      Thickness planing is quite easy for smaller boards. For removing large amounts from larger boards, a powered thickness planer is quite useful. In either case I prefer using my hand plane for jointing. It’s quick, easy, and works best for my kind of woodworking. Best regards.

    What prompted you to align the long grain of the bottom and ends. It makes perfect sense on avoiding cross grain for the handle load and dovetail stress from the tool load. It seems everyone aligns the sides and ends in a quick search.

    • @treebangham
      @treebangham  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob, that’s a very good question. Of the tool totes I’ve seen, the grain direction and joinery methods are quite varied. I chose my ends-to-bottom dovetail/grain orientation for the very reasons you mentioned. In practical use however, I don’t think the grain direction matters too much, since the amount of weight the box will hold is relatively small. Still, I prefer to design my projects with these things in mind. Thank you.

      Hello and thank you. Let me know how your project goes, send me questions if you have any. For me, the mockups are an essential part of the process. They always reveal things I didn’t see in my mechanical drawings. We’re in Allentown, Lehigh county.

      @@treebangham watched more of your videos today. Those are some sharp chisels! What brand of fenced router are you using? Were you self taught on sharpening or do you use a specific method. Great techniques, a true craftsman with a flare for design.

    • @treebangham
      @treebangham  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use the Veritas large router plane, very useful for the kind of woodworking I do. The optional fence is nice to have as well. The blue handled chisels are Irwin when they were made in Sheffield. I also have a few Lie Nielsen bevel edge socket chisels. My sharpening methods have evolved over the years, starting with one small oilstone and no jig, and now I use a Veritas Mk.II honing guide on sandpaper and finer grits of abrasive film, finishing on a strop. Thanks for the note.

    • @wayneprice6918
      @wayneprice6918 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Sharpening is so critical to fine woodworking. It took me many years to learn how to create a razor sharp chisel or plane iron. Once I figured that out , woodworking was so much more enjoyable. Nothing better than being able to make a plane sing or paring the perfect joint . Thanks for teaching the younger folks great techniques and letting them see what a truly sharp chisel should look like. When I was much younger I would watch Roy Underhill do wonderful work and know that there was a big difference between his sharp tools and my tools. I bought high quality steel.
      Buck brothers from before 1900, James Swan, Keen Kutter from the 1920's, Sargent VBM with their English steel from around 1910. I used a Makita slow speed horizontal wet grinder and DMT diamonds stones before I could make them shaving sharp and hold an edge. Once I could do that it was a whole new ballgame. Seeing your chisel brought me back to my 20's. When Roy retired I wondered who would carry on teaching the younger generation. You are doing a fine job.

    • @treebangham
      @treebangham  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Wayne. Yes, sharpening is a gateway skill in woodworking. Sharp tools are essential. Roy Underhill continues to be an inspiration to generations of woodworkers. I’m encouraged when I see so many people learning to make things. Great to see.

    Just started watching this series. So much good info in just the first video! I really enjoyed the formulaic approach to the ellipse; I was expecting the usual 'pull out a french curve and trace something that looks nice' ;)
    Question on the knife/chisel wall for cross-cutting the ends of the boards: I get that the goal is/was to eliminate any splintering or tearout on the back side. I'm used to seeing a knife line all the way around for that, and I get why you used the chisel to deepen the line all the way around... but I'm not sure I understand why you did the trough/trench on the back/under side of the board as well? I thought those were simply for guiding the saw while starting the cut? What purpose does it serve on the other side? Doesn't the knife/chisel line already stop the tearout?
    Thanks for the great video, and I'm looking forward to watching more!

    • @treebangham
      @treebangham  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Monte, I’m glad you enjoy my video. Yes, I enjoy making elliptical curves “to order”. Curves can get out of control very easily.
      You are correct, the “trench” on the back/under side doesn’t guide the saw. It’s not essential, it just assures me that my chisel wall is as deep as I want it to be.

    • @memilanuk
      @memilanuk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@treebangham a question on the ellipse: how do you determine the string length?

    • @treebangham
      @treebangham  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the video, at the 16:00 minutes point, I describe how to calculate the spacing for my thumb tacks on my layout. The string needs to be adjusted so it is taut when it is looped around both tacks and extended to the width dimension mark on my layout. I hope this helps.

    • @memilanuk
      @memilanuk ปีที่แล้ว

      @@treebangham "extended to the width dimension mark on my layout" that was the key part I was looking for. Didn't know if there was a formula to go with that as well, or just referencing off the lines and points drawn on the scrap material - it was a little hard to see all the marks real clearly in the video. But now knowing what I'm looking for, I found 'em ;)
