Gex 2 in Japan is called Spin Tail. It's available on the Archive website for PS1 Redumps. Gex 3 never released in JP.

Also some US versions of Japanese games were made harder due to rental stores being a thing here. See almost every Konami game from the late eighties to early nineties.

Personal Story Crash 3 story: I live in Brazil and the version of Crash 3 I had was the japanese one and I thought it was the official version untill much time later to discover that Crash wasn't a japanese IP. so Tiny has a high pitch voice in English while he has a Deep voice in japanese, that was my main complain about the "english translation" in my opinion

It's funny you mention Oddworld, considering it had some interesting localization changes to in-game art and hand models. Crazy enough, some of the changes were in regards to a horrific murder.
Future Cop LAPD was also different in Japan.
They gave it all a more anime-styled look and even added small portraits whenever someone speaks.
I do honestly prefer the JP version of that game.
Does it play any differently? I kinda loved Future Cop LAPD even though I knew it had issues, but co-op and that weird early MOBA game mode with the AI with a 'tude had me hooked for a looong time
Speaking of 3D-sickness and stuff I can't source, I've heard that Japanese people actually have a higher chance to develop motion sickness (or have the traits that results in motion sickness to a higher statistical degree than westerners, I dunno how it works I'm QA not a doctor), which is why they make changes like that. Is it true? Listen bud- idfk. Just throwing out possibilities here.
Also I kinda wish Crash 4 could've sold better because now I kinda want a new Pandemonium game inspired by Crash 4's multi-timeline shenanigans where Argus and Nikki like, botch a spell and have to team up with Clam and Guppy to fix the multiverse. Could be cool, man.

Seeing the Waulbaum font in your vids is like suddenly running into an old pal at the grocery store.
A lot of games are made easier in Japan or have native versions that are easier (see Contra Hard Corps) because of the US game rental market. Game rentals are a breach of copyright law in Japan because rental companies would buy one legit copy and make copies to rent out, so they changed the laws around video games in particular.

Oh man. Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere would have had you spinning. What in Japan was originally a 2 disc anime existential crisis about fighter pilots in the future with multiple branching story paths and a dope soundtrack in was turned into a single disc shell of it’s former self.
At least the US version kept the dope music, but Namco really did the US dirty with that game.

I've only ever played the JP Spyro games, and this video finally cleared up why English Spyro gameplay videos seemed so... off.
a funny thing I find fascinating with some PS1 games is that when ported from NTSC to PAL regions, they redo the english dub for it, such as Ape Escape and Gex
They sometimes reduce lines in animated movies with region specific VAs. The first Cars movie had Jeremy Clarkson in the UK as the truck I think and some other famous dude in North America

PS1 games with passwords only are a real enigma to me, why are they like that? Like man you're not gonna pay to add sram to the cartridge, the player pays for the memory card, why not do it? Passwords are probably a bigger pain to implement than writing shit to a file.
There was also Unholy War, which got the same completely different anime treatment that Pandemonium got. You should check it out 😀
EDIT: The Japanese version is called Majokko Daisakusen Little Witching Mischiefs... Yeah it has gone from a post-apocalyptic fighting arena game to a cutesy anime fighting arena game
Isn't that a separate game tho? I seen some anime style game with witches using Unholy War assets but what I heard it was a standalone game, not a port.
Japanese versions of games were generally easier than their Western counterparts because of the rental store market. The Japanese rental market was far more regulated than America's going back to the early 1980s, and as such, marketing teams didn't have to worry about the distinct possibility of someone experiencing the entire game upon checking it out from Blockbuster without ever actually purchasing it. Eventually, that just evolved into cultural taste. After all, it took Americans until Final Fantasy VII to fully accept the idea of a game where sticky ninja gamer reflexes and high scores don't necessarily translate to a better video game.
I'm kinda confused - were the japanese rental games just "demos"? Or were the rental windows shorter? I'm not quite up on why the rental market would affect game development in such a big way

Video games are among the most expensive media at retail, so a "try before you buy" model works at the publisher's expense. I still can't get over how sleek the jp versions of the box artwork were. Medievil looks cute af. Just look at that skeley boi 11:47. How can you not love him? The art just screams "adventure" but with a cutie3.14 skeley boi.
Japan Spyro 1 has a cheat that you can use after completing the game (idk if you need to beat it 100%) that enables the US camera. They knew the camera idea for the JP version was terrible. Also, if you have a pocketstation (basically a memory card with a clock and buttons) it adds a new collectable to the game, Dragonfly eggs, that you can collect to unlock minigames to play in the pocketstation.
You forgot, Crash 2 and I believe 3 actually makes crash jump lower, the fmv cutscenses, Crash Carnival and that weird creppy Dingodile art and the fact they added a extra "taunt" to Koala Kong in the polar minigames, that only the CPU can do, weird. Oh and playable Fake Crash.

Yes. Do more of these. Your video essays are extremely satisfying and are obviously the product of you ensuring you convey your complete thoughts on a given topic in a way that's both comprehensive and entertaining. This video is just the light version of that where you can just talk more candidly talk about a topic that doesn't necessarily demand the level of scrutiny and polish demonstrated in your longer form videos, and allows for your thoughts on a subject to roam around a little more and take more of your natural mannerisms and humor with them. Both formats have their place, and I think ass-centric Tomb Raider and Japanese horse games belong here.

as far as I know Gex 3 has no Japanese version at all and I own a Japanese Gex 2 (called "Spin Tail" over there) and it is the same game but the voicelines are all replaced and now reference Japanese pop culture things I don't understand.
