I shoot extensively on a cyc wall and seamless in our commercial studio and this has become the biggest pain in the tushy. We repaint the floor on our cyc wall about every 2-3 weeks. I have tried multiple methods for cleaning up these areas, most involve the healing brush, clone stamp, low flow painting and the blur tool. We are very successful in our methods but this one is simply the best and I don't know why I did not think of doing this sooner. Of all your episodes, this one has been the most practical and widely needed. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Great job folks.
yesterday i had an interview as a image edititer for a big company. one part of the interview was to show how i clean a background and the knowledge of this video, saved my butt. thank you so much for your freaking awesome content
You are a lifesaver! I just got hired to do some corporate work on a white background. Bought the paper and feared it would get dirty right out of the box. I plan to have the clients tape their shoes' soles with painter's tape, but if they don't want to I at least still have this terrific technique. Thanks
Aaron Nace! YOU are the man!!! I could not have viewed this at a more OPPORTUNE TIME!! 300 individual kids on seamless paper........... Respect due boss!!
I recommend this with sequence separation technique. I keep layers with Median and Colour between High Frequency and Low Frequency. It helps to keep grain and more natural feeling of the image. It's something you will see on high quality print.
Thank you so much for this! Saved me so much time cleaning up a background where I used my studio wall. My white studio wall worked out great but then you could see the drywall texture throughout the image. Wanted to keep the soft shadow my light created and this worked perfectly in cleaning up the image and keeping the shadow!!
I was forced to edit my pictures, because people want money for that of course, I had some PS knowledge but with this guy I feel like a pro now :D It's gonna be the only time I need help in detail, but I will subscribe cuz he explains so well and he is so funny :D I hope u reach 3M in the near future !
I really wanted to thank you for the amazing tutorials. I've been watching your tutorials since I've started photoshoping, which was a year ago. You've helped me gain much more skills in photoshop than any other youtube channel. Not only do you show me how to do something, but you also tell us the shortcuts that you use. This allowed me to learn very useful shortcuts for future uses. Even though I've used photoshop for 50% face swapping, and 50% random requests from Reddit, but over all goofy things, I'm still very grateful to have learned so much from your channel. Thanks again, and I hope you have a good day/night!
Hey Aaron, great find with the median based cleaning, really inventive! One thing that I would like to add is that by using median in 8bit you get severe color banding - this is a big issue if, for example, someone is trying to submit images to some stock agencies. This can be fixed by putting the image in 16bit mode and then adding monochromatic gaussian noise (filter > noise > add noise) to those areas. Keep it up with the great videos!
Thank you so much Aaron!! I've been having trouble with cleaning up the background with clone stamp tool, and you taught me how to solve this issue in less than 10 minutes!
I just did my first shoot on a white paper backdrop and was disappointed at how dirty the paper got and all the work i would have to do with the clone stamp to make it look decent... This video is great thank :)
Great vid as always. Thanks. A little information to those who might be interested in what median really does with the image. Median is a statistical term, it is the middle value of a sample. A pixel in the filtered image will get the median of the value of the same pixel in the original image and those of the surrounding pixels within a radius you define with the slider when applying the filter. E.g. the median for a dirty pixel with the grey level of 1 surrounded by four grey pixels of 6 is 6 because this is the middle value of {1,6, 6, 6, 6}. The big difference between this and the Gaussian blur is that this latter calculates an average. For the example above this would be (1+6+6+6+6)/5=5 (a darker grey than 6). Median filter with properly chosen radius is typically better at completely clearing away unwanted footprints on 'homogeneous' seamless background while Gaussian filter will only blur these remaining sort of visible. Median could, however, ruin a nice gradient-like skin tone on the subjects' face.
this is holy grail guys. Everyone who has ever in their life spent hours on cleaning those goddamn backdrops know this pain. And what a relief to finally find an easy and functional way to avoid spending hours on that!!!
Da** -- Aaron is a sheer genius and fabulous teacher! I could have used this just last week on a black background, where I spent loads of time cleaning up the same kind of problem. I have purchased a couple of his pro tutorials. Only wish I had the cash to buy more. (Being retired now rather limits those expenditures though...)
I've been using Photoshop for a long time and never thought to use the "median" filter for this task. Thanks for the tip! Lately I've been wondering about different methods for achieving a pure white background. There are good old clipping paths but those can get tricky and time consuming. In the end of this tutorial you sampled the background highlight and painted with it to lighten up some areas of the image. To achieve a pure white background I guess you could paint (carefully) around the subject with white?
You are simply awesome Aaron ,i am a fan and supporter ,i have your monthly membership fr your unlimited tutorials ,you just make things easy and simple ..thank you ..
Awesome advice Aaron! Thanks a lot man. I'm an amateur who primarily shoots with seamless backdrops and it's always such a pain in the ass to clean up the background. Can't wait to give this a try next time.
Nice! i have been using select / mask Gaussian blur to do this; edges are always a challenge and often Gaussian didn't 'blend' things quite right. This method seems to help alleviate those problems. I admit I didn't even know about Median (Photoshop has so many pieces!) ... will try it next time!
I love all of your videos and I learn so much. You are the best! Could you do an episode on gradients, with more in-depth explanations of how they work, and when and why you'd want to use one? Thanks so much for all you do!
I really like the annotation where it says the commands you are using. Altough I would like them even more if they were a bit more subtle. Great video, I'm loving this channel more and more with every video
I've been struggling with something for quite a while now, the Perspective Warp. This is a tool that I definitely don't understand. It would be great if you could make a tutorial on how to proporly use it. I see people using it just to change the perspective of a whole picture, but I can use it just to change some objects in my image, right? Thank you so much. Keep Phlearning us!
hey ..thanks for making ur tutorial so easy n interesting ..i hv been following ur tutorials from last 2-3 days n hv learnt a lot... i basically wanna understand the difference between the midtones , highlights n shadows in photoshop...if u could provide a tutorial on these basics i'llbe very thankful to u..:)
I liked this video! I'd like to see a video on getting rid of shadows from improper lighting on the background. I understand lighting is important and I'm getting there, just that I love to use white backdrops and sometimes part of them become grey from not having them exact. The clone stamp is a little difficult. Thanks!! Jeff
really good technique....=] do you already have a tutorial explaining how to clean and fix issues on a grey background? Often i have to spend time fixing those rounded spots and texture on grey seamless paper...and thanks for the tutorials good to learn here

That took me like 10 hours before and it didn't get near as good as this method that took me about 10 minutes. Saved my life! Thanks!
i LOVE you've put the short-cuts visible..... Great service!
