    House prices are high because of a lack of supply, simply not building enough homes to meet demand. Rents are high because house prices are high, the two go together.
    Government policy is making things worse by boosting demand even more, rather than encouraging supply. High net migration is boosting population growth at an unprecedented pace. Help to buy just boosts demand, supporting high prices. A radical change of policy is needed to reverse these trends.

    You build more houses, they'll eventually all be bought by landlords in 30-40 years. New houses only solve the problem until those first people who bought it sell up, then what? You've potentially alleviated the rental market prices by a little bit long term. Also I'm not saying Landlords are the only the factor, there's a few other major ones as well (immigration, salary stagnation, stealth taxes, student loan debt, inflation etc).

  • @andrewh2u
    @andrewh2u 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    We have lots and lots of brownfield land, now that we are a post-industrial nation, so why try and concrete over greenfield land or farmland which could be used for agriculture? The low rental cost 'council houses' which the government released under 'right to buy' legislation decades ago was supposed to have the money reinvested into further affordable rental housing stock - so where is all that new rental housing..... not built.
    The idea of stopping evictions and bringing in rent control is going to do *exactly* what it has done *everywhere* else that this has been done, which is to drive small private landlords - thats right the affordable ones - to pull out of the rental market and sell up to private ownership or large corporate........ and then you have less rental supply and higher demand and it doesnt take a genius to know what happens to prices under the law of low supply and high demand.
    However, our politicians are *not* genius but just vapid vote chasers who care no further than the next election cycle.... so watch this space as everything gets worse!

Word on the street is they are planning on housing migrants, lots of them have been filled with furniture, gardens done up, new appliances in the kitchen. These are affordable rentals for families, 3 bedroom and gardens. Children’s parks near by, churches, and bus access to local towns. More to the point would have been a single person or couple without any children or other evidence of bad personal financial planning and saying what their situation is (ie people who help themselves by planning to the best of their ability). Though we also have more and more people piling into our overcrowded country and many of them are coming regardless of whether we want them or no (ie the illegal immigrants) and they then expect housing too.

Its the same news all over the world rents gone through the roof and loads of people are homeless, so powerful people around the world that have resently become billionaires could be the very people we're renting off, the real estate business boomed right before all these people suddenly became rich but of course they said they got rich on the internet but where did the money really come from??? Take home after taxes is about £3500/mo and all four are getting free healthcare.
    Within a year or two of living rent free they should have saved enough to buy and the mortgage would be about £500/mo.
