Multiple Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard gives an overview with live performance footage of his latest release Breathless on Blue Note Records. With his new quintet, The E-Collective, Blanchard journeys into an exciting zone of grooved fusion teeming with funk, R&B and blues colors. The album is a statement piece with the title referencing “I can’t breathe,” the words of Eric Garner that have since echoed across the country in protest of discrimination. The E-Collective includes Charles Altura (Guitar), Fabian Almazan (Piano and Synths), Donald Ramsey (Bass), and Oscar Seaton (Drums).
The adventurous 13-tune recording zeroes in on several Blanchard originals, an epic-length piece by Fabian Almazan (“Everglades”) and a scattering of covers, sung by soothing and soulful vocalist PJ Morton (a member of the band Maroon 5), including an exhilarating take on the modern standard “Compared to What“ made famous by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, and the soul-vibed and lyrical take on “I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But Time” penned by Hank Williams.

Great band, saw them live in Seattle. Charles Altura is everywhere and rightly so. A really humble, great guy and just a master of inflection, tone. If he becomes a star (I hope) it will never go to his head. Great music!

What you look like in any way should not be judged by anyone.......if he want's to wear nail polish like Nuno or any other guitar player on earth, why would you ask him "why the nail polish"????? 4 years ago to boot and then another cut down "I'm sure it doesn't make you play any better" You are nobody to judge or make some sort of fun with these musicians. By the way I know the bass player and just played with him on July 4th in Gulfport Misssissippi.................

Did Terence say "the way Monk loved Coltrane"? He probably did -- but he certainly didn't "imitate" or "emulate" him. Monk came first, and if anyone was influenced, it would have been the other way around.,
I notice the Ottawa Jazz Festival (and Ottawa in general) is allergic to stand-up bass, which is the quintessential jazz instrument (and has a more complex and enjoyable sound than an electric bass).
Plaese don't call musicians an "act". It's not Las Vegas.
