    How about the Noack % of viscosity weight loss?

  • @averyalexander2303
    @averyalexander2303 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    There is no reason to use a 0W oil in a race car and several reasons not to. The first reason not to is the NOACK volitility. This is a measurement of how much oil will burn off in extreme heat. The 0W30 is at 8.8% loss compared to the 10W30's 4.1% loss. While 8.8% loss in that test isn't bad, it will burn off more than 2 times as much as the 10W30 oil under high temperatures. Second, look at the high temp high sheer viscosity. 3.07 vs 3.11 isn't a big difference, but it is still a disadvantage compared to 10W30. Also, the 10W30 has an 18 degree F higher flash point and 32 degree higher fire point than 0W30, which again shows that the 0W30 doesn't handle extreme heat as well as 10W30.
    To be clear, I'm not saying that the 0W30 isn't good, it is an outstanding oil especially for vehicles that are started in cold temperatures. However, it does have disadvantages compared to 5W30 and 10W30, and unless the vehicle is going to be started in extreme cold, it's advantage of flowing better when cold doesn't outweigh it's disadvantage of not tolerating heat as well in a racing application where the oil is going to be spending the vast majority of its life at high temperatures anyways.

    • @user-pg9cy1sd1p
      @user-pg9cy1sd1p 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What you say makes sense and the spec sheet supports it. The 5W30 has some marginal advantage over the 0W30 at high temperatures. That said, I did a track day with 0W30 on a 97 degree day with oil temperatures hitting 290 with no adverse effect. There were 25 minute sessions with the 290 temp only hit on the last part of the last lap. I sent the oil in for testing and there was no evidence of any issue or degradation of the oil. You'd never have known there was track (and autocross) events in the oil's history. The duration of the event was just too short. However, in the future using 5W30 would seem to be more wise.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@user-pg9cy1sd1p Thanks for sharing! I'm pretty impressed that a 0W30 oil did so well in that extreme heat, it is certainly a great oil. Sounds like the 5W30 or the 10W30 if you don't start it in very cold weather would be a better option in your application though. However, If you are regularly seeing oil temps that high, I would look into getting an oil cooler to keep the oil temp below 250. Even though Amsoil can handle that extreme heat for a short time, that doesn't mean that the whole engine can. Bearings, gaskets, seals, sensors, etc will all last longer with a lower oil temp (within reason of course).

    • @user-pg9cy1sd1p
      @user-pg9cy1sd1p 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@averyalexander2303 The car already has an oil cooler, but I need a bigger one! COTA can be a demanding track. I did not get an oil temp warning, but you are right that ideally oil temps need to stay cooler. I would install a larger oil cooler if I were doing this on any kind of regular basis. I do have 5W30 in there now...doesn't matter at all with so many events being cancelled.

    • @user-pg9cy1sd1p
      @user-pg9cy1sd1p 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@averyalexander2303 I should add- Not only did the 0W30 oil test fine, it came back as SEV0, which means minimal degradation. That was with 2200 miles on the oil. This included 3 track events and at least 25 autocross runs. I ran that same oil out to a full year and 5200 miles and it tested out at SEV2, which was due to a "slightly low" base number. I didn't do more track days, but lost count of total autocross runs...maybe ~90, The oil was good for further use, but I don't run oil for more than a year. So perhaps the 0W30 deserves more credit than we give it. Probably fine except for the more serious track rats out there. I went with the 5W30 on the current oil change to simply do a comparison, but this year isn't providing the right opportunities for that.

    I'm planning to use this 0W30 in my Toyota Echo for two reasons. 1. For cold Canadian winters, 0W30 will be easier on cold starts when not able to plug in the block heater. 2. My VVT variable valve timing is slightly retarded and perhaps this oil will help prevent deterioration of this system and provide slightly better acceleration!

      Costs the same. But for me I look at lowest and highest expected temps when choosing my oil, along with the age and wear on any particular engine. I look at the much lower NOACK Volatility of Amsoil Sig Series 10W-30 and prefer it in hot weather over the 0W-30 or 5W-30 due to least evaporation in really hot weather. I will sacrifice a minute performance or mileage hit to give me best engine protection and less evaporation. If I lived up North, I might use some 0W-30.

    Thanks for the awesome insight on Amsoil! I believe that Amsoil is new here in the Philippines since most of us can only order them online but I've learned about this brand for years now that's why I'm very excited to try Amsoil on my next oil change. Since you mentioned that the 2nd set of numbers are the one's to look out for, would it be ok to replace a 10w 50 for a 20w 50 blend? This is for a street bike application with mix city riding and long distance travel use. The manufacturer recommended oil viscosity blend for my bike is a 10w-50 blend but the closest Amsoil available here is a 20w-50 blend at the moment. There is a 10w-50 blend under Amsoil but its specifically formulated for dirtbikes. So is it ok to replace my oil with a 20w-50 blend rather than the manufacturer recommended 10w-50?

    • @tarquineous
      @tarquineous 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would use the 5w-50 made because Ford specifies it for the high performance Mustang V-8s. Should be outstanding for a street motorcycle or a dirt bike. 20w-50 would only slow the bike down and will not protect the engine any better. Probably less protection because of less flow.

    My US 2015 2.0 n/a focus Calls for 5w20 semi synthetic with 1yr/10k miles oil change interval, my friends 2015 focus with the exact same engine in Europe calls for synthetic 0w30 with 1yr/ 24k km. Is this just because of the politically correct federal fuel mileage standards here?

    • @Syntheticwarehouse
      @Syntheticwarehouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure but I but it's more due to oil availability or something with the VVT units.

    • @averyalexander2303
      @averyalexander2303 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My Civic is the same way. Here in America, it takes only 5W20 but in Japan or Europe it takes anything between 0W20 and 10W40. Same engine. The CAFE (corporate annual fuel economy) and emissions standards here in America do certainly play a large part in oil recommendations as it's seen by the manufacturers as a free way to get a tiny improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions. We are talking a fraction of 1%, but it's still a free improvement. Keep in mind that manufacturers don't care how long the engine lasts as long as it makes it through the warranty period. Never been to Europe, but from what I have read it can be hard to find 20W oils there.
      There are also differences in how they use their vehicles. As an example, towing capacities are much higher in Europe than in America and towing heavy with small cars is common there. I wouldn't be at all surprised if your Focus is rated to to tow 2K+ pounds there while here in America it is probably rated to tow nothing. And in Germany, driving down the Autobahn wide open surely heats the oil up more and likely requires a heavier oil than typical American use for acceptable longevity.
      So the simple answer is it's mostly political and possibly to a lesser extent because of differences in how the vehicle may be used. Feel free to use a 30W oil if you want, there's no reason it would work in Europe but not here.

      Agreed, I live down south and use their 10W30 all year. We rarely get very much below freezing and I have a block heater, so I'm not worried. As for performance or gas mileage differences between their 0W30, 5W30, and 10W30, they are functionally the same once the oil is above room temperature, which can be seen by the negligible differences in viscosity at 40, 100, and 150 degrees C. There's absolutely nothing to be gained from using a less heat tolerant 0W oil in a racing application and anyone who suggests that there is clearly is misinformed about oil specs.

    the bigger concern now seems to be with Direct injection engines. the deposites the crank case ventilation leaves on the valves.

    • @Syntheticwarehouse
      @Syntheticwarehouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - that is one of the main issue AMSOIL is trying to get public that theirs is the only one to use due to the lowest volatility. But the bigger issue is LSPI - Predetonation at the rings taking out the pistons when you use petroleum based "synthetics" like Castrol or Mobil's. The oil is detonating before the fuel enters the chamber due to it's nature. When OEM are forced by the EPA to re-tune or advance timing this will leave vehicles stranded if they don't meet the next API specification due out in late 2020 which we already do.

    Great video, my car requires 5w-40 European formula. Would 0w-40 Signature be an ok substitute?

      Yes. I do the same on my Audi. Although the european series had more zink. Like 50% more. But the signature will work
