Oh I just found your channel like 30 minutes ago and couldn't quite put a finger on the accent. Now that you mentioned that you're from Jamaica, that clarifies it for me. I am applying to come to the States for my PhD and while a lot of what you said was directed at undergrads, I still found a few tips to be helpful as well. Thanks for the great content.
This does make me feel scared about the fact that my grades weren't really strong until 5th form up. You had all A's throughout school which is cool and I'm proud but then I remember that I'm up against such smart talented people like you and its hard for the imposter syndrome to not kick in. My schools grading system is different ( 80% = A ) and I'm not sure if they translate it to their system. The extracurricular involvement and essay is important too but sometimes when you see such smart people it's hard to not focus on your numbers versus their numbers.
hey! imposter syndrome is reallllll. And there is almost always going to be people who have better grades than you! there are so many people in my classes now who are way "smarter" than me from a grades standpoint.....just remember that grades are just numbers; they don't define you, nor are they a true sign of your intelligence. but unfortunately, for college apps they are important....I'd say control what you can : put ALOT of effort into your essays and extra curriculars and ensure you have good recommenders.... do whatever you can to make up for any weaknesses you think your grades might reveal

Hi Lindsay, You are so nice. May I ask you some quations. Most of U. accepted you offer merit and need base scholarship. How muct You recieved scholarship each U.
Sorry if I'm a bit late but I wanted to know if your universities looked at all your grades from 7-13 or if it was from 10-13 because I've heard that US schools only look at your last 4 years of high school. I wanted to know because my form 7- to my first term form 9 grades are not the best.
Hi, i'm a little concerned about how my application may turn out, because as an example, you, you got many good grades, and extracurriculars, also you have good grades in standardized exams, and you got accepted to many universitys but at the same time rejected to others, so I'm concerned because if you have all of those, there should be more students just like you, straight A, and as an international student I have fewer than a citizen, and only have my high school grades (we don't use gpa) and a toelf ibt, that's all I got, and I'm not sure if I need something else or how to get it, I'm confused with lots of things, and makes me think or feel like I'm not getting accepted into the places I'd like to go to, or that I may not receive a scholarship or some kind of financial help, I don't know what you think my possibilities are, let me know, I'd like you to share your opinion about that with me... Thanks for the vids, I found them very helpful, you're doing an amazing job 🤍
Hi Stephanie! Thanks for sharing! And I’m going to be honest, the applications process is extremely competitive. There are 4 key components to your application - essays, grades, extra curricular and recommendations. For top schools, all of those across the board need to be great, especially if you want a scholarship. Re extra curriculars, it could be anything that shows community involvement! You could start a book drive at your school, or start a club or volunteer with a charity! You could email a few local companies that you might be interested in and ask for an internship and even offer to work for free. The point is, you have to be creating opportunities for yourself. However, I would suggest looking at your grades and finding schools you think you would be a competitive applicant at. Just make sure to apply to schools at all levels! To find schools, search by SAT score or average GPA. So for example schools with average SATs being 1450+, you know that those want straight A students who have a strong application. Schools with average SAT being 1300, then you don’t have to be a straight A student and have perfect recommendations and extracurriculars... and then look for schools with average SAT of 1200 etc. Also, remember that it’s your job to advocate for yourself on your application- so find things about you that are interesting and things you’ve done (it could be small, like sharing your lunch money with another student for example), and write about that! You have the power to make yourself look good!!! I hope this helps :)
Hey we don’t really use GPA in Jamaica either, but it was on my transcript anyways. You’d be surprised, your school may actually calculate your GPA and you don’t know ; I would request an official transcript before concluding that there’s no GPA. If you guys actually don’t have GPAs then I’m sure there’s a work a round - admissions officers know kids are coming from places all over w/ different processes. I would email common app or the admissions office of a particular school if a gpa is required and my school didn’t produce one to know what to do.
Always Serene Honestly no. Admissions is kinda complicated. For extremely selective schools like MIT or Caltech, I may just not have been competitive enough... or, maybe some schools wouldn’t have been able to give me aid/scholarships because they already spent their budget, or maybe they were accepting more Trinidadians than Jamaicans that year 🤷🏽♀️. There are so many things that go into whether you get in or not - schools have quotas to meet, and targets to reach with their incoming class so it’s not as simple and unbiased as it should be. The process is very unfair.

In Trinidad we don't use GPA, is it really necessary?
