This single video got me into saltwater, about a year after I caught the coral bug 😁 Thanks for getting me into the hobby, it's been fun all the stuff Im learning along the way.
The hobby needs more of this mentality. If you go on reefcentral or another forum and ask about a budget nano build everyone scares the crap out of you until you decide not to join the hobby. You do NOT need to spend $1,000+ just to start up an entry level nano reef tank!!!!!!!
So glad I found this, as I plan to setup a 10 gallon reef tank, so it helps having someone walk you through the whole process. I am sure I will be referring back to this series many times over the next few months as I go about setting up my first nano reef tank.
These vids are so important in my opinion. Cost intimidation is what kept me from keeping a reef or any tank for the first 30 years of my life. Great vid!!
I did a 20g long. Found that the evaporation cosrantly threw off the salinity (about a gallon a week or 5% of the tank water) maybe lasted 6 months. After a couple months of keeping fish I tried cheap basic corals. And found I needed nutrient additives and between trying to maintain right calcium and right salinity.... I just gave up. Much harder than freshwater to maintain in my opinion and I really hated the salt crust build up at the water line.
Thank you for doing this! You inspired me to start my first tank...I think by doing this you are sure to open more minds to the possibilities of this rewarding hobby!
Thank you for your kind words Becky, I'm happy to hear that the videos played a small part in you joining the hobby! I hope others will find this video helpful as well
Wow nice beautiful tank.. i have saltwater reef tank , i think i can help you to setup your live rock , like my bonsai work zoa tree i have 12 gallon nano reef tank
I am making a 10 gallon frag quarantine tank. I got this same light since it will support sps. I made a spacer for the light inorder to mount it. I cut some egg crate. I cut two pieces, I took a dremmel and gound the thickness of one piece down by half and glued it to a full piece that I cut to get the right thickness for the spacer to hold the light. I also took the bracket and cut 2 sections off inorder to bring the light center to the tank.
You couldn't have posted this at a better time, man. Like most freshwater keepers, want to get into a reef tank, for corals alone (not that there isn't cool fish, but I can get that fix on my other tanks). Aaaand like most of us fresh water guys, i have a 10 gallon setting under my big tank doing nothing. Definitely following along for the journey, possibly getting mine going also. Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge my friend. 🍻👊
Thanks for your kind words man, especially coming from someone who's production value and content is so high! I do hope people would find this series useful as well
I follow a lot of saltwater folks but you are my favorite. You give a great presentation and just show a lot of things I like. Today I set up exactly the same setup you did for a nano tank at my office. Can’t wait to see how it goes!!!!?
Thanks for showing that mistake. Just mentioning it wouldn’t of had as much of an impact as seeing does. Nothing worse than a leaking tank but glad it was before you had it established. Great vid!
I dont know for that piece of wood (I am a GM at a hardware store, used to own LFS) But it might. The biggest problem I see with tanks is usually from the cheapest addition-used to kill me to see people set up a 10k$ reef and go to home depot to save money on sand.
Good to know, better safe than sorry! When you say home depot sand, do you mean Southdown Playsand back in the days? Those were the go-tos before they got discontinued!
No this guy was using sandblasting silica. There are time tested things like dow flake that have had extensive testing by randy holmes farley and others that are safe-but many of the cost cutters people pull out of the air could benefit from deeper thought.
The best budget tank is a second hand unwanted tank bought in summer, As this is a winter hobbies in the UK for most people. I got a 240L tank, stand, filter ,heaters x 2, sand, ornaments, fish, live plants, lid lights, air pump. Various accessories for £150 on Ebay. Keep your eye out!
Literally eighteen seconds into this video and I'm already subscribing and liking every video. Great job, keep up the incredible work! Your passion and dedication doesn't go unnoticed.
Super excited about this whole series. Been wanting to get into the aquascaping world but definitely seemed way to expensive to venture into for a beginner. Thanks for giving me the first kind of foot into this imaginative world!
You are exactly right I have a 20 gallon left over from my freshwater with a fluval aquaclear 70 with heater the only thing I need is the light and some sand
Looking forward to this series. I had the same build, but I used a smaller hang on unit and the flow was intense! Interested to see how this comes along
Thank you for making a series for beginners! Approximately a year ago I watched one of your videos, I was so inspired by your tanks that I decided to have one myself! To this day I have a thriving reef with softies, lps, and sps! Don’t forget the frogspawn 😜
My first nano tank was a 5 gallon with 1 clown fish (Clarke) and a Condy Anemone and some zoas. I used a hang on the back also with believe it or not a 60 W blue light bulb on a timer, it worked but a long time to get rid of the algae. I think the LED will work better. I had that clownfish for 6 years she was very large and aggressive when I got rid of her about 3 years ago.
I like the idea of upping the filtration for water movement' I was planing on doing a 10 gallon myself I was kinda dreading getting another power head as I just got rid of one I had stupid me! Lol
Awesome video man!! Very helpful for those crunched for money who want to get started in reefing without taking the chance on spending a lot and losing a lot due to inexperience!
Inappropriate Reefer nothing to be embarrassed about. Looking back, it's like "duh that makes sense". I would not have thought about it in the moment. Build is going to be epic.
Appreciate the video man! Currently have a 75 gal but am looking to down size as a I know I’ll need something more mobile the next couple years. Looking forward to modeling my next tank after this series.
I just bought a oceanic biocube 29 that's been running for 7 years with like 40-50 lbs of live rock and a while bunch of other goodies and a current light bar for $100 off Craigslist. I think it was a good deal but I'm new to saltwater tanks.
I appreciate the full disclosure of that opps as well as the ideal. I haven't thought of a nano tank but with all of the information you are posted I am starting to think of creating a nano tank. Thanks for the information!
Did sort of the same, I had problems with some dusty oily film on the surface so I switched to a powerfilter with surface skimming and it was solved... There is a video on my channel showing it...
Since it’s a 10 gallon it doesn’t need a huge amount of support and u could remove the rim with a razor blade and if your nervous u could add a small custom brace out of glass or acrylic glass would be better
Nice video. You are definitaly one of the impulsive reef hobbyist. And while I like that about you. I would love to see you patienatly put all your time in one large tank. 😀
Planning on doing a nano, so I managed to come across a hagen HG fluval flex aquarium 9 gal for $50 which comes with everything including a heater. Only thing that needs to be upgraded is the lighting may get the hipagero and a small compact pump with a 300-400 GPU. That bring the budget nano to close to $135, the cost of the all in one tank, new lighting and a pump. What do you think?
I love seeing nano builds. And a budget one is all the better. I have a 75 gallon softy tank but am setting up a nano Lps Sps tank in my wife's office. Just have to say just because the tank is small that doesn't mean the price will be. I went with a IM 14g peninsula , running a AI prime Hd. I did have to upgrade the pump (stock one is so noise) to a sicce syncora 1.0. Just picked up a Smart ATO Micro try try to keep water levels stable. I do still need to get a wave pump of some kind (any recommendations?). Even with all the extras this tank has the cost is not with the setup it is with the livestock. You have some amazing tanks and a lot of useful information. Thanks.
Dude love the walk through on the equipment 4 the setup. I had the same thing happened to me 2 times, glass cracking. It sucks but as hobbyists we are 4 ever learning. Can’t wait to 👀the rest of the videos.
I started w a 5 gallon tank and I had that same light it was doing pretty good w zoas and other softies but I upgraded to a 20 long tank so I got me a bigger light
That light! I just ordered one because it looks like awesome value for money! I don’t even have a tank to put it on! But sorry - Amazon.com wouldn’t let me ship it to my US address so I couldn’t use your link to buy it. Had to get it through amazon.ca. ☹️ I’m gonna LOVE this series! 👍🏻👍🏻
LOL, I set 10 gallon tank about 170 $ budget two weeks ago😂 And I actually made a little skimmer (hidden from view almost). Actually it will be an sps system (I know I'm crazy). OMG, sorry for your tank... (That's why I bought a alta 20 light, it doesn't need that wood)
I had a Aquaclear 30 and this tank but made rimless and no powhead. I have no corals yet sinces its new. My first fish died. I now realize it was because I filled the tank to the top and the water was gently flowing into the tank, so not enough oxygen and flow! I only did that for 2 days but long enough! This tank cracked when my hubby slid the filter so we had a aqueon ascend in the box that we got on clearance, quickly switched out before we flooded the kitchen! Anyway, my ascend had a high back, so the water falls a long way. My hubby got all paranoid and thought the fish died from maining 7.8 to 7.9 ph! He goes and gets an AC 50 and we have since bought a pair of clownfish and hooked up a korelia nano power head! This is overkill right? So much flow that caribsea figi pink is flying around. Even b4 the aqua 50 is was flying around, not a lot but enough to make water look cloudy! My question is this. should I just use the 30, and powerhead that is 250 gph. nano korelia It says it is for a 10 to 15 gallon. Or should I keep the 50 and no powerhead? I thought I need the room from the 50 but I realized that chemi pure elite has phosphate remover so I wont need to add phosguard more than likely, so I have sufficient room in the 30 and that is really overkill if i have a powerhead! My fish love playing in the current but I am planning on a yellow clown goby after watching yours and milehigh reefers youtubes! lol So maybe to strong for him! Or any smaller fish! I love ur videos and you are my fave! I almost moved to Glen burnie when I was little! My dad ais from Baltimore so spent my summer and xmas vacations there and so many memories. I went back 3 times in the last 7 years and reconnected with my 56 cousins! What part of Maryland are you from?
Sorry... even with the acrylic insert, I would still worry about that light cantilevered against the glass! 😬 Can't wait to see the rest of the build... I love my down and dirty 10 gallon.
This is literally my current setup! My first reef tank too. Only difference is that I'm running a powerhead because I have an AC30 instead of the 70, sadly. Looking forward to the entire series to see what someone experienced would do with the same circumstances. I'm curious as to how the light on full brightness on both spectrums will work out. Right now my light is max blue and on the lower end with the white, should I be raising that slowly?
Love the video, very informative, BUT, background music too loud at times I couldn’t understand what you were saying but due to good content I’m subbing and liking!
Mine is less than 3 gallons. But good video. But with the way AIO tanks are you could get one setup cheaper. There are some for 60 or 70 and if small you can find a good par38 cheap. Or use same light and only be at 120 to 130. Also I small jar with air pump and weekly water changes work well to. Good video for setting up. Very low budget and takes care of everything mechanical wise. Save up and even through on a small skimmer.
#10gallonreefer !!!! First tank and still running after 8 months :) 1 Firefish blue leg hermits tons of zoas acros hammer gsp and I used mostly the same equipment as this build
CorruptLP. I am doing 50% water change every 10 days now instead 25% every 2 weeks. and 1 day black out every Monday mostly. That way I slow down progress on the algae, but I can’t eliminate completely.
Victor Alanis I built it out of a 2.5 gallon tank, plexi glass, 1/2 inch tubing, and an old circulation pump. The thing that made me get rid of my sump is when the power went out the tubing, since it didn’t have a check valve or anything it kept siphoning water and it over flowed the sump. I wouldn’t recommend doing what I did. Go with a canister filter or hang on back or even a professional built sump rated for your tank.
About to start this myself, me and my gf are letting our 10.4 and 4.14 gallon tanks cycle. I hope we are as successful as you. But we do not have friends that are into this at all any tips on meeting people in the hobby?
You told us about your mistake, before we repeated it, and that's why I'm subscribing. When you treat your viewers with respect, you deserve it.

Well thank god I used a pvc block. But you put that fire out well and did not lose emotional control. Nice play Shakespeare.
About a day away from following along with this build, I’m super excited for it! :)
Good luck
I'm looking the thumbnail, watchning the video, this video will be popular...
Man you are so talented, it's incredible.
Thanks for your kind words man, especially coming from someone who's production value and content is so high! I do hope people would find this series useful as well
More nano aquariums needed on TH-cam!

I always recommend nicrew lights. Super cheap and very efficient
Got a 10 gallon AIO from EBay for $70 shipped. It’s made by Waterbox and is built very well. Can’t wait to set it up. It’s been sitting for months.
9:24 “I didn’t actually listen” 😂😂😂😂
I have done this before and it is very rewarding seeing the corals grow in there.
as soon as I saw wood- i said "uh oh" Not just the swelling-but the release of chemicals used in drying.
Did not know they use chemical during the drying process, thank you for the heads up! 😱 Constantly learning
I dont know for that piece of wood (I am a GM at a hardware store, used to own LFS) But it might. The biggest problem I see with tanks is usually from the cheapest addition-used to kill me to see people set up a 10k$ reef and go to home depot to save money on sand.

Literally eighteen seconds into this video and I'm already subscribing and liking every video. Great job, keep up the incredible work! Your passion and dedication doesn't go unnoticed.
I laughed at the turtle comment. That's EXACTLY how I got my ten gallon! ...thank's Brian (sorry Blastoise R.I.P.)!
I love when people say its pricy but once you get it going. The frags of the coral you grow will help you along the way
Super excited about this whole series. Been wanting to get into the aquascaping world but definitely seemed way to expensive to venture into for a beginner. Thanks for giving me the first kind of foot into this imaginative world!

Can not believe what happened to the tank! Lol nuts. Looking forward to the tank build. Well done. Sally is strong! lol
I was a bit embarrassed and dreaded re-doing the build, but thankfully the new one was up and running in 3 days time! =b
Inappropriate Reefer nothing to be embarrassed about. Looking back, it's like "duh that makes sense". I would not have thought about it in the moment. Build is going to be epic.
@@InappropriateReefer could you not have just put the wood block on the outside of the tank?

I set one up yesterday to go in my bedroom, also used the aquaknight light
I like budget setups👍
I used some egg crate/light diffuser to act as filler for my light mount.
In for the series.
Awesome bro, budget nano reef project👍
Part 1 =2 👍👍looking forward to the rest
Did sort of the same, I had problems with some dusty oily film on the surface so I switched to a powerfilter with surface skimming and it was solved... There is a video on my channel showing it...
You could 3d print a mount to set the light clamp back behind the rim of the glass as far as you need :)
I recently just set up a 10g reef tank for my desk at work . Only using a Aquaclear 40 , but interested in seeing the Hob.mod that you did to the 70.
Same I'm temporarily using a 110 as a refugium on my 75
Since it’s a 10 gallon it doesn’t need a huge amount of support and u could remove the rim with a razor blade and if your nervous u could add a small custom brace out of glass or acrylic glass would be better
My first aquarium was like that but using the sun light because I had no money. I am moved to remember those days.
Nice video. You are definitaly one of the impulsive reef hobbyist. And while I like that about you. I would love to see you patienatly put all your time in one large tank. 😀

My favorite Reefer!
I bought a 20 gallon long, but I bought a fluval aqua clear 50.. will that be ok? And also what about for a budget lighting ?
BTW, when I talk to you about turning my 10g into a small reef, I was going to de-rim mine.
Do you think a aqua clear 30 would provide enough filtration?
I love seeing nano builds. And a budget one is all the better. I have a 75 gallon softy tank but am setting up a nano Lps Sps tank in my wife's office. Just have to say just because the tank is small that doesn't mean the price will be. I went with a IM 14g peninsula , running a AI prime Hd. Do you think this light would work on a 15 gallon standard tank. Was planning to do your exact build but add som marinepure gems in the ac70.

Love this build. I’m thinking about a 29 gal budget build tbh.
Is it okay the metal mount touches the water? Any rust issues
Is aqua knight bracket made from aluminium/metal? Would it cause problem to reef tank?
It’s lighting my tank now ! 💪🏽
It’s a Nuvo 10 fusion.
I have a hipagero led as well but the bracket is to long for my ten gallon ...how did you do it
LOL, I set 10 gallon tank about 170 $ budget two weeks ago😂 And I actually made a little skimmer (hidden from view almost). Actually it will be an sps system (I know I'm crazy).
OMG, sorry for your tank... (That's why I bought a alta 20 light, it doesn't need that wood)

im going to try two of them lights looks good to me
What tank would you recommend getting that’s affordable, all in one mini nano tank?
My nano set up ran me 80 bucks , but it’s only 3 gallon. Good build
U can remove the top trim safely, there’s plenty of of TH-cam videos on that.
You can get a fluval evo for like 90 or 160 depending on size...
Sorry... even with the acrylic insert, I would still worry about that light cantilevered against the glass! 😬 Can't wait to see the rest of the build... I love my down and dirty 10 gallon.
Dude great vid thanks for making it, only things is you didn't talk about the water. Did you buy premixed water or did you treat tap water?
I just cut the black trim in that section never had a problem with it
Where’s part 2 what u put in the filter ect. I’m new got everything from old tank want to see what else is needed
Coming out next Sunday! Just need the media basket it comes with and a tube of aquarium silicon
AC110 on my 10gallon Aqueon and it does all the flow for a reef tank.
Cant wait for part 2.
I just ordered a couple of those lights. I’m glad I watched this video!

CorruptLP. Hey pal, I have same set up, with little variant. But I have issue with black algae. What do you use on the filter to help that?

Cuz I love FishTanks what’s up! I have the same issue ugh I lowered my photo period but it didn’t help much
CorruptLP. I am doing 50% water change every 10 days now instead 25% every 2 weeks. and 1 day black out every Monday mostly. That way I slow down progress on the algae, but I can’t eliminate completely.
This is basically my nano reef lol just add a 2.5 gallon sump and thats my tank :p great video as always!
Cmharper 50 how did you add the 2.5 sump
Victor Alanis I built it out of a 2.5 gallon tank, plexi glass, 1/2 inch tubing, and an old circulation pump. The thing that made me get rid of my sump is when the power went out the tubing, since it didn’t have a check valve or anything it kept siphoning water and it over flowed the sump. I wouldn’t recommend doing what I did. Go with a canister filter or hang on back or even a professional built sump rated for your tank.
how about 3D printed PLA for the lamp spacer? is that safe for the water?
About to start this myself, me and my gf are letting our 10.4 and 4.14 gallon tanks cycle. I hope we are as successful as you. But we do not have friends that are into this at all any tips on meeting people in the hobby?
Do you have a 6.8 gallon project ?!
