- On this episode of Roadkill, HOT ROD's David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan join Fred Williams and Rick Péwé of Peterson's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine to compete in the infamous Cheap Truck Challenge. Riding into battle with a modded 1979 Bronco, they face-off against a rock-ready 1980 Toyota Pickup and a beastly 1987 Chevy Suburban in a cash-strapped quest for ultimate off-road glory.

They apparently made a failed attempt to put stuff on Netflix, and they required the older episodes to be removed. That’s what I heard.

***** It really shows that the personalities, not the technical knowledge, type of cars, size of the engines or how much money is spent that makes all the difference. I've watched certain Roadkill episodes multiple times over watching other similar shows (that I won't mention) here on YT. Because the hosts and the people they have on, just do not have personality or chemistry that these two do.

This was the first Roadkill episode I ever saw and it's still my favorite today. Love Roadkill!

I’m watching in 2023. It’s wild how much you could buy/build for your dollar back then. With a $3,500 budget these days, you’d be lucky to get into a road worthy 20+ year old 2wd truck that’s had 11 different owners.

Jager yes I'm 17 my first car was a 5.0 foxbody for only 2500 and I had a bad wreck and I'm looking to buy another just a lot nicer between 4-5k which is still cheap

the best all around truck is easily the toyota but i'd still take the bronco over it as a weekend truck because that thing is FUCKING AWESOME

TheChronicRhythm yes they do. where i am in new england i'll see a 2000 tacoma (good condition, 200k miles no rust) go for 6 or 7 grand. it's crazy.

r u mad yet Oddly enough, a lot of those 80's Broncos go for about the same price range. Depending on condition. A good condition early 90's bronco can make the $8k-10k range. I always thought they were too boxy, but I guess they are really good off road vehicles.

After 3 years this is still one of my all time favorite episodes.
The engine sound of the bronco stole the show! A little while ago I saw an exact same bronco (better shape though) and it was a monster!

Dodge wants to push "Mopar muscle, baby!!!!!!". It's irrelevant at this point. They got picked up by a network. The show will change from being a platform for Dodge to being a platform for sponsors.

ok....so they took all these old Roadkills off youtube a few years ago. NOW THEY ARE BACK!!!! Not all of them but alot of them, I dont see the Raunchero episodes and prob a few others not on the list. Awesome, thank you so much motor trend.

I noticed today, first of August 2019, that they privated almost all the Roadkill episodes on youtube, leaving us with a handful and of course the previews.

I just found this road kill series and I have been watching episodes for the last 12 hours, this is the funnest show I've ever seen!

Loved the burb. even more so because it's got a 4-spd.
Bronco might have won, but the suburban is a goddamn land boat compared to the yota and the ford. I give it credit for keeping on the fords ass for being behind by just a couple seconds.
The burb gave it quite a run for it's money a Blazer would have really been a shootout
***** Even a 400sbc the old 350s weren't monsters by any standards, but they were bullet proof and reliable. Doesn't say what motor is in it, but assuming probably a 350 cause otherwise it'd have a 454 tag in the grill. I have a 5.7L out of a 2003 GMC 3/4ton in my 77 with a 4 speed manual and fulltime 4x4, WAY more power than the old 350 I pulled from it, and the whole truck itself only had 20k original miles but I wanted a better motor.

454 vs 351M... big difference. While they probably made the same amount of power, the 454 chevy makes more torque purely thanks to more cubes.

shoulda got a late 80's Jeep comanche with the 4.0 ... throw some headers and exhaust and tires on it and you've got one badass pickup that will literally go anywhere.

I used a dirty Burban as a tow pig pulled car haulers for 2 years never changed the oil and paid 600 bucks for it. Best truck yet

On the same day I watched this video, I got my first truck and it was a 79 bronco
Also, the Toyota had two half gallon milk jugs when everyone else had gallon jugs. It makes a difference!!

+mathias martiney It makes me miss my grandmas army green military surplus 85 suburban. I think it had a lift and bigger tires. Be careful buying the 90's suburbans and most other gm trucks, I've had nothing but electrical problems with mine.

im gonna be dana 44 and ford 9 inch swapping my ranger, so this is rather comforting knowing finnegan jumped that bronco that high without any reinforcement on that 44 and it help up like a champ.

Don't forget which car they brought in as rescue truck, Volvo TGB 11! TH-cam it!! There's also TGB 13, TGB 20, TGB 30 and TGB 40. TGB 11, 13, 20 is Volvo, TGB 30 and 40 is Scania. 👍

Roadkill was one of the reasons why I like to work on older cars, that and Older vehicles are a heck of a lot easier to work on than newer vehicles. The older ones you didn't have to plug a computer into it just to figure out what was wrong with it. The owner used to be able to more maintenance and repairs by themselves. Now a days vehicles don't use Carburetors anymore they use E.F.I to you non-mechanics out there that means Electronic fuel Injection and no longer using distributors/points and condenser anymore they got replaced by electronic ignition/CDI boxes that mount on the firewall. Mind you most of the newer vehicles systems is controlled by the computer.
I originally subscribed to MTOD because I respected their idea of on demand access but still posting the episode to TH-cam later on. But, not anymore. And I'm no longer a subscriber as of three months ago.

+Smooginator I had a 1990 GMC Suburban I miss that fucking truck. Solid front axle, had a lift in the rear to get that sag out. Don't miss that 30+ Gallon tank though. Mine was gas not diesel

Piles of garbage? that Ford, Toyota and GMC are alot better then Land Rovers. My dad has a Land Rover the first month the radiator sprung a leak he got that fixed a few months later the hose that connects to the radiator busts open gets that fixed and finally just last year the thing was dead in the water wouldn't start at all. Their horrible lame excuses of 4x4's
My dad also has a 1971 Ford Falcon XY GS with a 302 Windsor he's had that since he was 17 so since 1988 and the only problem he's had with that is blowing the diff only because him and his mates we're too lazy to chuck on the 9" after fitting the 302 because she previously had a V6 when he got her. And the way he use to thrash that thing around with burnouts, drag racing, constant revving and speeding, the Falcon still runs perfect today.

I have a 97 Land rover discovery with 221,XXX and still road tripping, it's a pretty simple machine and it hasnt been unreliable for me. I feel it would match up pretty well against these other cheap trucks
In my high school auto shop we have a mid 90s Land Rover discovery with 30k miles but it got in a forward collision. I had helped my teacher replace the gasket for the transmission pan and it took us like 4 times before it stopped leaking. And it’s got a leaking transfer case and a leaking oil pan. I always go to my next class smelling like a leaking Land Rover Lol
Just fyi land rover does not make the plastic radiators or chinese hoses so that doesn't say anything as bout the dependability of a land rover

My first car is an 03 Suburban so you know what I'm picking because it is just the most fun thing to take into places it shouldn't be. It's completely stock yet still one hell of time when you're out with your buddies.

I come back and watch this vid from time to time. I own 2 Bronco's, an 88 and a 93. Always good to see one getting the snot run out of it. Theirs may have won but not by a landslide. Of all those vehicles, I know the Bronco was the most fun to drive tho!

I love roadkill. It's my favorite thing to watch. Freiburger and Finnegan are hilarious. But removing almost every single episode of roadkill from TH-cam is just ridiculous. It's unfair. I can't afford motortrend on demand. Ill always love roadkill. It's just really annoying that I can't watch my favorite show anymore. I still have Finnegans Garage. Witch is also awesome. Please bring back the episode that where shot for TH-cam.

I actually own a 1988 bronco and those things are just monsters no matter what year.. I off road every other weekend and it has never gotten stuck... best 4x4 out there by far
