I have been using your videos and website for the past couple of months to upgrade my Hp z420 and I just want to give you a huge thanks for all the help you have given me. I hope you are blessed with good karma because you have made my life a lot easier! Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this video I run an IT program at a small tech school and your upgrade information has proven priceless due to our having many Z420s on hand! Thank you so much!!
Thanks for all the Z420 vids - they've been very useful. I decided to do some benchmarking with the various CPU's I've since collected (my HPZ420 originally came with an E5-1620 v2). I didn't try the 2687W V2 (150W TDP), but do have the optional high performance heat sink to run one, but I guess the results will be similar to the 2667
Thanks for the video! However, if you're making a fresh thermal compound application you must clean the old layer off the heatsink before tighten it up over the CPU, even if the old layer is from the same kind of paste used. Also it's recommended to screw down the heatsink following a cross pattern between mounting points to ensure a smooth spread of the TIM. Best regards!
Yeah I noticed that too right away. Definitely want to clean that old thermal paste from the heatsink before applying new to the new processor or else you're gonna have too much on there and it won't dissipate the heat properly.
I would like to thank you, good Sir You have the best videos on old HP/Dells in Xeon configs. You have helped me a ton without knowing. Otherwise I would have ordered couple of wrong PCs while looking for one I need.
Thank you for the videos mate I’m currently upgrading my Z420 and the information you’re giving out is extremely useful I just wish I could access your website from the uk to see the part numbers :)
Hello! I just got one Z420 recently with 1620 and this board has RAID sata on it, it looks the SAME as on this video . understood from someone that to update the BIOS will be very difficult because there are 3-types of BIOS to be update, is this correct? Hope that you could help by showing how to update these BIOS on this system. many thanks 22 Aug 2020
Great video! I was planning to upgrade my cpu so this was clutch. Quick question though. I’m planning on switching cases, do you know what type of case this motherboard can fit in? Will it fit in a regular Atx case? Thanks!

I've heard of people overclocking this PC but I seem to be having issues. I can't get an overclock to work. The software applies it but the clocks stay the same. Can you give me some tips as to what might be preventing me from overclocking it using either XTU or throttlestop? I'm using a 1680 V2 inside of it. I just thought of something. Could it be the latest BIOS version is preventing me from overclocking?

That board should work with V2 processors. If you overclock the processor you should consider using the liquid cool cpu option. Otherwise your cpu will get really hot.
Hey Nicholas, we haven’t tested that specific pn yet. One of our trusted Community members claims that if the pn starts with a “6” it will only support V1 processors. If it starts with a “7”, it will support v1 or V2 processors. Hopefully this info is useful to you.

Hello my friend, z420 support e5 2670 v2 ?
Only Z420 v2.
To check which version you own:
v1: bios -> system information -> Boot Block Date: 12/28/2011
v2: Boot Block Date: 3/6/13
@@ota1998 thanks bro, but I was able to see here my motherboard supports v2 and the xeon E5 2670 V2 worked smoothly

Not all v2 chips can be overclocked. There is a list floating around somewhere. If you plan on overclocking make sure you get a xeon that allows it.
I would like to see you go through the BIOS of the 420 and talk about what does what..
We'll add it to the list. Do you have any questions in particular about the bios?

If it’s $200 or under you should be doing well. Make sure to get one that supports the V2 processors.

Where is the product number on the mother board sorry but I'm new to computers
It's located on a small white sticker on the planar board. Look for a number like this 619557-001 or this 708615-001.
12-Core 2.7GHz Intel Xeon Ivy Bridge-EP E5-2697 v2 how do i know what Gen my Z420 has
By the boot block date in bios. If its 12-28-11 it's a v1. If its 03-06-13 its v2.
I was able to install the E5-2697 in my Z420 with no problems, also I was able to install 128GB of memory in it and that also works.
