    I own the Fender Mustang one, I was shocked at how good it sounds when I got it, I couldn't believe I was getting those types of tones from a little headphone amp, well worth the money IMO.

    • @JitinMisra
      @JitinMisra ปีที่แล้ว

      Are guitar headphone amp, stereo?

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JitinMisra Yes, you get stereo effects on the mustang at least. Very pleasant. It's also a pretty high quality BT headphone amp in general although you can only EQ from the device you're streaming from. I was shocked how nice it sounded and how well it can drive even higher impedance headphones. With a pair of Senn HD599 (50 ohms) I cannot even turn the volume up halfway - and those are open backs! Which is a good thing, too, since it means more battery life as well. I would imagine (but cannot test that, perhaps someone else can chime in) that it's powerful enough to drive 250ohms closed backs, not to mention the usual 32ohms many/most overear headphones.

    Judging by the sounds we got in this video, sure you have tweak ability but the nux sounded like what you would expect from something like this where as the fender actually sounded like an amp. Just from what I heard in this video.

  • @jakollee
    @jakollee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +102

    A lot of commenters are mentioning the ease of plug-and-play with the Fender and not having to use an app on a separate device as with the Nu-x. But even with the Nu-x, once you tweak your "Clean, Overdrive and Distortion" channels on the app and get the sounds you like, you can simply toggle through those 3 channels easily with the button on the device, as you play alone or play along to a backing track on youtube via bluetooth. Just pointing this out.

    • @jlunddk
      @jlunddk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you please explain how to connect the NuX to a computer so I can play along with some backing tracks from youtube?

    • @jakollee
      @jakollee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jlunddk I’m not sure you can do it with a computer. The TH-cam backing tracks have to be sent to the Nu-x by Bluetooth. If you have a smart phone or tablet, you go to settings, select Bluetooth, and add the Nu-x Mighty Plug. Then you’ll be able to hear backing tracks from TH-cam (played on your phone or tablet) as well as your guitar, through headphones plugged into the Nu-x. Good luck.

    • @jakollee
      @jakollee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Stealther that’s true, the master vol knob on the Fender is a big plus. With the Nu-x it’s always helpful to have you phone or tablet nearby to make adjustments. But I also find it frustrating that fie some of the presets on the Fender, you can’t adjust delay time or delay mix.

  • @caravan-o
    @caravan-o ปีที่แล้ว +25

    If you're just comparing presets the nu-x is likely to come off worse. This is because the Fender is designed to be preset, and Fender have put a lot of work into getting the defaults to sound great. The nu-x gives you more scope to create your own tones, with the downside that the default presets are not necessarily great.
    The conclusion is spot on, though

    I would go with the Fender Micro Mustang. The Fender just sounded more open and bigger with the overdrive, distortion and chorus, delay, tremolo and reverb. The clean tones sounded more similar to me. I’m getting into playing guitar and I think these are great devices to really help you practice and jam privately. Great video, RJ!!!!!🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd also put the lack of an app and endless tweaking as a bonus for the Fender. Every minute you spend tweaking tones is a minute you're stealing from your practice.
      I did think the overdriven lead tone had a nicer flow and squash on the NUX, but in all honesty Fender does also have a five EQ preset bank where you can quickly get the bias you're looking for. Also having the unit not "tie-in"/compress your playing that much helps you realize and correct sloppiness, which is one of the main points of practicing stuff.

    To me, the raw tones of the fender were a bit more open, present and realistic compared to the Nux which seemed slightly compressed, but not by much, and makes me wonder if just a little custom tweaking of the Nux might make it sound just as good at a lower price with way more options.

    The NuX may have had more features but the Fender sounded far better. Now you might be able to get in the app and tweak the tones with the NuX to improve the sound, but what I was hearing on the video wasn’t even close. The Fender had a much richer sound. The NuX sounded very hollow and tinny, especially on the clean settings.

    • @arnold90
      @arnold90 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This little Fender blew the NuX out of the water on any setting. On OD the NuX sounds hollow while the Fender stayed sharp and crispy. On distortion the NuX felt like I'm listening to a 240p sample. Wish Fender made app support to their amp, to allow customization. but I guess it will happen in future release. Probably keeping some tricks in their sleeve, like all tech companies today.

    I bought the Fender a couple of weeks ago on the strength of reviews and I'm knocked out by the sheer quality of the sound. Very clean, no hiss or noise. Plus the audio from Bluetooth is excellent too. Personally I was looking for something simple and this fits the bill. I already waste far too much time fiddling with sound and fx with on my rig or in Logic/Garageband.
    Listening to the comarison in this video, for me it's no contest. The Fender wins hands down on quality of sound, especially the fx which sounded a bit 'dirty' to me. Plus sitting there fiddling with the app is just a big no from me. The Fender I plug in, turn on the music, play the guitar (sounds a bit like Timothy Leary!) Job done.

    I have both, like both, am keeping both! Good comparison, though I think it would've been even better if you had captioned the specific amp models, effects, etc. while playing (instead of just giving the device you're using and writing, "Overdrive," or "Distortion." I agree the volume knob on the Fender is a big plus! But I'm not crazy about having to toggle through so many presets to get to the one I want. Took me a moment or two to figure out that the first time you press the little toggles on the Fender, it just "wakes it up" without advancing to the next preset. I think it's easier to get a nice edge-of-breakup cleanish rhythm sound on the Fender, but the overdrive sounds on the Nu-x are pretty awesome! Both have pluses and minues, IMO. There's a lot of pluses and minuses to each of these devices. And now after a price hike, the Fender one is twice the price of the NuX. Makes me wonder about other options in this space.

    listening to these on my Audiophile setup for the most accurate experience and there is no comparison. The Fender sounds closer more accurate and detailed and not "muddy" at all, the NUX sounds good and maybe does need some "tweeking" to match the tonality of the fender but it wont fix the width/sound stage and clarity issues it has that the Fender doesn't. The NUX just sounds far away but not in a good wide sound stage way just muffled and unclear, regardless of the FX choice.

    Great comparison RJ. I think out of these 2 I would pick the Fender for ease of use and the volume knob being on the unit itself. Plus I do think the Fender sounds were a little better than the Nux.

    Agree with most that Fender sounded better overall, but the Nux did some things better than the fender like that lead tone was really nice or you called it "distortion" . As a fender micro ownder id still conder the nux just because the price is nice, cheaper then a pedal, and its an audio interface.

    As a bass player, the NU>X is a no-brainer for me, as it has two bass settings and the Fender has none. I didn't even know about it until your video automatically came up after I started investigating the Donner Basement headphone amp. (By the way, you're an impressive guitarist.) What I'm curious about though is how you recorded the sounds for this video. Did you use a line-in, or run it through a full-size amp or put a pair of headphones over the mic you recorded this video with? I'm trying to find out how much "oomph" I can get with a headphone app when playing virtually/in cyberspace with my bandmates.

    I number of the Fender presets seemed to have some kind of stereo effect, while the NUX ones were mono - at least that's the impression I got. I suppose I could re-listen with headphones to be sure. I think that's why people liked the Fender more, having a difference in each channel makes the sound more lively.
    I already bought the NUX but it hasn't arrived yet.

    I liked the NUX's cleans much better, they sounded more full and alive. Didn't like it's overdrive and distortion that much though. May have to order one and try it out.

  • @TonyvdGraaf
    @TonyvdGraaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like the Fender more. For it's purpose, just a quick practise/play along with backing tracks or youtube vids, I like the simplicity of the Fender. No need for tweaking things on a phone, plug it in, select a combination of amps and effects..GO! If I want to tweak I'll grab my Line 6 Firehawk which app looks very similar to the one on the NUX, maybe NUX is related to Line 6?

      I have the Positive Grid Spark, which has far more than the Nuk and if you need battery power, the Spark Mini is out, with all the same app features as the full size. I can't see me ever being in a situation where I couldn't take one of those because "big ass instrument." It's not exactly even a 1×12 cab. The only downside is the price difference. To me, the Fender is much simpler for short and simple practice sessions. My use would be to get away from dealing with my phone.

    I would go for the Fender Mustang Micro; it sounds cleaner to me and less muffled. When I knew that I would be moving from my house to an apartment, I gave my fender and amp to my son. I will ask him to give it back and get the Fender headphone amp. And thanks for the great video.

    To me the NuX distortion sounds were better and more articulate but the clean sounds on the fender sounded more stereo and pleasant, the NuX sounded mono. As I am more into clean sounds these days I will probably go with the Fender. Also I will most likely use this with headphones so that stereo effect will be better in that scenario too. I wonder if that stereo perception will carry over into the computer interface. My biggest problem with the Fender Mustang is that many online dealers (AMS, Sweetwater etc.) are sold out and expect more soon.

  • @Alan_Page

    I spent a lot of time googling and didn't see anything about the Nux. I still want them to make one designed to work with an app with more processing and more options. I was using an iRig with the amplitube app and while it's cumbersome and there are definite sound quality issues, the options for dozens of amps, cabinets, distortion, overdrive, compression, effects, where you can dial the effects with knobs like real pedals, etc, would be extremely fun on a better product.
    I just bought the Mustang and it's so nice just plugging it in the guitar and playing, but messing with colored lights, and being so limited in what you can do, (the gain even on the high-gain amps isn't where I want it, there's no actual adjustment for distortion, compression, overdrive, (just different amp choices), you can't adjust the effects like the rate on the delay, etc.), isn't ideal.
    I found one sound for high gain distortion that I like, and I spent the last three nights of my three day weekend smoking my medical cannabis vape and standing in my living room practicing for 5-6 hours straight and not feeling like it was work at all, just having a blast.

    My preference is for the Fender. I'm not a fan of phone app tweaking, and also like the usb C connectivity Fender has. I don't need a lot of fancy FX if I'm just playing into headphones, so a couple clicks on the Fender makes sense to me. The sounds are different but both good. Fender wins this one.

      Mustang Micro's Marshall 1956 Super Lead doesn't need any tweaking anyhow. The Twin with a touch of spring reverb doesn't either.

    So glad to see this video! It would’ve been great to have before I bought, but I was too impatient. I got the Nux because I wanted to be able to tweak a very specific sound and save it to a preset for whatever I’m working up at the time. But after watching this, I might pick up the Fender one too for when I just want to noodle rather than practice something specific. Because it seemed to sound a little better.

      I too had the Nu-x first and when I saw the Fender I thought I would prefer that. Initially, I did like the Fender better, but now I find I'm returning to the Nu-x more often. Once I've gotten a little more familiar with how to tweak and save sounds on the Nu-x, I'm appreciating its versatility more. Still like the Fender though, especially for cleans and edge-of-breakup tones.
