I will watch again & make some notes. Just a quick question...do you ever look at a painting the following day, & decide to change it/see something you hadn't noticed before? I'll be there for the hundred thousand! I absolutely love your otter! Your style and color choice is so fresh and fun. It really brings an excitement to watercolor. The big banana's bottom is fabulous! Those crystals are so cool! I was so happy that you used them because I was oooing and awwwing over them, when you showed them at the art festival. I'm a tad obsessed with texture so all that you added was just right to make this little fellow pop off the paper. I know this piece will sell right away and make a difference for the otters!😊🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Hullo Liz, I think this is a Grand idea for a celebration for your channel! I have always struggled with the use of "non standard" colors with animals, the blue in this otter is truly amazing! I found your use of masking fluid so well done and going back in after removing it was daring as well! I do hope to see a small or a large flood of otter paintings with the teal blue featured as you made it just seem natural! Well Done! I may have used crystals in the past but never found a real use for them and I have not even had any in my "kit" for some years. I will need to find another way to add some texture instead of crystals. Maybe salt? or use a paint with good granulation. Thank you for posting this lovely painting and Please do not worry about the lack of focus at the beginning of the background footage. I followed along rather well and was NOT put off from trying this painting exercise, thank you!
thanks for the reassurance about the focus. I could have cried!! Salt, a little spatter or even using watercolour pencils and sandpaper into the wet area might make interesting texture

Love this and as I bought some of the crystalline watercolours at Patchings this will be the perfect project to try them out. The mark making around the head especially will also help when I redo my line and wash kingfisher.

Funniky enough I’ve done a full review for next week, but spoiler - they work the same but are pigment based so do not fade in uv. Brusho is dye based and fugitive….
Thanks for this, Liz, really enjoyed it. I found the water-colour crystals, bought specially really hard to use, and didn’t do well with them, ending up with mud. Have used them since and still not got water ever skill is needed for them. Otherwise, throughly enjoyed it.

The thing I really struggle with is how you choose the abstract colours you use. I can't seem to visualise things other than the colours they are in reality. I love the effect but don't know where to begin. ( I also admire Ian Fennelly and the colours he picks at times stress me out). I love your otter but would never think of doing him in these colours . But it works beautifully. Tips please.Congratulations and here's to the next 50k.
I love Ian’s work too! There are a few things to think about. What colours bring the emotion you feel? if nothing else look at the colours you are wearing today and start there! Do the colours work together or mix in unpleasant ways? when usung concentrate on tone not hue. A dark blue can be substituted for a dark brown, but a dark yellow can’t be, as the tone of the yellow won’t be dark enough. Try painting monochromes….
Hi Liz ... love your work. I wanted to ask, how does one protect and finish when doing watercolour on canvas to protect the watercolour from elements and for when having to clean surface at sometime in future? Obviously when with glass its easy, but i cant think of how if watercolour on canvas ...
