  • Beetles are like living gemstones - such a variety of shapes and colours, but how can you capture their iridescence and beauty? In this simple tutorial, I will show you how to use wet in wet watercolour to get jewel like colours, how to lift out highlights from wet or dry paint, how to layer to get depth of colour and how to add enough detail to make a convincing bug. All this from one little insect. We'll also add shadows to see if that is a look we like.
    This beetle was my practice piece before starting a larger painting which featured 38 beetles. You might also like to paint ladybirds and this link will take you to a quick lesson (available 28 August 2022): • How to paint a waterco...
    And why am I painting so many beetles? Well apart from the fact they are beautiful, it's for the monthly challenge taking place over on FaceBook. If you would like to join this friendly group of artists from around the world, do come over to: groups/watercolourstudiowithlizchaderton.
    If you have enjoyed this, please consider subscribing and do give it a like, as it means it will be shown to more people. I do a weekly film about a tip or technique, released on Sunday at 2pm (GMT).

      You are so welcome! I always worry the planning is boring, but a little planning saves a lot of heart ache!

    Best to consult your bug book for anatomical info.

    • @LizChadertonArt
      @LizChadertonArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know! But does it really matter if I call it the right name or not, as long as I paint it to be anatomically plausible? I hope it didn’t spoil your enjoyment

      @@LizChadertonArt I don’t mean to argue. It never hurts to use a correct term or name. We owe it to each other.

      @@sandradonofrio413 if I said first we paint the elytra, then the scuttelum, followed by the pronotum and ending at the tarsal claw, I’m not sure it would make for a better lesson or painting. I fear we must agree to differ.

      You got me there. I meant using more commonly used but accurate terms. You are usually so correct. 💌

    I absolutely love that large painting, and the lesson: beautiful and very useful! Thanks for the inspiration. Also, a question regarding one of your books: in the line and wash book on page 17 you have a picture of some water brushes; what make are they? I haven't seen those anywhere when looking at water brushes. Thanks.

      I just got them off Amazon, called Reamtop www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B077ZR9BGQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 currently unavailable I’m afraid
