How about the cyanide mostly present in the peels? How is that controlled so as not to harm animals that consume them? Unless the peels do not contain cyanide or cyanide is harmless to animals.

The poison is hydrogen cyanide. It can be rendered ineffective through drying in the sun or by heating.
