Casting an Ant Colony on a Log with Aluminum (Cast

- This fire ant colony was built partially around a dead log that was lying on the ground with about half of it buried below the natural ground surface. I had melted 31.1 lb for a larger cast nearby and had a decent amount leftover so I decided to use the excess to cast this smaller but potentially more interesting colony. The resulting cast has a very noticeable cylindrical cut-out area where the ants had built their colony tunnels around the log. It doesn’t appear as though they tunneled into the wood at all. The log was around 4 in (10 cm) in diameter.
I started digging on the log side of the cast (1:30) but quickly realized that the colony didn’t extend directly below the log and it would be better to start on the other side (2:17). In the end, it worked out well to have both sides dug out because the casted tunnels were tightly wrapped around the log and it gave me room to wiggle the cast free. I was starting to think I may have to get out the chainsaw. My digging strategy is usually to find the edge of the cast so that’s what I’m doing during the initial digging.
The finished cast (Anthill Art Cast #116) weighs 11.1 lb (5 kg), has a depth of 15 in (38 cm) and a maximum width of 11.5 in (29 cm).

Great to see that you're still doing your thing.Hope you've been well mate.Cheers!
This is definitely one of the more crazier ones, those ants were digging like crazy
He doesn't upload often, but when he does, it's really nice to watch.
I got a game add for building ant colonies before watching this LMAOOOOOO
Soo relaxing the sound of the molten aluminium and the digging. This video is soo relaxing to me.
Getting rid of these monsters one ant hill at a time!
This was the first kind of ASMR on the internet
This is a 2 in 1- oddly satisfying aluminium cast and oddly satisfying power washing.
And killing dangerous insects
love how serious this is during april 1. Ngl i was expecting something like you found rare earth ore or artifacts of the funny order :)
I do have an April Fools video idea I've been thinking about for years but may never do it. Always thought it would be funny to add a quick shot where I find a human skull or something and just toss it aside real quick or stage spilling aluminum on my foot.
@@AnthillArt maybe a business would be making these out of gold and platinum and selling them for incredibly high prices
How do you safely transport the molten aluminum to the anthill? Are they just in your backyard?
Yeah, they're all close to my house. I'm usually melting just a few feet from where I'm pouring and have a water hose on hand.
@@AnthillArt bit late but how long does this take and if you don’t mind me asking what is the cost of the aluminum I’ve always wanted to get a cast of an ant hill
@@MitchellC564 some times you can use old tire rims or piston heads
I’m not sure what the price is for pure aluminum though
And it can take upwards of an hour for the melting devices I have I’m not sure about his though
Hope this helps a little
Aluminium man is back!
Fascinating; I'd expected the ants to have burrowed into the log, and for it to be carbonized into charcoal by the molten metal. I was wrong on both counts!
Cool~
A treat to see you post again. The beauty of the casts is only enhanced by knowing you are eliminating a dangerous insect from a populated area. The dig was super satisfying the clean up gorgeous. Cheers man.
POV:tsunami but ants
Awww I was kinda hoping you'd keep the portion of the log that the nest was attached to. Still pretty nice!
that's an amazing sauna for the ants
One of these days you should cast one of those freakishly huge anthills. Y’know, the ones that are like 2 feet long.
The cast would be absolutely humongous, I've seen a few videos on big anthill casts
@@Lakhshamana please, link it I would love to see it.
@@JaceFaller th-cam.com/video/mTrGf11lB8E/w-d-xo.html
I think there's some other channels dealing with these
@@Lakhshamana thanks
Woah been awhile since I watched these, they still look rather amazing
How much weight in aluminum ingots was used for this piece?
@@tedtower9165 Maybe 20-ish pounds maybe? He had 31.1 lbs of that for a prior anthill but had left over (i subbed 11 lbs from 31.1 lbs to get the amount of aluminum)
I'm likely wrong since math and conversions are not my strong suit but it's my educated guess
I hate fire ants... If I could show you pictures of what they did to my 18 month old grand daughter you would understand. Good work looks beautiful.
I would've personally cut either end of the log and left it in the casting and used that as the anchor point to mount the nest in the correct orientation. But that's just my personal opinion.
Other than that, it came out extremely well.
Your videos are artistic 👌.
These make me unreasonably happy...
This is so amazing!! It looks like coral, I can see these in a fish tank as decoration.
Not much of a good idea unless it is coated first, aluminum could leak or "mix" into the water and cause some metal poisoning to the fish.
@@aunusuallylargecat1779 there's probably a different material you could use then
@@zillasaiyan1m274 yep! Something that is durable enough against water based corrosion would be preferable though I dont think there is that much metals that would look like aluminium and would be as expensive like it, the best choice would be to paint the metal/object with a hydrophobic material first before using it for the aquarium.
Wow this one was a toughie. Had to dig on both sides! Needless to say, the art came out beautifully! 👌 I’m sure the ants would agree 🐜 🐜 🐜
I kinda doubt they’d be too enthusiastic about this.
A strange, impressive, beautiful art that I never knew I needed
Welcome back! Seems like it's been way too long & I've missed these videos. This work is a different design then I'm used to seeing. Looks fantastic! Thanks for continuing your work. I thoroughly enjoy your videos. 👍❤️
Woke up to see that anthill posted. It's gonna be a good day
Watching death of thousands made your day Good??
@@sanketoiler6526 yes. All ants deserve death
Glad to hear from you.
You were gone for Soo long the ants had this beautiful cast waiting for you.
The one ant off to the side coming back to the colony must've been confused
thank you for making good videos i have been watching your videos since i was 10 years old and now i am 18 years old still watching your videos
Cool. Thanks for watching!
I didn't know you're back from youtube. I have your playlist saved.
Legends Never Die!
So Happy to see you doing more again!!! This one is stunning 😍 Amazing man. Kuddos ❤️
Glad to see your channel pop up again
Where do you get your molten aluminum?
I get ingots from Rotometals.com usually
@@AnthillArt oh… I’ll definitely check’em out! No how do you heat them up? Open flame?
@@Facet_5_CUT_8XM I need to do a tutorial one day, though my method isn't that great, but long story short: charcoal and a blower (hair dryer) in a metal can lined with refractory.
@@AnthillArt good to know!
What do you use to melt your aluminum?
Heat 😂
Charcoal furnace with a blower

Good to see you again
I want one of these in my house
Beautiful works of art. Seeing what ants do and having you display it is an awesome and grand experience. Thank you for your hard work and videos.
Man really hates ants. 🤣
these ants are invasive by federal law they must be killed on sight
Wow, that’s gorgeous! I often wonder how you got started with these? I doubt anyone else in the world has cast an ant hill. This one is nicest I have seen.
Something really entertaining and relaxing watching this kind of video.. like it's really freaking cool to see the intelligence of the ants. Scares the hell out of me if they where our size compared to them now. o.o
Wow the aluminums so shiny
Nice power washer. Should make cleaning a lot easier.
Wow! It is shocking at how extensive the nests are
Really cool! Thanks for sharing your work with us
alien architecture
Would look really cool if they used the inside of the log too. Still amazing work
And if you put that in a mold then melt down the aluminum you’ll have the worlds wackiest silly straw.
I find these videos very soothing
Missed these
Dude this art is pretty awesome, and I don't really subscribe to channels like this sometimes but yours is just a channel I must sub to. Good job mate!
Any thoughts about casting bronze or copper hills?
Yeah I want to see that too.
Thanks for another wonderful upload
that was in the Escape Route to look like a log
Fascinating ! Thank you 😊
Man i love these art
I think that is the best business opportunity for everyone should make lot of money by turning ants into fine art works & putting art works on eBay & museum's
Return of the king
I can't help but imagine as us as the ants and humans corresponding with some sort of greater being beyond our understanding, and how we are merely pests to them...
This looks incredible
A new recipe for the lidtards aluminium glazed ant mmm yummy yummy
Pretty freakin’ sweet!
He still uploads…
they remind me of coral.

Poor ants I feel bad for them
They're quite dangerous and a nuisance to other animals
They are an invasive species.

Yeah
Ants are so powerfull you need molten metal to complitly eradicate them
Always good to see an upload from you
WoW maybe u name every next cast?
That is pretty massive
