    I just bought my first Slick and I'm blown away. I own 10 guitars, 2 of which are premium (Gibson, and PRS), and the others which are all mid range guitars around the 1K mark. The Slick is incredible, and shooting way above it's weight class. I like it better than some of my guitars around the 1K price range (CA). The stripped down concept is amazing, I adore the lack of plastic poly finish, the wood feels alive, and I was SHOCKED by the quality of the fretwork. The frets are my fav size (6505), polished and level, and the neck shape is perfect for me (I have the SL59), and the pickups are absolutely insane. The tuning keys and brass hardware are quality. The sand blasted body. I'm shocked at the price point on this guitar.

    Re; Slick Guitar ownership. I briefly owned a Slick SL59. There were certain things I liked about it like the overall vibe of the instrument and its cost. However, there were other things I wasn't too crazy about 1) The neck profile. To me it feels like a "shred" neck, it was very thin, and its shoulder was very sharp feeling so the transition between the side of the neck and the fretboard was uncomfortable. 2) The neck profile. If you like "shred" neck profiles, you'll probably like this. However, you like baseball bat necks, it's going to take some getting used to. Keep in mind, Earl isn't a tall dude so it probably works out well for him. 3) The fretwork was... eesh. 4) The OEM pickup was supposed to be a P90 style pickup but to my ears, it sounded way more like a Tele bridge pickup so I replaced it. 5) Because the bridge is recessed into the body it's kind of a pain to replace the strings but there are other bridges that are a bigger pain in the neck. 6) This is a sub $300 guitar so don't expect it to be as refined as a top-dollar guitar but, with a little TLC, it's nice for the price. 7) After watching this video I find myself wanting an SL52. This time around I'll spend the money and have someone dress the frets, put a better rollover on the shoulder of the fretboard, and replace the OEM nut for something nicer. 8) My takeaway is if you do buy a Slick you should budget about an additional $100 to the purchase price and have a guitar tech go over it, I think you'll be happier with the results.

      I dont think it matters when its 2022 and you can get a great set of pickups nowadays for $20.
      Which is ridiculous when you think about it. Even boutique one that are tailored to your specs are now under $80 for a set.

      I was gonna say I feel these pickups sound harsh. Seems like some budget ceramic magnet humbuckers. Many of these budget brands will focus on neck and body then cheap out on the electronics and pickups.
      Then again it's hard to tell from a youtube video + how it's mic'd or EQing done for the video.

    The most appealing thing about this guitar (other than looks) is the fact that it has a satin neck like a bolt-on. So hard to find single-cut guitars where the neck isn't glossy, and I *hate* glossy necks.

    I have a Slick SL60, You're 100% right about the inspiration factor. I have always played with a pick, wanted something with P90's got it and immediately started playing blues riffs sans pick. That guitar just makes me want to play without a pick and inspires me to feel the instrument. It's not like fighting a Fender, it's different. I'm so impressed with it. Great Video

      Same here, I've had an SL60 for almost 2 years now and it is in heavy rotation. I bought it based on some glowing TH-cam reviews and the fact that I buy GFS parts all the time. The P90s are top quality and that 1 tone knob can take you from clean to nasty dirt - very impressive.

    • @OMOTM
      @OMOTM 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JackSon-yn4hm I put it at about 8 pounds. It has a nice, solid feel - not too heavy and not too light. Light to me would be an SG and heavy would be a non-weight relived LP. It's one of those guitars that feels just about right and is nice that if it gets a nick or two it would actually look better. :-)

    One problem with the Slick guitars is with the bridge. Specifically, how the bridge is set in a routed cavity to allow the action to be set so low. If you pause the video at the 3:15 time mark and look closely you can see it. Look how far down the holes for the strings sit, tucked tightly behind the pickup. To re-string the guitar, or set the intonation, you have to raise the bridge. That means you have to adjust the action with each string change. I almost ordered one of the LP Specials with P90s until this was mentioned in the comments of a different video. Fore warned is fore armed.

    • @AuntAlnico4
      @AuntAlnico4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My 2019 Gibson Les Paul special double cut has the same bridge decked down but not mounted in a recessed hole and the p90 pickups sit further away from the bridge so all I have to do is curl the end of the string around a Bic lighter or pen in order to hook the string through the hole on the wrap around bridge and it works for me so I don't see why it can't work out for you !

  • @texanfournow

    I have two Slick SL52 guitars in sunburst and "black ash" (which is natural with black filler pigment to create a stripe look). Great guitars. The pups really do have character as mentioned. I also have a SL57 (s-style) in surf green and a SL60 in yellow (like an LP Special with two P90s--now those are hot pups!). I had a SL51 (t-style) in butterscotch (which turned out to be orange) that I gave to a young guy at work who was starting a band. Of all of them, the SL60 with those great P90s is my favorite.
    And I believe all Slick guitars are described as "aged" but it is a very light relic job, nothing over-the-top. I am not a fan of relic finishes but the GFS treatment is actually tasteful.
    There are a lot of new "cheap" guitars on the market now which basically do their best to imitate various Fender and Gibson guitars, and some of them do a really good job. But I do think that Slick guitars are different. They feel solid and sound great, and can be had at a very reasonable price. I feel no need to "mod" any of them. They are truly their "own thing."
    Also, be aware that GFS occasionally has sales or coupons that can shave 10-15% off an already-low price.

    I was looking at their website and the parts list is impressive. Fiber bobbins, nickel base and covers. They even tell you what wire was used in the pickups. It says graphite nut. It looks like a real tough gig guitar that you wouldn't worry about getting banged around. Everyone wants a $5000 Gibson, but who wants to take that to a bar or club to get beat up. This Slick might be the guitar to take to work and save your nice guitar for the studio.

    A few years ago, I bought an SL54T. Each time I played it for the first few days, my left-hand finger tips would be jet black. I don't know if it was from a chemical reaction to the frets, or if it was fretboard dye coming off, but it was concerning. Also, the headstock string alignment was slightly off from alignment with the neck, which looked like sloppy manufacturing, in that the tuning post holes were drilled slightly off. A couple of the nut slots were cut on a slight angle apparently to compensate for this. The tuners were complete junk; they would slip when turning them, and no adjustment would help. GF said I would have to return the guitar; they wouldn't let me return the tuners in exchange for new ones. The volume pot was junk. I will say that the pickup sounded very good, the frets were good, and the neck bowed properly, requiring only a little relief, with no fretting out.

    It's a tank. Weighs a ton. The neck feels good although it does feel a bit like a toothpick sticking out of a boulder as it's kind of shallow. Feels like the Squire necks with the smooth, satin finish. I like the frets a lot. Over all it sounds really good. Not a fan of the headstock paddle shape thing going on. The Slick logo feels a little cheesy but I guess he was calling himself that before it was gauche.

    I've got one of these from one when they were first released. I don't see the color I've got for sale anymore. It's a solid-ish aged-white... kind of mary-kay-ish, really nice. These are SOLID guitars, like you said. It's the perfect Apocalypse guitar - You can jam out, then crack a zombie/mutant skull with it, and go right back to jamming, no problem. I'm pretty sure mine is significantly heavier than yours, it's easily the heaviest guitar I own.
    My ONLY criticism is that the sunken bridge, while cool, makes it impossible to change strings without resetting your bridge height. If you're super picky about that, it will give you fits. My solution is to use the most durable coated strings I can find, to limit string changes + carefully measuring the bridge height and the number of turns to lift it enough to restring and try to reverse that when done. It's hardly exact but still makes it quicker to get it back to where you had it prior.
    All said, though, I love these guitars and if they had come out 10m years ago, I'd probably have at least 1 of each model.

    Is it just me or does the headstock of this remind people of the early KH Spider les paul style guitar?

    I have a Slick Tele. It's awesome! The only knock I have is it weighs about the same as a boat anchor ⚓

    Max, I love your reviews, your playing is amazing, and I really appreciate the fact that you review guitars other than Gibson, Fender, and PRS. The only problem is that you can make a broomstick with baling wire sound awesome. Nevertheless, please keep up the good work. BTW, Firefly guitars can thank you for my purchase of their 338. Now I’m eyeing their Explorer style guitar, also thanks to your review.

    I am a big fan of these, really good bang for the buck and i wouldnt hesitate to recommend one to an intermediate rock player. Especially punk. The cases are awesome too.

    These indeed are phenomenal guitars. My only complaint is that these were about $100 less than the present asking price just a couple of years ago. I understand why the prices have short up. I also understand that I don’t have to be happy about it. lol
    Most folks don’t realize that they’ve heard Earl play. He was on so many records in the ‘70s & 80s. Session players are rarely credited for the projects they work on and the only documentation is often their own portfolio that they use to land more gigs by promoting their business as a session player.

    I also think you need to reference all guitars with a smell. And weigh them all in kilometers.

    I’ve been looking for a cheap-Strat for that neck-tone I can’t get out of the Telecaster. The Slick is really tempting … I’ve seen a lot of good reviews. Plus, he sat-in when Cheap Trick played my bachelor-party.
