  • I have yet to meet someone who doesn't like ladybirds. Even if you aren't fond of spiders and beetles, we seem to love these gorgeous bugs with their shiny shells and domino dots. I need to paint a couple to complete a mammoth beetle paintings, so join me in this simple tutorial. I will show you how to use a yellow underpainting to stop your reds looking washed out and pink. How to work wet in wet watercolour to get jewel like colours, how to lift out highlights from wet or dry paint, how to layer to get depth of colour and how to add enough detail to make a convincing ladybird. All this from one little insect. I will also show how to build up a composition and clean it up, in case you want to paint your own natural history museum.

And why am I painting so many beetles? Well apart from the fact they are beautiful, it's for the monthly challenge taking place over on FaceBook. If you would like to join this friendly group of artists from around the world, do come over to: groups/watercolourstudiowithlizchaderton.
If you have enjoyed this, please consider subscribing and do give it a like, as it means it will be shown to more people. I do a weekly film about a tip or technique, released on Sunday at 2pm (GMT).

What an interesting way to practice so many techniques. I did the green beetle last week and am now ready to try a sheet of multiple bugs. Thanks

I loved the video of your sample beetle and this painting of all the beetles together is remarkable. I appreciate your channel, a very recent discovery. I have been learning a lot and expect to continue to do so. You do such interesting things, the gold leafing, the painting on canvas, those wonderful handmade sketchbooks.
By the way, if you want really nice metallic watercolours, you might want to try the ones by Kuretake. I use them and I love them.
I am a beginner and your style is very different than anything I would do, except maybe the bugs, but there is always something interesting in any video you do

the joy of watercolour is that you can use it for detail and realism through to abstract and splashy

Pretty bugs! My Gran used a number 12 Kolinsky brush for most of her paintings! She made the most amazing twigs on trees ! I was never able to afford those brushes, she did teach me how to use a rigger brush for tiny details and so I recommend one of those for people who want to avoid the use of a pen and ink on/in your watercolor paintings. I really enjoyed watching you plan out your highlights as that is how I was taught, plan your painting and you will avoid having to use “tricks” to finish!
I know that most people are not interested in creating art other than for enjoyment, but if you are truly serious about your medium you learn about how to create your paintings with your medium of choice. I still enjoyed seeing your bugs no matter how you got them on the sheet!

That’s thought provoking!. I think artists fall into many camps. There are those who are purists, and those who aren’t. I am definitely not a purist. For me, it’s more important to create the art you envision and I love to see what watercolour can do. I don’t feel it has to be traditional. So I will mix it with collage, texture etc. You are right, I could have used a brush for detail, but I get more enjoyment from a pen. I don’t feel it’s a trick, rather it brings the effect I am after. So that’s a long way of saying, isn’t it wonderful that watercolour can accommodate us all?
