      The funny thing about the YYH opening is that I like the endings even better, dubbed ending 1 of YYH is still my favorite anime ending ever, doing homework at my grandma's house while YYH comes on at like 5pm on Toonami and outside goes from daytime to night time during the course of an episode and then that soothing ass ending comes on, that's just a vibe that I will never experience again man

      We still have Beyblade in the US at least toy wise. Ironically I was listening to the Beyblade V-Force's full JP opening (Off the Chains) a few days ago as it's a rap song by artists I knew, Verbal of M-Flo and Giorgio of Delighted Mint. Always wondered why it wasn't rewritten in English as the artists speak it plus rap in anime was peak 00s in the US. It's a bop.
      Funny that a few years later Teriyaki Boyz (they did that Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift song) which features Verbal collabed with Kanye (I know, I know hush) popularizing Bape outside Japan so it kinda seems like a big missed opportunity, I don't know for what but something lol. Small world.

    I'm from Germany and I can transfer everything you said to the German Anime. At least in terms of vibes. Here in Germany, in most cases, the Japanese and English songs have simply been translated. But these have always been sung with so much love that one could not help but love them. Listen to all the anime songs nowadays at work in the gas station and always get praise from all the nostalgic customers that I recall their childhood in the store. That's the heart of these songs and it's just nice to lose yourself in these vibes every now and then.🎶🎵💜

      Growing up in latin america we only had two options: straight up Japanese intro (eg. Rurouni Kenshin) and in series music (it still baffles me to this day that they replaced Braveheart for the rap in the US as the digievolution song); or a faithful translation of the song in Spanish (all of DB, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, and much more).
      It was only the 4Kids properties that had original songs (YuGiOh, Medabots, et al). Once broadband came, piracy really took off so people just got anime there, less and less networks chose to buy anime besides big staples like Naruto. Spanish intros became a lost art.
      Really give them a listen if you know Spanish. The Digimon Adventure Intro, Sakura Cardcaptor, and the Shaman King intros are great places to start.

    For me hearing dubbed anime openings is like revisiting a familiar/favourite food. It's a wave of nostalgia powerful enough to momentarily transport me back to a time where all that I wanted in my life was to be the protagonist of my favourite show. Whenever Bakugan would come on I'd slip a card on my shoulder and place my Drago on my shoulder pretending to be transported to this world and act out the events of the show. The LatAm dubs are actually kinda special in that they mostly sticked close to the originals when it came to music and just about everything.

    • @pablocasas5906

      @@Luchux177 the LatAm dubs made by Intertrack were excellent, shows like DB, Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk, Digimon Adventure and Sakura Cardcaptor were translated pretty faithfully from the original Japanese and the dub voices were perfectly casted
      There were some dubs which were made with the U.S. version as a base like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Kirby, but since they were dubbed by actors who worked in plenty of anime they still did a great job. And in Pokémon's case, since the 4Kids version was already a gag dub, they adapted some of the jokes in order to appeal more to the LatAm public, the Team Rocket voice actors ad-libbed tons of great jokes

    German here 👋 I feel everything you said. Dubbed OPs hold a special place in my heart and I still hear them frequently. They are just this good.
    In Germany the majority of anime openings were done by one company called "Toyco" and they did an outstanding job. We mostly got German versions of the Japanese openings and they were amazing (Digimon, Detective Conan, Dragon Ball & One Piece all being fantastic examples). Sometimes they made original openings and they're absolute bangers as well (One Piece OP 1, Inuyasha OP 1&2, Dragon Ball OP 1 etc.). A good bunch of the 4Kids ones also received German versions over here (like Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh) and they are absolutely iconic. I listened to them countless times both in German and in English.
    Wanna give a shoutout to the German version of "Pokémon World" (called "Pokémon Welt") from Movie 2, it's only loosly based on the English version and it straight up sounds like Persona 3 or 4 song. It's amazing!

    Mew Mew Power's opening was how I found Tokyo Mew Mew.
    And if it wasn't for the Glitter Force ops, I wouldn't have also discovered Precure.
    But I'm sure there are plenty of ops/eds originally in English, like AoT, Vinland Saga and Banana Fish.

    I started off a true magical girl obsessed weeb. Tokyo Mew Mew, Ojamajo Doremi and Sailor Moon are classics and these days I blast the Japanese ops. But the English ops hold a very special place in my heart. ESPECIALLY when they’d add little music videos at the end of TMM and Ojamajo Doremi.

    Telling my friends to face off and spin the metal, as we face off for an epic battle will never be old. A lot of my friends and I just don't even know the actual OPs very well for a lot of the shows we grew up on just because the English Openings were just that iconic and engrained in us. It's wild to think, due to how wide spread it is and how technology is, that there is a generation of new kids, who might get into anime in the streaming age (with a wider access to subbed shows of all kinds and not just ones airing at our local kids TV channels), and not get to experience the very dubious, yet also kind of awesome sweep of frequent dubbed openings.

    • @DaDualityofMan
      @DaDualityofMan ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I never actually heard of the Japanese openings for stuff like Pokemon and Yugi Oh, the kids today are lucky though, they don't have to worry about ever missing an episode, like me missing the newest episode of Naruto on Toonami because my mom dragged me to a family party that night lol, still I'm glad to grow up in the era that I did.

    I can't find a source, but I believe the first Japanese opening to Astro Boy only had instrumental music, and it was the English dub that added lyrics, which inspired the Japanese to do the same.

    • @mikuboy
      @mikuboy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this is true! in the astro boy essays by Frederik L. Schodt (someone who did a lot of the translations for Osamu Tezuka's work and knew him personally), he writes on page 81 "Ladd made one other change in the first English pilot film that eventually affected the Japanese version, too. He kept composer Tatsuo Takai's wonderful opening instrumental melody, but had NBC hire an American, Don Rockwell, to create lyrics, which were recorded by a group of energetic young school children singing 'crowds will cheer you, you're a hero, as you go, go, go astro boy!' This was deemed extremely successful, so much so that Tezuka later did the same thing for the Japanese series"

    When I started watching Dragon Ball (dubbed) during quarantine for the first time the OP immediately blew me away. It was so damn catchy. It really set the tone of what I was going to watch; a mystical journey for dragon balls(with friends along the wayyyy). I think what also helped was that it was dubbed. Whenever you listen to an anime OP you're mainly just vibin to the song since you can't understand anything, but knowing what's being sung gives meaning to the song. We sort of miss out of the extra meaning and context that the OP gives us when we don't understand. Example being how SpyxFamily's first OP creates an analogy of the "misfit family" to a bag of "mixed nuts."

    Honestly, it's absolutely interesting to see what imapct the anime intros have in the other languages. Since I grew up in Germany, I also grew up with the German intros. I think it's quite cool that some of the German ones have a strong resemblence to the Japanese originals. I also find that some German intros are better than the Japanese or English ones, but maybe that's just my view because I grew up with the language. Nevertheless it is always nice to listen to the intros in any language and get lost in the music. 💚🎵

    Smile Bomb Eng Dub has a special spot in my heart. It was Saturday night and my mom had gone to the club again. Normally I'd watch Rocky and Bulwinkle and whatever else they showed on Cartoon Network late at night. However, this night they did their "all kids out of the pool" bump, followed by the amazing visuals and vocals of Yu Yu Hakusho's opening. Inuyasha came on afterwards and while I don't think Change the World is better than Smile Bomb, the ending song My Will and visuals are just as dear to me.

    Awesome video, love the love and perspective. I do think it's worth noting though that there are commercial forces surrounding Japanese OPs, too. The record labels for the OPs and EDs are (to my knowledge) usually one of the companies funding the show. The song may not be there to sell the show or the toys, but the show has that big long OP to sell the artist and the CD.

I sure do remember seeing Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon on the TV, and even watching Pokemon tapes, but it was more of my sister and brother's gen, I believe. Also, due to my native language, I've never really been confronted to English OPs. Despite that, I remember hearing the Pokemon French dub (it indeed exists) and woaw was it a banger, same with Yu-Gi-Oh of course. Aside from those two, I don't think I had any of those experiences, even the Naruto's was the original, and it feels even older.
