I'm dating myself but over 20yrs ago I did a similar thing, I had a 30 gallon and 10 gallon reef tanks. When I went to college about 2hrs away from home, I took a 6gal desktop tank and turned it into a reef tank. I also had a clownfish that I couldn't bear to part with, I took him everywhere I moved from winter break at the dorms to home and back all the way through college. I would strap the tank in the front seat of my civic (with half the water) and he would ride shotgun with no issues. Back then we didn't really have the concept of pico tanks, nano reef was just becoming a thing. I'd recommend a covered hood if you can, will help control salt creep and reduce evaporation.
For college and compact living situations I like how you are using store bought distilled as opposed to RODI system. You can probably budget a single 2.5 gal water change every week. As much as vertebrates enhance the reef experience they also shorten water change intervals to ~1.5 weeks.
I been using the same kind of filter fluvial 50 on my 5 gallon nano, I put a bag of chemi-pure blue and a poly pad on top. Ive had excellent results tanks been running 9 months. I have been testing the water every two weeks and a one gallon water change weekly along with the poly pad. Oh I was told to feed every other day with filter off.
Great video. I saw you removed the back panel and replaced with a hang on filter. Was it difficult to cut out the panel? And how often do you need to top off with the lid off? Thanks again for great content
well according to my fantastic knowledge about reef tanks…😂… the one thing i can’t stress enough is topping off your tank. lips help decrease the evaporation so you may not run into many problems. but other than that you’re correct in doing water changes every week. the plus side to smaller tanks like this one is that when you have any sort of problem, 90% of the time a water change will do the trick! love the tank tho! my 40g reef has undergone so many changes it’s hard to keep up. seeing hobbyists around the same age and in the same boat as me helps keep me motivated. 😂 good luck at college mate!!
Ya I’ve heard that topping off a tank this size is really important and I have been keeping up with that. I might get an auto top off one of these days just so I don’t have to manually do it so often. Hope keeping your 40g gets a little easier but it’s part of the hobby I guess😂 Good luck!
I have a 10 gallon saltwater tank that I just started. I used distilled water for all the water in the tank and I plan to use it for the whole time I own the tank. Is that ok? I really want this to work out.
@@BarrysAquarium Wow! That’s so awesome! Great career, I also am planning on one day working in health care too after college. But first I have to survive Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry. 😂
Overtime with fish waste and fish food ect, form nitrates and nitrites which can Crete ammonia. So the water change is to remove that extra nutrients, just do 25-40% water change every 1-2 weeks.
@@Dingy113 It's the other way around: detritus break into ammonia, the bacteria will consume it transforming into nitrites (which is still toxic) and finally nitrates (safe to a certain level).
The clowns (both male) will fight until one establishes dominance and becomes the female. This is why they will fight now and probably indefinitely if you keep separating them. Best bet is to leave them together and let them sort out who is boss :)

HOW many this tank is ?
Is the filter system provided with the tank not adequate for a saltwater setup?
Love your videos dude.
What’s the exact name of this tank??
Looks great. When I move I wanted to get 1 40ish tank for my living & wanted a smaller one for a desk or my room.
This 5 gal seems perfect for that.

Thank you! You should definitely start a pico tank, they’re awesome!

Do you not like the light that came with it?
I have a 10 gallon saltwater tank that I just started. I used distilled water for all the water in the tank and I plan to use it for the whole time I own the tank. Is that ok? I really want this to work out.
Where did you buy this?
Great video, can I ask what kind of filter that is?
Hi, Where did you get the lights? Thanks.
I have this same tank and I didn’t know that this is even possible! That’s so awesome and this looks great!

Hey, I’ve been looking into saltwater and have no clue how water changes work, can you give some tips ?

I think the fish are trying to breed? I’m not sure I’ve never seen breeding behavior in Clownfish
It definitely could be but I’ve never seen clownfish breeding behavior either.
Cool lil tank
Just subbed :D
Nice tank ! Can we get a link ? 😀
hope ur doing well barrington
GSP eh? Are you concerned about it taking over? How are you going to manage it on the main rock?
What filter do you have on the tank. I have the same tank and am using the built in filtration and it isn’t working too well.
An aquaclear 30 from Amazon
@@BarrysAquarium have you been happy with how it has performed on the tank?
Ya it’s surprisingly quiet and makes good water movement
@@BarrysAquarium does it clear up the water good?
Ya it makes the water pretty clear but it just depends on what type of media you put in it
R.i.p 😢miss you
