully did one more another 180 degree wet turn except for the very same day about 5 blocks from coming home with my new ride a complete 180 degrees way way way way way to easily.Horsepower is fun but how I feel about my car is more important to me how it looks and feels to drive.I've got new adventures and changes in mind for my old school Z28 Camaro that I look forward to every day. Love the opportunity to share and your story wow a $20,000 dollar car but no room Randy for the chicks bro hahahaha. That's a real spots car an actual 350 not a detuned 305 wow.I imagine we probably had the same problem the Z28 is over the top and you have a $20,000 sports car everything changes. But hey we live and learn and to clean up our bad ass rides chill in the garage and let the summer time in good times and good memories and good people to be around and relax to good beer and good music and good food and an incredible atmospheres daily.

The C4 is incredibly underrated and super affordable. The 0-60 and 1/4 times really aren't that bad today (of course not compared to other sports cars), but for the times they were crazy. One thing that is really noticeable in these older cars is how great visibility is. I'd love to pick one of these up, but I have an 86 IROC-Z to hold me over for now.

The C4 is seriously underrated. These mid 80's models had the coolest instrument panel ever. Excellent find, incredible condition for that car. Super clean. Great job getting all that info correct on Corvette history. I grew up around my dad's 92, and I got myself an 08. So I've done a lot of studying on the brand. When the stars align I'll hopefully be able to get a C8. We need more retro reviews!

Car and Driver Rated the 1986 Corvette "The Fastest American Car" in 1986. In 1988 C4 was banned from SCCA Sports car racing Series because it won nearing every race from 1985-1988 until they had to create their own Series the Corvette Challenge. In race trim the Motor was stock with just Straight pipes Output was 270 hp and 377 TQ.

My very first corvette was an '85 and fell in love with it when I saw it, Was always a Camaro guy because I could not afford the Corvettes but I made it happen with that '84. Did not keep it too long though because it was too stiff of ride in NYC roads and felt every single little bump. Traded it in on a '85 after test driving it and had it a while until it got flooded in some terrible heavy rains. With those high sills I had a couple of nice size fish tanks (one on each side) awaiting some fishes lol, They were both an automatic because that 4+3 was crap.My next was a C5 ZO6 and now currently own a '19 Sebring Orange, naturally aspirated manual Grand Sport... which I love, love, love!

Joe, I'm an old car girl who grew up washing and learning how to wax the family car with my dad. Good memories! The first car I recall riding in was a black 64 Buick Wildcat (yes, my father loved cars lol). My dad let me sit on his lap and "steer" the Buick throughout the neighborhood. Anyway, I was in undergrad school from 81-85. GM was seriously considering canceling the Corvette. I was relieved when they announced they would come out with an 84. We young adults waited and waited. GM built suspense by advertising shadowy silhouette pics in magazines. I cut one out and taped it inside one of my notebooks as a motivator to keep me studying- a goal to shoot for. I had an enjoyable career as a teacher, but could never afford one. However, I just purchased a beautiful car that I will so enjoy- a 3lt Panther black collector edition Camaro. 335 horses are affordable and plenty of power for me. The car is very well built, has a beautiful wing, and front splitter to balance the styling. It's retro, yet modern, too, which I love. I also prefer being able to raise the hood and see everything. The performance exhaust provides a nice growl, and the special paint is gorgeous. And boy, the polished wheels pop with the paint lol.. I'm not bragging, but letting you know that folks of all ages appreciate your reviews and feel the same way about cars. Thanks for sharing this beautiful Corvette that brought the car back from near cancelation! I hope you enjoy it for many years to come! God bless you!

I was born in 1977, so my first real memories of seeing Corvettes are of the C4. The C4 is my favorite Corvette, and I would love to drive a C4, or maybe even own one.

My uncle has a C4. It's an automatic white convertible with a tan interior and tan top. He's had a lot of nice cars - Mercedes, Cadillac, Audi, and now he has a Porsche sedan, which is what he primarily drives. Still on nice days, he takes out the Vette, lowers the top, and goes for a cruise. It has been 30 years, and he still loves driving it.

_Great news right here for you Joe. Been a Corvette aficionado since I was barely 20(the first three were C3s). Fast forward to my 30s when I could finally afford a brand new 1991 Corvette convertible, I was hooked on the fourth gens. Seven C4s later, I still love what the General did for the thirteen model-year run of a Corvette that in my eyes saved the car from the ultimate chopping block. I know folks think it was the C5 that did that(but seriously without the success of the 1984 to 1996 Corvettes, there would have been no C5, and what we see today as the ultimate American Muscle car in the C8)._

When we get to a certain age we take a look and see how good we had it. Then we start looking for something that defined that era, it's like looking for a needle in a stack of needles. My first 'sports' car was a 2004 Mustang V6 5 speed manual when I was a 20 year old college sophomore. I could have afforded the GT but insurance would have been almost $2k per year vs about $700 with the V6. Talk about slow! I actually think my mom's 2001 Sable was faster than that car! However, it was the look of the SN-95 generation of Mustang and the fact that it was a 5 speed that made it a special experience. Plus the fact that I bought it brand new and all by myself was very important!

I already knew from the start you wouldn't mention the fact that they went undefeated for 3 years straight (as in they won every single race) in SCCA Showroom Stock from '85-'87. Porsche and Lotus got so butthurt they got together and had them banned from the series and they had to race against themselves in Corvette Challenge. If you're going to call it underrated you might want to mention why.

I owned an 85 Z51 coup and a 86 Indy pace car convertible. They were good cars for their day but they had their problems. Engine was underpowered I’m my opinion. The dash cluster would burn out periodically. They did handle and brake very well. Now days they would be a good starter Corvette for the price. The C5 which I’ve also owned is a much better generation many of the problems the C4 had were corrected in the C5. The C5 Z06 is probably the best performance deal out there right now for the money.
