That car makes all its power under 4K rpm and redlines at 6400, there’s no point in the manual because of the low torque range. It’s completely flat over 5K. You can do manual mode but it sucks

Mazda would've had to develop an entirely new manual transmission to mate to the AWD system. Not a good business decision to spend money to manufacture a new unit to satisfy 3% of buyers on one model of one car. That's not a profitable option, especially for a small company like Mazda who doesn't have that money to risk. We should be happy we still get the Miata.

This car, IMO, is the perfect balance between a daily driver and a fun weekend car. I have the sedan version and couldn’t be happier with the performance and handling. My only issue is with some of the cosmetic differences between mine vs the hatch (I really wanted a hatchback but couldn’t find one for sale at the time I purchased), but other than that, I love it and would buy it again.

My camry took a shit 2 months before the turbo 3s were released but I couldn't have my coworker constantly bring me to and from work for those 2 months but the crazy thing is, I was working at a Mazda dealership at the time. So I was gonna get employee discount and my original plan was to hold until turbos were released but my camry died as soon as I got into my work parking lot on a Tuesday, got 250 for it and got non-turbo hatch the Thursday because I had no way to make it the last 2 months

Hp is 300+ and torque around 380ish ,upper power band also greatly improves. 0-60 under 5 seconds and I keep the factory drivability and refined feel. Only paid 32k for the non premium model , a bargain for the price in overall quality drivability and feel. I chose this car because the aesthetics are more inline with a mature adult and not a young racerboy (looking at you Honda). The Bose system is amazing as well. What held Mazda back from creating another MS3 isn't the "childish" thing, it's the need for a manual tranny that could reliably handle the 2.5t power, and the negative ROI involved. Everything else is easy, as it was for the MX-5 - Bilstein, Brembo, BBS, Recaro. The rear suspension is a non-issue (see the Fiesta ST for proof). I had a 2012 MS3 with some tuning putting out about 300hp. I also installed a solid engine mount to avoid torque steer. It did really help with torque steer, but the result was liquifying the front tires. The MS3 was an utterly ridiculous car, and that is why it was my favorite car that I have owned. It was visceral, garage tune-able, looked good, handled great, sounded great, and was reasonable priced. With consumer vehicles trending toward battery power and automatic transmissions, we will probably never see another car like the MS3. Not sure progress is always a good thing......

Car and Driver tested the new Mazda 3 and got a 5.6 sec 0-60 and I think 13.4 sec through the 1/4 mile. That actually seems about right for the car’s power to weight ratio and being AWD. No, not “fast” by modern standards but, they did also test a bone stock 20’ GLI and got the same numbers in a car that allegedly only has 228 hp and 258 lb ft of torque in a FWD configuration. Then again, VW tends to rate hp at the wheels so it’s probably more like 255-260 hp and 280 torque. Plus it has a dual clutch tranny so that alone is a hefty advantage over the 6 speed auto in the Mazda.

I have a 23 tpp hatch, at least its not impossible to bring it up to a spiritual successor to the Mazdaspeed 3, you can put stiffer suspension in, Meatier tires, and give it a pretty good boost in power, it's unfortunate to know have a manual but it is a pretty good manual mode, it holds your gears incredibly well and there's plenty of other sports cars that don't have a manual, I've never seen a tuned one get tracked but when people show their 0-60s they can easily get it down to a 4.9 which is crazy because thats type R territory, Really the biggest thing holding it back is the lack of an LSD, maybe in a few years ill try to being it into a custom shop and give it a new transfer case and put an LSD in there but which would be a pain but that's really the hardest part, Its pretty disappointing that they didn't do all this on the base model but I think mazda knew they were laying the groundwork for somebody crazy enough to take the effort to give the the car the tools it needs to really be a force to be reckend with on the track.

  • @outrunyt

Worth noting, Mazda doesn't actually use fake engine noise. That noise you're hearing is coming from the engine bay through a tube they use to convey audio to the cabin. It's a nice non-offensive way of adding more growl to the experience when you put your foot down but that tube can also be removed if it's too much for you.
Also, Mazda please for the love of God give this car a manual and more aggressive seats. I own a '22 Turbo Hatch and would forgive everything else I dislike about the car if I just wasn't sliding around so much and could make the transmission actually shift to where I can use that wacky torque band.

I have a Fiesta ST that I’ve been thinking about trading in. A few days ago I test drove a Premium Hatchback with the manual…
And yes, this car is just begging for a performance variant! It could be so so good, Mazda is really dropping the ball here!
The platform is surprisingly good, and the shift feel from manual/clutch was possibly the best of anything I’ve test driven recently. The 2.5 NA engine actually had decent, linear pull through most of the rev range and didn’t feel underpowered at all for what the car is, seemed faster than what the 0-60 indicates. Enough oomph to be fun, and it felt good accelerating out of corners. It isn’t rev-happy and high strung like a proper hot hatch engine, but competent and i assume the engine would have good reliability/durability.
But, the handling is what really let me down… I really really had to tone it down on curves and exit ramps compared to what I’m used to, and then the brakes didn’t have nearly the response I’m used to. and the steering felt a little vague compared to other cars I’ve driven recently.
TBH, I think My ex-gfs fiesta se handled better… hell, I think my 03 focus hatchback allowed me to carry more speed through the curves on the backroads.
The tires obviously sucked, and changing them would surely help. The limits feel pretty low with this rubber, and vague enough that you don’t really want to try and find them. But beyond that I still felt there was a little too much bounce and body roll to feel safe when trying to have fun. It just didn’t feel properly planted for some reason.
So really, just putting a sports tuned suspension, performance tires, and some appearance kit on the existing 6-speed manual hatchback would be enough for me. I guess that would put it in a weird price range competitively, but it would be a damn good car.

I reduced my time in autocross by ten seconds on the first day of running my M3HTPP, carving up everything but 'Vettes and purpose built racers. If you want to improve performance, put your money where your mouth is. I love that I can take this car to the track, run hard, and drive it home in refined comfort.

I have a 21 mazda3 turbo hatch and I don't think it can take on the mazdaspeed3 sadly.
      Mazda3 2.5T 250hp/320torq
      MazdaSpeed3 263hp/280torq
      Hopefully these numbers are right.
From the line, yeah mazda3 2.5T is gonna win the pull probably with the torque when it's stock vs stock but that's it. Speed3 has 155 top speed, usually breaks 400hp aftermarket. Mazda3 2.5T is limited at 133 top speed (very few have it past 300hp with CS, JB4) and would get demolished top end because of that. Fortunately 99.9% of the time you won't even need to go that fast in either and this new mazda3 is incredible looking plus it's a fantastic daily/road trip vehicle. I think both are great and if the Mazda3 wasn't limited so much tuning wise, it would be more of a competition. If in the off chance you come by a stock speed3 but you are jb4 and intake equipped on your 3, you could probably gap it for awhile but top end is top end and the speed3 rarely will be owned by people wanting to keep it stock.

I have the CX-30 Turbo, which is built on the same platform and shared the drivetrain and most of the interior, and it is a blast to drive. Sure it is jacked up to give it some ground clearance, but I think the hot CUV is the new hot hatch in terms of where the market has gone. I agree on the manual, tires, and deeper bolstering. Those three things would make for a far sportier experience and aggressive rubber may make up enough of the difference so that an adjustable suspension is unnecessary. Perhaps another way to go would be to add an automated, dual clutch manual with something like 8 speeds. That would improve mileage as well as acceleration and driver involvement (ie fun) and that is something Mazda can easily do. Tires, how about Potenza Sport tires on 19 inch rims, go up and out one size and drop one in sidewall width, so 225/35 R19’s. Also, to give it that zoom zoom look and separate it from the rest of the Mazda 3’s, make the options aero package standard. That would be quite a nice package and fairly upscale. Oh for giggles a story, when I tried out my CX-30 turbo I got behind a Porsche Macan, probably a base model. They hammered it pretty hard on an interstate on ramp and the little CX-30 stayed glued to the Porsches tail. When we got on interstate, I let it go, but for that little bit of niche performance, I got great big grin on my face as I knew I found my car.

The direction Mazda's going is somewhat burning my ass. They took a look at their motorsports heritage and their loyal enthusiast fanbase and said "Go fuck yourselves, we're a LUXURY brand now! :D". I wouldn't be so irate if they made some luxury products and kept their performance ones, but they tried to do a COMPLETE 180. It's frankly very cynical of them-- it's like they think the average person wouldn't remember the mazdas of the past (you know, the ford era).
They must be fucking kicking themselves now that hot hatches are booming again-- Veloster N, Civic type R, GTI and Golf R and now the Corolla GR.

Agreed on some things Mazda needs to do. And it's been said numerous times in this comment section. They need to get rid of this crap 6 speed Auto and make a competitive 8-10 speed auto/dct and give the enthusiasts an available manual. They need to revisit how they tuned this engine. Give it a better turbo and up the power to over 300hp. It's a 2.5L. The Kia K5GT and Hyundai Sonata N-Line also use a 2.5L turbo and are making 290hp and 311 torque on paper. They are both heavier but are faster than the Mazda 3 Hatch Turbo. They both have the better wet 8 speed transmission and have all the bells and whistles. On top of that a much better warranty. While they are not in the same class they are roughly the same price. And the only downside is that the latter don't have AWD. What besides brand loyalty and willful ignorance to better cars is helping sell this car?

I think, as Mazda moves to the premium segment, they think the Mazdaspeed/MPS cars are a bit to "childish" for their image. And we also have the issue with a higher strung car beeing aimed at an audience that won't be able to afford it. The Turbo is a North America only model. And in Europe we only get the non turbo 2.0 or the Skyactive-X. A fully loaded Skyactive X AWD is close to 40 000 eurodollarpounds. A MPS version with uprated suspension, that 2.5T (that's not on the European market at all)... Would 50 000 be enough? Mazda is allready paying hefty CO2 fees on their cars. You get an i30 N for 40K. That is a far more tacky car than the 3 though. But still...
If they skip the Euro/rest of the world market (save on homoligation costs for the drivetrain) - does it sell enough to justify it's existence on the NA market?

I waited and hoped that one day we would see a refined and updated mazdaspeed 3 that was fun, sporty and practical. Unfortunately, this isn't it. Mazda's new design philosophy since 2016ish is to be all grown up, and less "zoom zoom" from their 80s-2000s cars. This new varient lacks all of mazda's sportiness, and looks like something my nana would buy. It's really sad to see Mazda stray so far from their sports car day roots, as i've also owned 2 mx5's (NA and ND) and an rx7. I would never buy a turbo in a Auto, you just lose all the fun and might as well just buy something cheap on fuel if you want a Auto. I owned a Mazda 3 MPS 2010 Luxuary (which is a mazda 3 speed in the US) and it was one of the best cars I owned. Owned it for 5 years and never had a problem, its just the ks were getting on a bit and wanted something a little newer. I looked around for ages and ended up getting a Focus ST and first thing I noticed was the lack of power in the ST, but I ended up getting it tuned and now its pretty comparable and im pretty happy with it, but still miss my MPS and would have bought the newer MPS If they ever made one.
I think its a bit gutless by Mazda not to release a new MPS, even companies like Hyundai have done the N models and Mazda had a perfect opportunity to release a newer and better one since they had a great platform with the mps already and I know so many people who loved the MPS, such a shame.

I love what Mazda has done with these new generation of turbo charged cars! So much so that I sold my Mazdaspeed6 and got the 2018 Mazda6 Grand Touring Reserve! However… Mazda is way too damn conservative with their tire choices!!! The original tires on these cars are total CRAP! They do not let these cars perform how they should! The Mazda3 Turbo is held back in acceleration, cornering and braking simply because they chose the wrong tires. Just bump up the width a tad, better stiffer sidewall and stickier compound changes everything you noted. I did this with mine and WOW!! Its a totally different car! My first set of tires were stock sized which helped but my second set were 245/45/19 and it really helped in all areas. My car is fwd and heavier than the Mazda3 but its so much better now. The AWD of the Mazda3 would be greatly improved with just a slight tire change. Not to mention how much better mine is now whth just a CorskSport intake added! You would feel it even more in the lighter Mazda3. Add an axle back exhaust, and some drilled/slotted rotors with better pad and you have a car that is significantly better than the older Mazdaspeed3s but much more comfy/sophisticated! Thanks for this review and I look forward to more!

I have the CX-30 GT Turbo, and I agree with your assessment on the need for adaptive suspension, manual option, steering (is too heavy IMO), stock tires, but another thing it needs is better braking. All of those things would still be welcome on the CX - I'd love a "Hot CUV"
Before making my decision I test drove both the Mazda 3 GT Turbo and the CX-30 and ultimately went with the CX because it had the same amount of cargo space that my previous 2011 Mazda3 Sport GS had, and a more comfortable/practical ride height for where I live. I honestly didn't feel like the CX-30 was much slower. The hatch space in the new Mazda3 is ridiculously tiny. I guess they had to sacrifice some of this space for the AWD system, and the change to the rear suspension from independent to torsion-beam.
Oh, and both have a significantly smaller fuel tank than previous years Mazda3''s. Previously I had a 60L capacity, and now it's only 48L, which is a bummer as far as range goes, especially with the addition of the Turbo.

The old Mazdaspeed has always been a juvenile car. Mazda has clearly stated in the past that they aim for the premium segment which also means making cars for grown ups.

My little sister bought one, had it for a year. HATES THAT CAR WITH EVERY FIBRE OF HER BEING!
she's a former miata owner (NA & ND). Loved both.
Also owned a Mazda 3 with the weird 2.3 and 6speed. not so much love but still enjoyed it.
She thought the new Mazda 3 turbo with awd was going to be a GOLF GTI/GOLF R/WRX Type. A call back to the Mazdaspeed 3, which we test-drove when we were younger drivers.
She hates this car and will be selling it after this year.
To my understanding, this may be the last Mazda she owns. It was that bad.
